As a Canadian living in the US, I was honestly surprised about the excitement when these nacho fries dropped. They’ve been on the menu in Canadian Taco Bells for as long as I can remember - at least 30 years - and I just assumed that the US had them as well.

Taco Bell actually did do a Nacho Fries Bell Grande version when they first released the nacho fries back in 2018, and still offer it at some locations, mainly the stand-alone restaurants. The combo restaurants almost always have a pared-down menu simply due to storage constraints. You're...not really missing much. It's better than the regular Nachos Bell Grande because fries instead of stale soggy mushy chips, but still.

I think it's the sweetness in the fry seasoning that makes these so good in my opinion. The fries with a slight sweetness alone tastes a bit weird, as would the super salty canned cheese sauce on its own. But that sweet and salty together is just completely addictive!

As someone who's made thousands of these and is just tired of them I appreciated the refreshing take on them. Seriously its just drop these frozen fries in a frier we barely clean and after splash them with seasoning. That's it. I was the only one to even use a flipping technique to evenly coat the fries. I've always wanted to work in a restaurant and learn to be a real chef and working there because of need felt suffocating and these were the worst things. Ive made homemade fries before and Taco Bell is just lazy. Just an edit: I have since this post found a job I absolutely love where I can cook in a big kitchen and I help kids in rehab now. I'm so happy and a couple comments here really gave me motivation to try and get my shit together. It's only been 6 or 7 months since I started here but every day is a lesson.

Also, fast foods are known for making pre-made ingredients that what the kitchen needs to do is do minimal effort to cook it right.. Just to serve dishes quickly as they can... So if more effort is needed to do pre-made, then maybe, more preservatives will be added too.

This was a weird one for me because I have a weird love of Taco Bell’s Nacho Fries (I think it’s just a guilty pleasure at this point) but I 100% agree with Josh’s critiques. When I very first tried nacho fries (like when they were introduced in 2018), my brain did that short-circuiting thing where the food is good but not what I expected. And it’s that weird sweetness. I expected them to taste like taco seasoning (like that you get from a McCormick packet) but they taste more like BBQ Lay’s. But I’m apparently a sucker for nacho cheese and battered/fried potatoes.

My husband bought these fries the other day and I was furious at the wasted money…until I tried them. SO fluffy and good! Sadly, Taco Bell isn’t consistent, as most fast food chains are especially with random menu items. So I’m definitely going to whip this recipe out next time we want them!

The nice partv is, some of the you could prep ahead. Like the slice blends would be easy to jar ahead, and you could make extra just to shake on leftover rotisserie chicken or a pile of scrambled eggs, the potatoes you could par boil in a big ass batch and freeze the extra once they've cooled down, the curse sauce keeps your a week easy, so again, make ahead, drizzle on eggs, or over a slice of pizza, whatever. The only real a la minute stuff to this recipe is heating your fry oil and making the batter to dredge the fries. You could absolutely keep the dry team of the batter premixed ahead too, should keep for months, and just add water when you're ready to make fries.

As delicious as these look, they're missing a crucial ingredient. The thing that makes the nacho fries so unique is that slight tanginess they have. I think it's either lime salt, or just a small amount of citric acid, probably the latter cause of mass production. It gives it this zing that I really like even if it's just junk food.

Josh's tangent about needing to hit the fries with seasoning right after they come out made me have flash backs to something I think Burger King might of done a long time ago. I'm pretty sure it was with their fries you would get a baggy of powder ( haha) you were supposed to put your fries in and shake them up ypurself mind you they thought it was a good idea to have you mix these together after the fries had been sitting in a bag for a ride home. I remember just the straight up clumpy powdery and heart burn inducing mess these things caused. I only ever asked for them once and then basically got an aversian to BK fries because of those things.
