Hi all! I know this past week has been absolutely heart-breaking regarding the situation in Ukraine, and I wasn't sure if I should even be posting my usual content when so many are being affected. It's something I think doesn't really have a RIGHT answer, but I figured if posting could provide a bit of an escape and entertainment to even a few people who need it, it would be worth it. I'll also be donating this video's adsense earnings to Ukrainian charities. I didn't want to wait for those numbers to roll in, so I've already donated $500 to UNICEF to help Ukrainian children (will donate more accordingly). I sincerely hope my posting "funny" content isn't taken as not caring for the situation, but to hopefully provide some wholesome escapism in an otherwise terrible time. Thank you & I love you all!

Oh gosh. Honestly this. I had a very uncomfortable talk with myself just yesterday about this. It's not even the 75$ worth of craft supplies it's the time investment. I have to keep reminding myself that time is valuable and I should only make things I adore because I won't have time for all of it. Clothes thrifting is literally the worst. I love something but I swear everything I find needs some sort of work done to it.

I've got some problems with chronic illnesses and pain, and there's only so much I can do before I'm either exhausted, or beyond my physical limits, pain wise, which gets *really* frustrating! Like with this embriodery project that I've been really excited to start, and now that I've started it, I've realised that it's a lot bigger, and going to take a lot more time and stamina than I thought... I've got plenty of time, but I can't do as much in it as I'd like.

Many of the DIYers that I’ve followed from their beginnings, and cherished for their imperfect charm and realism, have kinda gone “commercial.” And while I still enjoy their content, I miss that “just a normal person trying to make things” charm. (sorry if I spelled her name wrong, there are a million ways to spell it) They're a super sweet and wholesome couple that like making really interesting things and experimenting with different materials. You should use the cabinet as a moss terrarium! The door is perfect for misting it and other than that it’s basically maintenance free. Creating a vertical composition will be interesting, but you could use/do all sorts to things (eg just surround the outside perimeter, have ledges that jut out to drape stuff on, make a tiny swing, float fairies or some small decorations with fishing line) Alternatively, fake ant farm.

The wood would probably go mouldy fairly quickly if it was a terrarium so maybe not the best idea. But a fake moss display would work 🙂

I love the term "maker". When people find out I'm artistic they're always asking "Oh do you draw?" Well yeeeah... but I paint, I sew, write, I make costumes, set decorations, makeup effects, jewelry, and this, and that, and the other thing. "Crafty" makes it sound like I'm making wreaths or knitting or something. "Maker" encompasses the true essence of a human tornado. People who are good at a ton of things but maybe not an expert at any ONE thing. Well, except maybe expert at hiding the hot glue and the messy stitches lol.

True essence of a human tornado, I think that's a perfect description of Rachel, honestly. And yeah, maker does feel like it fits better than crafter, I think, maybe even if only that the connotations are that crafts are superfluous time wasters and made stuff may be less so? I too do a litlte of everything, perhaps not as well as a professional, but probably better than someone who's never bothered to try it. And if there's one thing sewing, auto body repair, woodwork, beadwork, crocheting, painting, baking, drywalling and armourmaking have in common, it's that making mistakes is how you learn, and learning how to fix or hide the mistakes is definitely worth learning, perhaps the most important part.

The term maker is more like problem solver, create as many issues as you like and figuring out how too fix them.

Its nice to see someone sanding down an ugly paint job to bare wood and staining it. I've seen too many "upcycling" vids where someone takes some gorgeous antique furniture, then absolutely ruins it with a tacky paint job or slapping wallpaper or a collage on it. Sure, its great for cheap modern furniture, but I've seen to many once stunning antiques destroyed.

I don't know if this relevant but your comment reminded me of these DIY videos instagram kept recommending me that were kind of the opposite of what your talking about where someone would take really pretty or interesting wood stained furniture, strip it all off and just leave it naked wood. Then they would style it in kind of a boring beige room.

You can do it! Practice makes perfect!

With paint stripper, if you put tinfoil over it and leave it overnight, then that would soften the paint nicer in you've got multiple layers. The tinfoil prevents the paint stripper from drying out/evaporating meaning it can sit on the paint longer

The best thing about getting a new bigger house is that there's so much room for random little decorations! The more you add the cozier it feels!

I’m a guy who hasn’t been clothes shopping in about a decade but I legit clicked on the video because I read the title and saw her outfit. Thinking “I’ll like this person”

The Terrarium turned out really well. Do you have anything left of your Bridal bouquet, as that would display really well in the cabinet. Or over the next year collect leaves from all four seasons and gradually add them to the terrarium. Or as you seem to love Autumnal colours, next autumn collect from the plants around you and display them all year long. It was great to have a few minutes watching 'normal' things, rather than the situation that is unravelling in Ukraine.

