Honestly this is one of the most perfect versions of this piece I've ever heard and you can tell this guy knows what he's doing because he has perfect fingering and perfect tempo and didn't mess up whereas other pianist try to beat the hell out of the piano just to look good, but you can never understand Franz Liszt's ability and skill until you actually hear one of his pieces played correctly like it is here! Bravo!!!

I have to disagree. I started studying this piece on the piano when I was 15 and managed to learn it, however horribly, I had this bad boy memorized. I am always in awe of pianists who can actually play the dang thing WELL, but this guys was not one of my favorites. I heard a few clunkers (which is by far better than I could do though!) and wasn't quite feeling the character of his interpretation. To each his own, I guess.

His version of this piece is very light, sweet, and gentle, more like a Chopin piece. Although his fortes are spot on.A brilliant performer, as is Valentina Lisitsa, but her version seems much more aggressive and cold. I think I prefer Maksim's. It would be wonderful to have heard Liszt play it himself, for his original interpretation.

maksim's interpretation is far from technical perfection and that is why i like it. the variation carries the passion i like in this piece. i think it has its' own brilliance. it has wabi sabi. i have listened to this so many times and i lose myself in it every time.

Hello, just a quick thought... I'm sorry to break it to you but Franz Liszt was not a Magyar... Please you people do some thorough research... Yes, Franz Liszt was Ungarian citizen but Slovak(Slovien) national... His maternal languge was NOT magyar, he didn't even speak magyar language his whole life... ❤

@@jaroslavnovotny556 German: [ˈlɪst]; Hungarian: Liszt Ferencz, in modern usage Liszt Ferenc [ˈlist ˈfɛrɛnt͡s]. Liszt's Hungarian passport spelled his given name as "Ferencz". An orthographic reform of the Hungarian language in 1922 (which was 36 years after Liszt's death) changed the letter "cz" to simply "c" in all words except surnames; this has led to Liszt's given name being rendered in modern Hungarian usage as "Ferenc". From 1859 to 1867 he was officially Franz Ritter von Liszt; he was created a Ritter (knight) by Emperor Francis Joseph I in 1859, but never used this title of nobility in public. The title was necessary to marry the Princess Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein without her losing her privileges, but after the marriage fell through, Liszt transferred the title to his uncle Eduard in 1867. Eduard's son was Franz von Liszt. ^ His birthplace is now a museum. Throughout his life, he claimed to be Magyar, rather than German and referred to Hungary as his homeland. When later in his life he gave charity concerts in Hungary, he sometimes appeared wearing national dress (Walker 1987, p. 48).

Without a doubt the best. It’s performed exactly the way it should be, not too ‘impressive ‘ in a way that puts focus on the fact that it’s performed live and they’re trying to impress the audience, but exactly how it should be in an artistic manner. In a theatrical manner, dramatic way, an almost cartoon like performance . Exactly how you would imagine it in your fantasy but not in reality.

Beautiful interpretation of what is arguably the most difficult piece ever written for piano. He not only knows how to play the song, but also understands its essence, and he interprets it both appropriately and beautifully. The mellow moments are quiet, tender, and unhurried, while the big moments are bold, dynamic, and unstoppable. I know he's borderline theatrical, but I think that his dramatic stage presence ties in successfully to his actual performance, probably because he has such a keen understanding of the music he's playing. This is probably my favorite, live rendition of this piece. Simply superb.

+itsmegp46 Steinway and Fazioli are two manufacturers that make the highest quality and most expensive pianos, also Bosendorfer would be up there. Which is better is all down to the pianist's sound preference, but Steinway make up about 80% of the high-end market in terms of sheer popularity and I'm not sure but it may also be in part due to the fact that Fazioli has only a single factory that makes only around 100 pianos a year. Anyway, if you see a classical concert pianist they will most likely play on a Steinway, Fazioli or Bosendorfer because they are all the 'best' though slightly different. :)

Agreed..although maybe a bit unpolished, it's extremely passionate. One of the best renditions I've heard..especially the first half!

When I die, I hope it sounds like 0:21-0:36 On a side note, pianists like this bring back the hearing in Ludwig 😅... and you can tell he's taking his time with his touches, he's making the same faces when I try to make the perfect pancake for my daughter on Sunday morning. Underrated performance, can't save enough.

@BiancaFugaru2403 I absolutely love Valentina, I've already got my ticket to see her in the Albert Hall in June. But playing piano is not a competition (her words) so it's not that Valentina's version is better, you just prefer it to this. Fair enough, I actually prefer Hamelin's interpretation to anyone elses but I have huge respect to anyone who plays this piece...even Jung Lin.

I highly agree with you. I have been searching for an interpretation for 2 or 3 years, and finally I got this one. I still remember that the first time I heard his interpretation, I knew that this is the one I'm looking for. His interpretation is aweson and unique, different from all the others. It's my favorite.

I have listened to so many of the greats play this piece...and I don't know what it is...his expressions while playing when the music/rhythm is being channeled through him... But the rhythm, the accents, and the tempo are all my absolute favorites in this performance. I love it!

feels every single note as if it were spaking to him and telling him how it wants to be played, never seen a better interpretation. the same when he plays chopin's nocturne in Db, simply amazing. thank you for existing =)
