Making the Perfect Yoda Puppet Replica
Ғылым және технология
Creature effects artists Nick Maley worked on Stuart Freeborn's team to create the original Yoda puppets for The Empire Strikes Back. Over 40 years later, Nick has embarked on a journey to recreate that Yoda puppet using molds of surviving parts of the original, and to preserve the work and stories of his fellow effects artists who worked on this iconic character.

Great interview Norm, you didnt say much but you can see his passion for this little green icon.
Thank you Norm & team for this interview/video and letting Mr. Maley speak as freely as you did. Too many times, interviewers rush people along for time constraints and agendas. Grateful. I'll follow the links provided.
How beautiful puppets you have
This was so incredible, thank you so much for interviewing Nick and exposing so much of this aspect of Star Wars that myself and a lot of other people just have never seen, before. To say that 'all the work Adam Savage & co have been putting into this channel is beautiful' would still be a massive understatement. You guys are all helping to inspire creativity and imagination in so many people, and showing off just how it's all done without any ego or desire for making oodles of money. It's so inspiring and heartwarming; I genuinely hope some day I can lend myself to furthering this craft as well, and help tell stories that can take full advantage of this artform as well. 💜
Also, I love watching Norm’s wonder when he sees amazing things like this.
Oh wow, this is great! I’ve been wondering where I can find good reference material for creating my own Yoda puppet. Thanks Tested!
Great to see someone who still has a genuine sense of enjoyment from being part of the production team even after all this time, Without all the endless platitude spouting industry nonsense that most of the better known Production guys have memorized from the same script, And is willingly giving up his knowledge and experience with anyone who is interested with the time he has left to be able to get around and do this kind of thing. Cheers
I got real goosebumps when the ears moved.
Wonderful, you really cant fault this or his ethics for life.
This looks amazing. Thank you Mr. Maley for your contribution to Star Wars. May the force be with you!
Really interesting, his passion is amazing. You become lost in the details to create as close to perfection as possible. It reminds me of following my dream of wanting a metal T-800 skull, so I did not stop learning until I could make one.
I wouldn't have minded the CGI Yoda (from the prequels) quite so much if they'd done a better job of matching it up visually with the original puppets. I know they faced more rendering and texturing challenges 20 years ago vs. now, but the underlying CGI model itself clearly wasn't accurate (eyes were too small in proportion to the rest of the face) and threw everything off.

Great to hear Nick’s backstory shared by Tested. Was a pleasure to help Nick start streaming as Covid lockdowns took hold.
That documentary sounds like a great idea, I look forward to seeing it one day.
That's great that the history of Yoda is being attempted. If completed it will be entirely new footage of the props life.
Our family vacation to St. Martin was made even more fun when we went to his museum, and work shop. He was so friendly to my kids, and was a eager to share .
My family took me on a cruise when I was young and I met Nick Maley. Cool to see him still working to pass on generational knowledge of Star Wars.
You guys should also talk to Nick Dudman, who i think was sort of another apprentice of Freeborn's and also worked on both the first two trilogies in regard to creature effects. Great job, Mr. Maley! Yoda looks absolutely PERFECT! WOW!!!!
Nick talking about how it really should be kept hidden for preservation reminds me Kevin Yagher, who famously did Chucky, said the stuff he kept in cardboard boxes preserved better than any other way.
This is the model they should've uses for in the last Jedi.
I love to see this in my ytube feed. Special effects is my life!!
Holy crap! Nick Maley! Super nice man! 💚
Absolutely amazing
That Yoda is fantastic!
Really cool that he’s putting together a documentary, so much info will be lost otherwise. His little museum is super cool too, he works there himself also. “Ordinary Adventures” here on KZread visited it not too long ago
What a lovely self effacing guy. I had a look at his website and what he says is inspirational. I shall be following his channel.