Hi Rachel, I have to be honest - the minute I saw the finished painting in my mind the scene was this: *Rachel sitting with a couple of grandkids* "Grandma Rachel where did you get this?" "I painted it." "What did you paint it from?" "That's the field your Grandpa and I walked through to get to the restaurant on our honeymoon." In other words, you just painted an heirloom. Is it fabulously expensive? No. But it is a piece of your family history that deserves to be cherished and shared with the kids, grandkids, and great grandkids.

I wish we had big "thrift stores" in the UK; closest we have are charity shops which are often very small, ie shop floor the size of one room, and overpriced. That cabinet is a DREAM.

Rachel, here's a thought on the terrarium. A small butterfly or a couple of ladybugs, etc. to really set the scen e. With the foliage you already have in there, anyt insect variety would work and give it that natural uality you may be looking for. good luck. Enjoyed your process. And you're right--time spent in creation is never time wasted. :D

Absolutely adore the Little House on the Prairie school teacher with Dunkies vibe. The vibes are just -chef kiss- immaculate

The plastidip idea is BRILLIANT. I may have to do that when I paint my skulls. Been trying to get a chrome finish on one but it's wayyy too porous.

I love the idea of painting a landscape from a special memory! Yours turned out so beautifully, and you’ve definitely inspired me. I will absolutely be doing this.

For the cabinet - some vintage postcards or greeting cards to display inside with fresh plants from the yard would be cute. Maybe something seasonal would be cute. You could put one of those battery packs of lights in there or just a battery pack candle in it. I really love it!

Timothee Chalamet’s bottom 😂 I see those little boot things all the time and thought they were weird but you have inspired me to pick one up! Love that these thrift flips are things that we could actually find at the thrift store. It’s frustrating watching these videos when the original item is something impossible to find.

I'm betting that if the 'ominous sheep' had been portrayed in that painting, Nick would have guessed it right off. Thanks for the fun and smiles. Take care.

Omg you just gave me the idea to paint that photo of "sheep by night". You know, the one with sheep in a dark field and only their eyes glowing! Lol.

The painting feels so darling and special, Rachel, and the frame restoration turned out lovely. I think you accidentally just made a family heirloom!

How would you go about testing for lead? Do you lick it and see if you get lead poisoning?

Your painting is so good! I was not expecting much because the pic you chose was a lot of monotone green which is so hard to paint, but your painting was very pretty! Definitely the spirit of the image with more visual interest. Wish I had a drop of that talent lol

Can I just say, the commitment to your first Tim Burton-esk outfit is emasculated. I was watching you work with those sleeves and thinking how I would have had to change 2 minutes in. I applaud you.

Great video. Made me smile all the way. My idea for your little "cabinet" would be to change the contents out seasonally, or with the holidays. Fall leaves would look great in it. And then winter greenery with a few holly berries. What ever you choose, it will be cute. Love your little painting as well. I love small paintings as well. I have even painted a lighthouse scene on a sand dollar. Have a great week!!!

I felt like I was in a classroom on a relaxing rainy day with the kindest teacher in school doing a whole day of crafts at the end of the year. Sooooo perfect 🌻

First, that all looked AMAZING! And second, I’m pretty sure we had that “art-sparagus” in my childhood home. If it is what I think it is, it was actually lavender. There were a couple of them and they were painted as well so I guess that one had seen some DAYS... My mom kept them in the bathroom and I’m pretty sure they were from Target in the very early 2000s. 😅

Only Rachel could make a video with an entire section only with sanding actually funny and entertaining!! Loving the endeavor so far!

That thrift up terrarium idea is boss! My friend’s birthday is next month and she does love plants. I think I’ll try to make a version of that ✨but make it hippie hillbilly✨ so it fits her aesthetic. Thanks Rachel you’re coming through with birthday ideas! Stay epic Troll floor Queen!

I love Savers. I work at a youth shelter and I like to take outings to Savers to teach about budgeting, creativity, and repurposing. I also love the sheets for sewing. I literally made a steampunk wraps skirt from a shower curtain.

That landscape is stunning. I love the color blocking and the white sky. Beautiful

As someone who’s felt like I’m spiraling a lot lately it’s so nice to have your videos, and I hope you make them as long as you’re able to and comfortable to. I definitely feel a happy escape in your videos, it’s what has kept me around since (almost) the beginning of your channel. You bring joy to so many people, and we’re all happily watching. ☺️❤️

Big fan started watching back when you used to make how to style modern clothes vintage, and stayed for pop culture references of my childhood 😄

I would put battery operated lights in that clear cabinet to make it like a little lamp. You could change out with flowers or a picture that makes you feel happy. Its all so cute!

As a teenager, I stripped all the paint from the woodwork in my bedroom. I was going for a natural wood look. I finished it all after sanding and staining with polyurethane. Unfortunately, the wood turned out to be a poor-quality wood, designed to be painted, so it didn't look great. Bless my mom for her support of my doing this project. After I left home for college, she redecorated my room painting all that woodwork again. I love your updated thrifted items!
