Making Wheel Widening Machine

The machine is very helpful in making the widening of steel wheels, for the drive I used an electric motor with a gear, the engine speed was additionally reduced so that it was possible to weld not only with the mig method but also with the tig method. With such a widening of the wheels, work must be done very carefully, without haste, weld with high current to perform remelting. The wheel that I widened is much harder to widen than the regular wheel, but thanks to the rollers, I managed to make this wheel perfectly, the rollers help to center and align the wheel axis

Wonderful. I had a pair of OEM polished aluminum Ford wheels from my 2012 Mustane widened by a craftsman in Michigan. I don't know how HE did it, but it came out very well. 8" wheels became 10" wheels, yet looked STOCK. Same idea. Props on an easy-to-understand and well-thought-out build.

really like this project. Thanks for sharing. I often thought about buidling something like this as well. One reason was to also straighten bent wheel rims, as well as to produce round parts like pressure tanks. Now to find a good spot in the workshop to store this fixture !

Cutting off the back side of another rim to replace the front, for widening & looks, was popular back then, the welding was not nearly as nice. Being able to cut down to the center piece with the cutoff wheel and being able to center the addition on the center piece is a BIG help.

Back in the 70's, I did work for a company that manufactured RV's in Los Angeles. They modified small import pick-up trucks. They needed wider tires for the back, they did exactly what you saw in the video. I don't recall the machine that cut the rim all that complicated though. It seemed they cut the wheel on a lathe, didn't use a cut-off disk like in the video. They then welded a section of pipe in, I don't recall what kind of welder, believe it was a MIG welder though. Apparently the wheel size they needed was not commercially manufactured, they needed them, they built them. Jim

Way back in the early 1970's I had a set of wheels widened by cutting and inserting a band. This was in Launceston, Tasmania - the shop that did it was very busy as most wheels back then were for tubed tyres and 4.5" rim width, with most cars having huge distance from the body to the rim. The car enthusiasts all wanted 6.5 - 7.0 inch rims and the tyres for that were all tubeless, so the welding job had to be good. Not sure what kind of equipment the shop used, but the results were perfect. It's no longer legal to run wheels widened this way in Australia.

Thanks 👏 I have to point that making wider change all the physics, stress, tensión so as the rims shoulg had to be reinforced as new loads have to be contemplated, and i would not rely my life driving a car to its limits with that wheel, neverthelesd again a fantastic lesson on machinery. 👍

Of course it was not DOT approved for highway use. It was just for a 1500 hp pulling truck. That was some nice looking welds.
