Jamie has just the right amount of competence, incompetence and nervous breakdown to be completely relatable. As much as the recipes are a test for Jamie, Jamie is a test for the recipies: he just follows them. To the letter. If it fails, who's to blame? I'd say the recipe maker.

Ya, I think the icing was just too soft for this type of cake. The cakes were too heavy, but that’s not Jamie’s fault. More the recipe maker’s
Hi Jamie! Some friendly old lady advice from way back when they had girls take a class called Home Ec. Before you decorate your cake, place two pieces of either wax paper or parchment paper...one piece on each side and dividing the platter in half. When you finish decorating or frosting, you slide each piece out from under the cake and voila! Your platter is clean 😁
@murasakirin8998
Ай бұрын
Yup. When i learned that trick it made decorating so much easier and more fun since there were fewer dishes to wash. I also learned that less is more when putting frosting between layers, and that making a border with frosting is the way to go with jamy fillings. So many of the tips and tricks you learned when you were younger are still widely used today, and bring more joy to the baking and decorating world.

the lore!!!! 🥹
Jamie, for the love of all that is holy, please, please, please invest in some cardboard cake boards. They cost like $6 and will save you so much grief. While you are at it, go to the hardware store and buy some wooden dowels and a pair of garden shears. Put the cake on the cardboard board, and once stacked, insert dowels, snip off excess dowel with the garden shears. This is what pro bakers do (although some use giant plastic straw looking things instead of the wooden dowels). It will make your life much easier and baking will be far less stressful for you. Want to transfer the cake? Put your spatula under the cardboard and move it easily.
@apopheny
Ай бұрын
While he's buying things, a basic cake leveller/cutter costs a pittance and would save him so much grief. Roughly the same height is not the same as level.

@apopheny Ikr. He invests in a bunch of specialty pans and ingredients. But a turntable, cake scraper and leveler are too much lol.
@chantalhamilton2374
Ай бұрын
@baconegger1450 To be fair, cardboard rounds aren't necessary for home baking. Most recipes just tell you to stack/decorate on the serving plate or cake stand. Jamie's problem is he then insists on moving it to another plate when you can just wipe around the plate. Also, dowels are generally only needed for tiered or extra tall cakes which I've never seen Jamie do
@reginabillotti
Ай бұрын
@@chantalhamilton2374 The trick I was taught is to put strips of wax paper underneath the cake as you decorate and then pull them out after you've finished. That way the serving dish is clean.

"The content of this Silver Fox bowl may contain the most unhealthy thing I've ever made." Hon, I got diabetes by the time the marshmallows appeared. But what a glorious execution. Also, it's always nice to see you taking a deeper dive into the scientific side of baking. Pro tip: when dividing dough/batter among several dishes, scale/weigh it. Best way to ensure equally sized cakes which bake at the same time

That and the Ten Second Tidy this episode. Big Comfy Couch lives in our brains.
One suggestion- get some cake strips. They are fabric strips you soak in water and wrap around the outside of your cake pans. Cakes come out perfectly flat (no dome), and the edges never over bake. I started using these a few years ago. Game changer!

Fair play to you for the corn starch rolling. I'm a chef 10+ years and still screech if I have to deal with it. Got the shivers watching you
The Silver Fox jump brings me such joy.
I love the new 'beam in' technology. Gotta get me some of that. Maybe for beaming in wine! Gentle tip for cake construction-- get thee a lazy susan/spinny thing. You can spin it while you're constructing/decorating. I always put my cakes on a construction paper circle, then that on the spinner, then build the cake on that. Then you can get a wide spatula or a chef knife under it and move it on to a fancy cake plate when you're done. Also, I always freeze my cake before frosting it. It's much less vulnerable to breakage that way.
I remember seeing the guy make it on the show. It looked amazing!

A tip for layer cakes: bamboo skewers. Insert 3-4 vertically through the layers. No more Leaning Tower of Pisa cakes.

