Wonderful recipe In the Southern part of India 🇮🇳 we make a flaky bread known as Malabar Parotta which is made with Refined flour, milk and some people add eggs. Vegetarians only add Milk, Salt and Sugar and make it as a dough.

Beautiful. I make rotis daily and I use whole wheat flour. Instead of cutting in half I fold it over again into a triangle and roll it out. But my initial dough ball is much smaller and I also add pinch of salt in my dough. The roti is very flaky and super soft. Thank you for sharing your Grandmom's recipe.

The words Tawa , Roti, Baigan, Choka.....are all Indian originated. The style of kneading dough, rolling the rotis with Bailan, layering with oil n final roti peda making are, all Indian. The whole process of layered roti making with Tawa, Chakla n Bailan has firm Indian origin. This kind of rotis are v v famous in Bihar, UP, Bengal n Odissa n eaten daily in breakfast with chokhas n bhajias!! Most of Island nations have huge settlements of Indian migrant. So Indian food is eaten fondly!!!
Hi Mathew..Thankyou greatly and your Grandma too for the super Roti she made and with your lovely explanation!!! just so wonderful..I am going to make it too!!♥️♥️
I really appreciate this. My family is from Guyana ( I am first generation born American ) and my mom never taught me and my grandparents have all passed away. They came here and didn’t show me the old ways, wanted to raise me American. I only have some memories but not enough to recreate. Now I finally have the actual measurements and I do remember the technique. I am very grateful you guys did this. I have my own kids now and they are curious, so I learn to pass down to them what I can. I hope my kids have things like this as we go on in life. ❤❤❤❤❤

Hi Matthew, I made this roti with the 5 roses flour and I think the choice of flour brand made a difference because it has a lower protein level compared to other flours, which resulted in a more soft and tender roti. Thanks for sharingvyour family's secrets with us. No more hard roti☺!

Loved to see your video. It is a pleasure to see how skillfully she folds the dough, rolls the roti and turns the roti on stove with bare hands. Brushing oil gives it a soft crispy texture. We in India, sometimes brush ghee or melted butter on it. But in your process tearing the roti and thumping them make them super soft. I have seen this unique style of making roti in a street side shop in Kolkata. They call it Pittai parotta, that means beaten parotta. Oil roti is a better name no doubt. 👍

Beautiful. We make this in India. Guyanese moved from UP India for rubber cultivation. We do not add baking powder. You could mix the oil and flour and make it like a paste and add between 2 rounds and make four rotis at a time. But loved it as I loved grandma wrinkled hands rubbing ghee when in tava melted my heart, so homely. One more tip is we put the roti in a lunch box and shake it vigorously, to avoid holding hot rotis for beginners. Thank you once again
