Making your own masterblend proxy from scratch (DIY)

In this video, we show you how to prepare a concentrated solution that reproduces the mineral composition you would get if you dissolved 20g of masterblend 5-11-26 and took it to a final volume of 250mL using distilled water, assuming the label of the masterblend exactly describes its mineral composition. This solution can be used as the 5-11-26 mixes provided by masterblend, JR peters, Jacks, etc.
Note that this is not guaranteed to reproduce the exact composition of any of the commercial 5-11-26 mixes, in that we don't know the exact chelates, additives or other substances used in their making.
Solutions of this type are commonly used with Calcium Nitrate, Magnesium Sulfate and/or Monopotassium phosphate, depending on the plants being fed. Note that Calcium Nitrate should always be used, as this solution provides no Calcium and only a small amount of nitrogen as nitrate.
When used at 10mL/L (37.85mL/gal) it provides the following final composition (in ppm):
N (NO3-) 43.372
K 171.452
P 39.926
Mg 24.88
S 34.559
Fe 2.4
Mn 0.4
Zn 0.12
B 0.4
Cu 0.12
Mo 0.08
The solution (250mL final volume) is prepared using the following chemicals (in grams):
Copper Sulfate (pentahydrate) 0.012
Iron sulfate (anhydrous) 0.163
Magnesium Sulfate (Heptahydrate) 6.308
Potassium Monobasic Phosphate 4.386
Potassium Nitrate 7.826
Zinc Sulfate (Monohydrate) 0.008
Manganese sulfate 0.028
Sodium Molybdate (Dihydrate) 0.005
Boric Acid 0.057
Disodium EDTA 1.8
Sodium Benzoate 0.05
Green Food dye 1 drop
Please bear in mind that the exact salts above should be used. Adjustments need to be made when the degree of hydration of the salts does not match the example. For example, if you do not find anhydrous iron sulfate but, iron sulfate heptahydrate, you will need to adjust the amount accordingly.     All my love from Thailand 🇨🇷 ❤! I believe in both the importance of knowing where everthing comes from and how it's made. So it's no failure if this lab experience is more expensive. But bluntly, is it cheaper to make for personal use than buying it? It's just for my red lettuce, I don't need tight tolerances or a long shelf life. Just lettuce without e.Coli 😂. -Retired Science Teacher with tons of time.

    Thank you so much for you videos and Hydrobuddy ! Using it I've basically been able to use one commercial mix to reproduce another's. ( Will try to get pure base salts in the future when my commercial mixes are up ) It's not exactly the same since the labels could be wrong but the application allows it and the plants seem way happier.

In this grow I did many mistakes with additives, like Vitamin C, Glucose, shugar etc. Please, talk about good additives for hydroponic in future videos.

    Thanks for this video and all your blog posts! I wondering however how you can mix the micros with the phosphates? After reading your blog, I thought that iron and phosphates shouldn't be mixed together.

    Thanks for commenting! These substances are not nutrients, so they are therefore not included in HydroBuddy. You can look at these and other video son preparing stock soltuions to get an idea about how much you should add of these substances to stock solutions if you want to use them.

    Nice video Dr. Fernandez, I have a question... What if I want to convert the micronutrients solution to x1000 from x100. Do I multiply the weights of the micronutrients chemicals by 10 again including the disodium edta?

You can do that if you wish, however, note that this solution relies on the acid coming from the MKP to adjust the solution to the proper pH, so a 1:1000 solution that does not have any MKP would require the addition of phosphoric or sulfuric acid to get the pH to proper values (4-5). Add the acid after adding 10x the disodium EDTA.

    Hi Dr. Fernandez, as i understand masterblend formula does not care about whether the water is hard or soft as i think it's designed as general purpose nutrient formulation. In your diy formulation what's the typical general npk ratio to offset hardwater or soft. Generally hobbyists i think will not dwell on having their tap water get tested on its mineral content.     Thanks for writing! To adjust for hard water is generally not a matter of necessarily adjusting your NPK but adjusting the amount of Ca/Mg/Fe/Zn in the formulation to account for the contributions made by the water. Hard water will also require the addition of acid, depending on which acid you use, you might need to lower your N or P to account for either phosphoric or nitric acid additions. Using sulfuric acid avoids doing such adjustments but you still need to lower the contributions of nutrients that the water is providing. Sadly there is not a rule of thumb for hard water, the degree of alkalinity and chemical analysis need to be used to create a tailored formulation for your particular water source.

