This SP Is Way Too ADVANCED
I put together not 1 but 2 Game Boy Advance SPs each with 6 incredible mods. The difference between the 2 are the AMAZING new displays released by FunnyPlaying! One is using a new 3” IPS and the other is using the sweet ITA kit. One could say these Game Boys are way too ADVANCED!

The production quality of all your videos is amazing, from the timing of the opening song that covers the video overview and intro, to the rotating (and opening) GBA SPs, to the overall colour scheme, clean and audible narration, and useful camera angles when zooming in on boards and stuff. Always look forward to these, mostly because of the cool retro mods you showcase, but also because of the effort that goes into each video.

The reason for the USB-C to USB-A charging is probably due to the USB-C standards for charging. For USB-C to USB-C charging to work, the end connected to the power source communicates to the device to "ask" it what level of power it can accept. If the plugged in device doesn't have the required bits to respond back, then the power source won't send power because it is unsafe to do so. USB-A to USB-C gets around this because USB-A is an older standard that doesn't require the communication bit and just supplies flat power. They (FunnyPlaying) could've added components to their daughter board mod, but that would've increase the footprint of it and added complexity and manufacturing cost.

Actually, the reason the mod maker can't add C-to-C charging is because of the audio out capability. The 5.1 k-ohm resistors needed to safely negotiate 5 volts would also impede the sound too much. With regards to the DAC he used, it's being powered by the audio line, but not enough so he can barely hear. He needs a passive USB-C to 3.5mm cable and headphones with an aux port.

It case it isn’t clear: The hinges can only be properly ejected with the screen open to the detent position. There are tabs and grooves that only align in this position. It can be very hard to access the left hinge when opened to the detent. You can use the 3D printed tool from Makho or cut down the cone piece from a Bic Round Stic ink pen so that the tube that fits inside the pen body will fit tightly between the hinge clips and the plastic rib in the GBA. Once inserted, open the screen frame to the detent position and use something long/thin to poke through from the right side (remove the right hinge first, of course).

The USB C headphone dongle has to be one *without* its own DAC because it uses the GBASP's own internal analogue audio output. I use a red and white OnePlus dongle and it works like a charm. These USB C ports aren't reversible for charging purposes, because it uses the port's innards to recreate the functionality of the official Nintendo dongle - the mute and ground lines are internally shorted, and L/R/AGND go to the headphones. It's a much better solution than other GBA SP headphone mods that don't use AGND and therefore will cause damage to headphones over time!

About the low sound issue. If it's attempting to go through the basic hardware, those speakers have an incredibly low power requirement. Especially when compared to larger drivers for headphones. I remember finding a mod for a power amplifier to the speakers for a speaker that used to be produced some time ago that was considerably louder for the game boy advance SP. If my memory serves me, however, it does take the place of that LED mod. It sold onto the front panel around the speaker section. I'm not sure if this helps, it has been a minute since I've looked into this.

I did a full update on everything except the system board last year and I love it. I'm not a huge fan of the shell I got even though I love the way it looks. I figured I'd probably do another update on it some time, so I might go for this. I didn't want to remove the charging port, but dang it I'm tired of not being able to just use a USB-C cable to charge the thing. A few things for me to keep in mind. :) Otherwise I updated to the IPS screen, new battery, sound amp, power regulator, battery, buttons, shell, and of course a flash cart to have the library in my pocket. It's not cheap to do it all at once, but if you do one thing at a time it's not too bad. I recommend doing this though. I've played it more than I have since the system first came out back in the day. ABSOLUTELY worth it.

I did a lot of research on all the mods available for the GBSP, but since I'm using the original shell and buttons, I only decided to do the IPS kit and the Makho battery. Yeah, having to solder the battery is not ideal, but it is the highest capacity battery for the GBASP I could find. I looked at the same USB-C port/connector, but my cords/chargers are all USB-C to USB-C. Since I'd have to carry around an additional cable, not that I'm going to travel with my GBSP, the stock connector will still do fine.

The real drawback of the IPS is the hit to battery life. I have a GBA with the ITA and GBA SP with the IPS, both with lithium batteries of similar capacity, and the SP has nearly half the battery life using a rayovac pack from batteries plus, considered the best OEM replacement. With the original AGS101 LCD the battery life was noticeably better as well.

With these LED kits, i wonder how well they would work with an opaque shell but translucent buttons. I'm less of a fan of transparent cases, but i think it would be cool to have the buttons lit up indirectly like that.

Anyway, first i want to thank you because i have a similar problem with the sound and i thought i did something wrong, but my issue is that i have normal sound coming from the right headphone and lower sound from the left. I am using the dongle that came with my Xiaomi 8 phone.

If I remember correctly, the two 5.1k Ohm resistors (each on a CC line of the USB C port) that allow for 5V charging for the USB PD spec interfere with the audio out. So you have to pick one of the other, unless you do a separate mod for the headphone jack.

I haven't installed the USB-C mod yet, but good to know about the low volume issue. Though, I do have a similar low volume issue on my Galaxy S21 phone using an Apple USB-C to 3.5mm adapter with wired Apple Earpods. I prefer Android, but the Earpods fit me really well. I wish Samsung didn't end up following Apple in removing the headphone jack, it never gets as loud as the old model that still had it. Though, maybe I just need to try different USB-C to 3.5mm DACs.

For those wondering this exact setup (IPS) is 160 USD. Honestly I think thats still pretty decent considering how fleshed out this all is, how much work this was to individually develop, and the easy sourcing from one website. Also they have a clear speaker listed but currently out of stock, would fit really well with this setup.

USB-C has digital audio, but it also has an Audio Accessory Mode where the analog audio signal is routed directly to the D+ and D- lines. This is likely what the gameboy mod is using, in which case the built-in DAC in the dongle is irrelevant

the low volume issue may be an incompatibility between the external DAC and the internal amplifier. if your headphones are not drawing power from the amp, you get a weak signal resulting in low volume.