Mr. Maley’s movie exhibit in Philipsburg, Sint Maarten is amazing to see. Great man.
So jolly! Norm is the perfect guy for this.
What an amazing man to create what was a big part of my childhood, i have several yoda models but I to prefer animatronic yoda hated CGI yoda never felt right to me what a great video so loved watching it
The raffle Norman mentions is to allow us to register our foundation in the USA so we can run a Kickstarter to fund what we do... inspire kids, make documentaries and KZread vids. Link is in the description above.
We need for someone to finish the Dark Crystal Saga with the Garthim War. Netflix, of course, cancelled part 2 of the prequel.
CGI is great for things that just can't be done practically, but there's something that a physical object provides that CGI often lacks.
This Yoda looks more like the original Yoda than the one from the new Disney Trilogy does.
I remember seeing one of the original Yoda Puppets in a back hallway at the SciFi Con in 1980 in LA
Watching Norm Geek out is one of the best parts of this video! I know I would be...
I wish the Yoda puppet they used in Episode 1 and 8 had been as good as this.
Wished i would have seen this before meeting Mr. Maley at Steel City Con recently. Knew he did og yoda was talking to him about making the Beast in Krull.
I'm surprised that Mouse Inc. hasn't tried to shut him down. Man, would there be an outcry from fans! I want that Yosa statue!
grant would of loved that puppet, looks so cool
Great!
So was there a big Yoda for close ups or not? Like Gizmo? I just always think I can spot that in the movie is all, especially when his hands are fully mobile (latex gloves on an actor).
It was wonderful seeing a physical Yoda puppet in Phantom Menace (shame George Lucas erased that and replaced it with CGI Yoda), and the BEST scene in The Last Jedi is force ghost Yoda, because he’s a physical puppet again!

TPM's CG Yoda looked good; far far better than what was in AOTC and ROTS. Those Yodas stunk, big, from the fakeness to how terrible Frank Oz sounded. Listen to Oz in ESB, ROTJ, TPM and even TLJ vs the other prequels and hear how off he sounds.
@joermnyc
Жыл бұрын
@@davidleavitt835 AOTC everyone sounds off, because all the dialogue needed to be redone in post, the new cameras (and their power generators) George Lucas used were loud enough for the on set microphones to pick them up, which ruined all the audio!
@davidleavitt835
Жыл бұрын
@@joermnyc amen. That said Oz was never on set to record dialogue. He did it via video conference. Note he was on set for ESB, ROTJ, TPM and TLJ; huge vocal differences. Even for Jedi Temple Challenge, where he did Yoda's voice.
Awwwwwwwwesome!
Maybe I’m just unaware of common knowledge about Yoda, but I can’t help but see Lee Van Cleef in the face. Very cool project.
I’d really like to see some company make a proper Yoda puppet that we can buy. Maybe make it out of nerf foam. It doesn’t have to be super articulate. Maybe just the eyes and mouth.
Cool
FAN-tastic.

They claimed that they used the original molds to re-create that Yoda, but I have to assume that something was overlooked or skipped in the process because, yeah, something's definitely off. My personal suspicion is that there wasn't enough underlying support in the mouth area of the puppet because it's slightly "sunken in", giving him a toothless quality and making his cheeks look larger by comparison. But, who knows...

Fine art sir but puppet is aged this is funny 🤣🤣 and thank you sir for sharing this video.
I hope they 3D Scanned it for preservation.
I wish movies would rely less on CGI and use more animatronics again.
I have his autograph and a photo with him and the OG puppet that my parents got me in St. John I believe. Now I wish I would have met him myself, what a classy guy! He has a shop on the island that he keeps open for tourists and fans of the films. I really want this documentary to succeed! His new puppet is uncanny - what a beautiful representation of the REAL pale green Yoda, which far exceeds anything Lucasfilm did with him since ROTJ, even Lucas himself. Remember how hideous that troll of a puppet was in TPM?! Like HOW did they not consult the original team and this guy especially for that? It's unreal to me how wrong they get Yoda even in action figure form, always making him too green and giving him a stupid anime cane. THIS is the OG Yoda - the only one there should ever be. All designs should stem from this, not the other way around - the CGI Yoda is an imposter!
Somehow lucasfilm has been unable to do this for the past 24+ years
Now make the perfect baby yoda

Last time I checked there was a few people on there selling really good replicas of this version. Just for display 0 movement. Also don't expect to pay mass produced big company prices either these are handmade by fans. The one I seen was around 1000 dollars or more. If your crafty I'm sure you could find casts of the head hands and feet and you could paint and create your own. There's so much information out there on fabric type/color for robe, exact paint color and tips for yodas skin, etc. I know there's entire forums dedicated to r2d2 building with fans who also machine and sell metal domes and body for your r2 and a step by step walk-through on how to build one. They cost a fortune though when you want machined metal parts and all the lighting/animatronics, speakers, etc, etc. I might build one one day with machined parts but without the ability to drive around. Just animatronics In the dome so it can turn.
The Yoda is AWESOME!! And this was SO interesting. The ear and eye controls are amazing. Just curious. I always wonder when I see someone wearing a mask where it is not required, the reason. Do you have compromised immune system?

If only there was a yoda replica made that looks this beautiful. Most yoda replicas are ugly and dont match the character at all.
they used the original molds for "the last jedi", and what a bloated mess that was. this one looks fantastic!
So how come these guys could do it.... yet Rian "Ruin" Johnson f*cked it up completely ... and made Yoda look like a baby with fat cheeks?!