    I think I figured it out, or it is an awesome coincidence. I added up the weights of your formula, and it came out to 18.793g, and you have 1.8g of Disodium EDTA . So, I am guessing that about 10% is enough to get the job done. If I take that same way of thinking for the preservative (Sodium Benzoate), 0.05 is 0.266% of 18.793. If I am way off, please let me know.

    The amount of EDTA you should add depends on the molar concentration of Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu. Add all those molar amounts and multiply them to 1.2 to obtain the moles of disodium EDTA you should add. (1.2 to have a 20% excess to ensure everything is chelated) The amount of the preservative per liter is constant, it doesn't depend on the total weight of salts.

    This is incorrect. You need to use the moles of the elements you want to chelate to calculate the amount of EDTA.

    Thank you for the video. You mentioned the need for conversion adjustment from Iron sulfate anhydrous to Heptahydrate version which is more widely available. I did find a pub med discussion of dehydration by visual color change until more hydrated versions become white from heating as color is stated as indicative of H2O content. It was a discussion of a chemistry student who did not have the appropriate salt for an experiment and was not a hydroponics application. Is this possible with Hydroponics?, Will dehydration work in a pinch without having to convert mol? Regardless I need a solution lol no pun lol. Looking at hydrobuddy I whould have to enter the molar weight in the weights box of all salts individually or just the iron sulfate Heptahydrate?

    Thanks for posting. To convert an amount of Iron Sulfate to an amount of Iron Sulfate Heptahydrate multiply the quantity by 1.83. For example, if you need to add 1g of anhydrous Iron Sulfate you would instead add 1.83g of the Iron Sulfate Heptahydrate. I hope this helps!

    @@ScienceinHydroponics Thank you so much for that conversion info and all you do. Side note what nutrients to you see as becoming short supply or increase in price with Russia sanctions, I assume it's mostly soil ammonium based nitrates as opposed to the sulfates and potash imports?

    Awesome video! I have a question that has always drove me nuts. Why in hydroponic npk the nitrogen, if it's no3 or nh4 it's counted the same even though the amounts nitrogen are not the same. Also it's counted as it's ALL nitrogen even though it isn't. However, p as in p2o5 and k in k2o are calculated correctly and the O isn't counted. This has bugged me for a very long time. Can you explain this? Thanks in advance btw really liked the how they came up with the tds ppm cool.

    Very informative video!!! Just one question Can we use this solution to feed soil plants after 3-4 week(when solution is no longer suitable for hydroponics)? As my main concern with regards to sodium benzoate that it might damage the soil.

    Thanks for commenting. My concern would be that, if it has spoiled, you would be adding a solution that is rich in fungal spores to your soil, I have no idea if these fungi are pathogenic or not, but it is a risk, for either soil or hydroponic grows.

What if the nutrients solution is not contaminated with any bacteria/fungal disease and the solution is just being replaced after 4 week as par of maintenance then is it safe to use in soil garden (This is to save the water and reuse the remaining nutrients)

    @@sam_8a This depends on your soil composition. If your soil is already rich in some nutrients then this application can cause excess of some. However most of the time it should be safe to apply this twice as diluted as you would use in hydroponics when used in soils.

    Thanks for commenting. I use airtight plastic containers I bought, they are good enough to store calcium nitrate. You can use mason jars to store Ca nitrate or any airtight plastic/glass container. Avoid using any metal containers to store nitrates though. About where to buy the salts, you can buy most of them at custom hydro nutrients (customhydronutrients.com/)

    Great content. Sodium Molybdate is very expensive, however Ammonium molybdate is a tenth of the cost, can a substitution be made.

    Thanks for writing! The video shows you how to prepare the equivalent of a MasterBlend solution dissolved at 20g/250mL, you can use it in the same way you would use such a solution. How exactly, depends on how you would use a Masterblend to start with.

    Masterblend is so expensive now at about 6 USD per pound which is insane. I really want to do some hydroponics but the prices are a bit steep when you add up the three ingredients together PLUS I do peppers, and tomatoes which will drink a lot of it. There has to be something cheaper than 30 dollars for 5 pounds, then 5 pounds of the calcium nitrate is 16, then the Epsom Salt at around 8 for six pounds.

    Thanks for commenting. The truth is that fertilizers right now are really expensive, especially at low quantities. If you want to get good prices, you need to buy at least 50 pound bags of each.

    Si claro, puedes replicar cualquier formulación. Sin embargo es necesario hacer analisis de laboratorio para replicarlas, ya que la composición que ponen en la etiqueta no es realmente lo que hay en el producto.

    You need to add around 1.8x the amount. You can use the ratio between the molar mass of both compounds to find a more precise adjustment.

    No, they will mostly be acidic. This is required for their stability.