He should be hitting the half mil mark by now surely, his right up there with the most entertaining cooking shows on YT.
I'm just baffled that something with so much fondant won anything. I get cake decoration is an art and all that, but man, if I have to peel my cake to enjoy it, it's not really podium winner material, y'know. After the leaning and squishing in the middle it did turn out so much more pretty than I could've imagined.
You pick the most ambitious cakes & this was a winner for sure.
I love that you are debunking the myth that cooks cannot bake and vice versa. You just do it and take us with you. ❤
I used to work with Liam’s mum! Liam would be proud of you, Jamie!
Really good attempt. Such a lot of work in that. Fondant is too sickly to eat much. Liam now presents Junior Bake off in Britain, the kids are brilliant.
I appreciate the Big Comfy Couch reference with the ten second tidy. Fun fact: my dad worked on the show and I got to visit the set - I could tell you how they filmed the ten second tidy!
this youtube channel is probably one of the most perfect cooking shows i’ve seen, the videography is amazing, the creator is extremely charismatic, the editing is entertaining and to the point, and these recipes are great
26:31 Quick tip for the future, Jamie - If you need to dilute something down like this where you don’t intend to/need to keep the leftovers, just dump half of it out before diluting. That way, you need less diluent (aka. the vodka) to make a larger impact on the level of dilution. ETA: Alternatively, you could just take a small portion of your initial overly-concentrated mixture, separate it, and add just diluent (vodka). Chemistry principles for the win!
I hope you could hear me cheering all the way from London, Ontario! That was beautifully done!
Clicking on the video and liking now to bring up the engagement, I'll be back and watch the video in a couple hours 👍👍 Edit: it was great :)

Love that you use the call of the loon for your bleeps. My Canadian heart smiles every time. Thank you.
I thought I was the only person who hated the texture of cornstarch--skreek skreek. On another topic, I never had success with cakes until I learned to slow down and get them cold every so often while putting them together. This cake looks like it belongs on a fancy buffet, but I don't actually want to eat it. Make the crumble and put it on a regular banana or carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.
Great job plowing through, Jamie. The cake looked great. Crumble topping leftovers would be nice on yogurt.

This really has been the best channel I’ve subscribed to since the pandemic. I am thoroughly entertained and invested in these endeavors lol.
Jamie, you MUST make Povitica/Potica (puh-teet-za). It's a Slovenian "walnut roll"-type of bread. Potica was made very popular by the eastern Europeans who settled on the Iron Range, and in Duluth, MN during the late 19th - early 20th centuries, and recipes are as varied as those who made it. Povitica/Potica was featured on The Great British Baking Show, and I was ELATED!
I am REALLY impressed! That was quite an undertaking and for about four minutes it looked perfect lol
Jamie, try Rose Levy Beranbaum's cake books. She gives the best directions ever and I always use her recipes. Pecan is pronounced puh-cahn. I have no idea where pee-can came from.

Love the new teleport machine!
NGL, when the 'pancake siding' collapsed I laughed. I felt for ya, and you handled with good resignation. Seems you knew it was inevitable. I've concluded all construction projects must include the ingredients concrete and steel rebar _irrespective of context_ . Ergo, I shall not construct any cakes. Think I'd just have a teeming -bowl- Charlotte pan of crumble and whipped cream. Perhaps topped by a tablespoon or two of blueberry preserves. Or black cherry. At some point I'd drink the Grey Goose. I enjoyed the teleportation of the appliances.

"Charlotte pan!" Now there's a historic reference from a dedicated watcher!
Looks like one of those cakes that is designed to look good, and demonstrate skills, and the taste is third on the list. In musical terms, it would be "a test piece". Early Bake off series were very classic, but they have got more extreme over the years. Purchases for tall stackable cakes: Turntable cake board, dowels, and one of those wire cutters . Turntable was £20 last time I looked and cake boards in which to poke the dowels, couple of quid
Please enter a culinary channel competition! It would be great! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I knew from the moment i heard you that you are Canadian. The way you swear, hahahaha. Love yourself and your content. Loyal watcher from Alberta.
No lie, Jamie - In over 20 years of cooking, your beef with the texture of cornstarch is the single most bizarre food-related peeve I’ve ever come across. 😂
You don't need cornstarch to roll out fondant. Powdered sugar or a tiny bit of shortening does the job just fine. If you make a lot of fondant cakes, you might want to invest in a non-stick silicone mat for rolling out fondant. You also don't really need edible glue. Nine times out of ten, good old fashioned H2O or milk works pretty well to hold fondant in place, as long as whatever you're trying to glue isn't too heavy or delicate.
The whiz kid appearing via techno-magic teleporter was such an unexpected thing, made me laugh! The joy of the first silver fox appearance got a smile from me as well. There were some scary moments in there, but you saved the cake! it was really fun to watch you encounter issues along the way and then to fix them. A shame there wasn't more crumble going on according to the recipe when it was obviously so tasty. I eat the fondant. Grew up with some food insecurity issues, I am NOT about to waste that much food. If people have a problem with the taste of fondant, then they should have decorated their care with something tastier. You make your bed and you lie in it, you cook your cake and you eat it. Want to eat something tasty, make something tasty. Waste not want not.
If you do another three layer cake, try using a few kebob skewers to help keep it centered and stable as you slather the icing on it. Might help. And yes I eat the fondant. Sh!t's good, yo.
