Makita M9400 Belt Sander Review - Episode 212

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

An unboxing and initial review of the Makita M9400 Belt Sander.
This has a 100mm 4" belt and is a beast of a machine weighing in at 6.2KG, so no light weight. It may not be light but it is really simple, very quick to change the belts and does a very quick job.
It even comes with a bracket to turn it up side down and turn it into a bench sander.

    Thanks the great review. I wanted a 4in belt and here in Australia the pickings are slim. I tried the Makita 9403 1200w machine and it was a Beast... and cost AU$500. Then my HW guy said check out the Makita MT9400.... exactly the same form factor but 580watts and AU$175. I got the MT and have loved it... it is heavy and the weight works to its favour in sanding everything including Aussie Redgum which is tough as nails. Great little sander and underrated by the local tradies who always get the Blue Makita’s.

    Thank you. All Makita tools seems to be great and there are lots of parts available online for all models. Tradies will stick to the blue as they are the professional range. Certainly if I had the money then I would buy the blue but for lighter use this hobby range is excellent equipment.

    Nice bit of kit , I like the bracket so to make it a bench sander and nice quick belt change . Downside is it could do with a longer lead . Good review Paul, Cheers, Bram

    Thank you Bram. Yes lead length does seem short, but if sanding the floor would be OK as you can only work on a certain area at a time and moving an extension lead should be no hassle. Belt change is a dream and that bracket, I've used a lot to turn it into a bench sander for sanding down long boards of pallet wood.

    Thanks for the video Paul, I've just bought one of these for sanding my decking prior to re treatment and wasn't sure what the metal bracket was for. The instructions don't tell you at all, but now I know thanks to you. I've not used the sander yet but hopefully it'll be as impressive as you found yours to be. Cheers again.

    If you use this in the normal orientation which you will for the decking, just be careful as to how much you sand back. Always think you’re taking too much off as it will eat through the wood. Best to go over several times rather than take too much off.

    Just ordered one from Screwfix, looks very good, my last Bosch belt sander lasted a fair while, so this being a Makita, i would expect the same, if not longer...Very good review, no stupid music, or high five bs lol...How you got a dislike is beyond me...but we all know what this place is like lol

    Thank you John. The bracket is ideal and you can clamp or screw the bracket to something. However I've found that they weight of the machine loose on a surface it hardly moves, so is actually a great feature, being able to use it just about anywhere.

    Hi paul It looks a good heavy duty machine But in my experience any belt sander will give you a good finish depending on what grade of paper you are using I got my sander from aldi about twenty years ago and it's still going strong P's love your video's John

  • @PaulLockwood

    @PaulLockwood

    Thank you John. Yes very true any belt sander should give a good finish as they are all there to do a simple job. I opted for this one due to the size and the added option of turning it upside down as a bench sander which is where it has been getting most of its use. This makes it's more versatile and actually better than a bench sander to work on large work. After using it this way I'm already planning up a follow up review on this as well as other reviews as I think it's extra important information that wasn't covered. The Aldi palm router I bought for £25 has more than paid for itself, does have some minor draw backs but works very well. So yes agree with budget tools.

    currebtly in screwfix at 120. (on an offer). ive just bougth this. the bracket was a selling point for me as im currently building a long workbench which a router is going to fitted for making picture frame rebates, so this belt sander will be an additonal tool for the bench top. the makita bluey green one is double the price if not more. the difference with orange MT and the common greeny blue? many ask this. bascially its this..... one is built in japan. one is built in china

    A lot of premium companies often make a more budget range. Usually under a different name, bit I think with Makita still putting their name to the cheaper range show confidence in the product. It's a beast and very powerful, don't use mine much but it can soon take a lot of material away.

    Hi Paul, I'm quite surprised that the tool does not have a variable speed control. I've got a Titan 3" belt sander and that has a speed control which is needed because these beasts have a lot of torque. Screwfix no longer sell this tool, although you could get one from Tradepost. The Makita is certainly for big jobs and I think you are right in saying it would be ideal for floorboards. Manufacturers skimping on power lead lengths is something that really bugs me, 1.8m is not long enough. Still yet to own a Maikta Power Tool, although I do have an overpriced Makita petrol lawnmower with Briggs and Stratton engine which is probably the best thing about it! Thanks for sharing your review. Cheers

  • @PaulLockwood

    @PaulLockwood

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thank you. Variable speed would certainly be something to thing about. I think though that this doesn't run very fast so I don't think it would make much difference. Turn it upside down as a bench sander and it works great, ideal speed. My existing bench planer is also similar speed but the front spinning disc is often too fast. Belts seem to run at a nice speed. 1.8M isn't much for something like this, but then if you're sanding a floor you would only be able to do a certain area at a time and therefore moving an extension lead should be no issue. I now have 3 pieces of Makita kit still to do a review on the Multi-Tool and that's actually the blue range not these cheaper DIY Orange range.

    If the speed/power is too much it helps to use a higher grit belt. BTW the lack of speed control and especially the short power cord is a deliberate action to make the tool not too attractive. Otherwise it would cannibalise the sales of the much more expensive blue models. If they make the Red line too nice nobody would buy the blue anymore. I even expect them to stop sales of these models in rich countries.

    Hey Paul great review. Are you still happy with it? Pete

  • @PaulLockwood

    @PaulLockwood

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thank you Pete. Yes very happy. I use it as a bench sander more than anything as the bracket that sits on the handle allows you to turn this upside down. Changing belts is done in about 10 seconds meaning you can go through a range of grits very quickly. Also as there are no guards you can put any size and shape of timber over it. If you hand hold this as a normal sander it's going to be aggressive due to the weight and you will find that you can soon take out a lot of material if left in one place. So I use my Makita orbital sander (also did a review on that) on where I need to hand hold a sander.

  • @bobdebouwer7835
    @bobdebouwer7835 Жыл бұрын

    I chose this because I don't trust cheap brands anymore for the true wattage of the motors and for the low quality. Also with cheap tools there can be downsides which you only find out while using. This Makita is a beast. Heavy and almost too strong. A higher grit makes it easier to control. It works fast and gives a durable impression. For finishing I use a dewalt orbital. It was the least vibrations so better for the wrist. PS DON'T WEAR GLOVES

  • @PaulLockwood

    @PaulLockwood

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you Bob. Some cheap tools work fine, it really depends on how much you use them. I bought the Aldi Palm Router for about £30, minimal use but it does what I need it for to save getting out the larger router. Agreed, this is certainly a beast.

    As a professional woodworker I dispute the comment saying it’s the grade of the abrasive belts that matters. Not so IMO, most importantly the electric motor needs to be man enough for the job at hand.

  • @PaulLockwood

    @PaulLockwood

    2 жыл бұрын

    The only mention on the grade of belt I mention is about getting a better finish. You're not going to get a super smooth finish using just 80 grit paper. The difference between 80 and 400 grit will be massive. Yes the motor needs to be man enough for the machine, but if it wasn't then it would have been a negative review on the whole machine and the user reviews on screwfix would have reflected this.
