I am from the Northeast and I had never heard of tamales until I moved to AZ. They are my favorite food on this planet ❤. Since Covid I haven’t been able to find any families that make and sell them. I need to try and figure out how to make them for myself 😊 Thanks for your recipe! Hopefully this will help my tamale addiction!

There's this lady who makes the most amazing tamales she is actually at the Tuba City swap meet every Friday but can also deliver in Flagstaff. She also makes different types too $20 for a dozen.

Judie…you CAN make them. Yes they are a lot of work. BUT…they are not hard to make. I was missing my Mama’s Tamales. Couldn’t find anyone to come close. Did internet search and found a Wisconsin couple (that’s where I was born and raised). And they’re way of making Tamales triggered my brain. I wrote everything down so that I could repeat in the future. Been making them ever since for the past 5..6 yrs. 🫔 Delicious! And when I come across someone who makes wonderful Tamales! I have paid up to $22 a dozen. No Regrets! Wishing you the best! Let me know if you attempt to make Tamales and how they turned out! You got this! 🌺🫔

😮💨I’m a black woman & my boyfriend is Mexican. I wanna start catering more to his culture with the dishes we eat. I asked his favorite dish he said tamales out of all things!! Which I just think is so intricate just bc the recipes varies family to family. I love chile in the masa too! Tamales gotta have some color but it really does add sooo much flavor. My mom jokes that tamales with no color look like they’re made with saliva 😂 sounds nasty but I totally get it

I make my tamales using butter instead of lard just as some of my fam doesn't eat pork at all. I don't know if it would be too much healthier tho. Coconut oil or canola oil I'd say would be the healthiest options that maybe might still work. Hope that's helpful

@@tammybanks3680 True story: I used to buy 'parking lot' tamales pretty much everywhere just to help people out until several years ago I saw this man hawking red chili tamales in a local Home Depot parking lot. Before I got to him while I was loading my truck, I saw him go between two cars to urinate. Finishing, he came out and then started taking warm tamales out of an ice chest warmer putting them into plastic bags a dozen each. Never washed his hands after touching his penis to pee. That did it for me.... no more parking lot tamales. Lol

just use banana leaves! The (savory and yummy) wax from banana leaves melt into tamale once wrapped, leaving it more savory and moist, I’ve never had a problem with a dry tamale w/ banana leaves, even after they have been in the fridge!

There is also beef tallow which is supposedly super good and flavorful. I haven't ever bought it but need to. I think thats way better than vegetable substitutes as it's flavorful and more like actual lard.

I am an old white grandma; make tamales numerous times a month, all year round. Taught my grandchildren how to make them, too. No big deal. It’s called FOOD, simple to make.
