Making quick & easy pucker toe moccasins.
In which I make a pair of simple pucker toe moccasins.
I'm trying to learn how to make this sort of video more interesting, so any feedback is appreciated.
For those of you who have watched this and the "making leggings" video, let me know if you'd prefer that sort of background music, as opposed to background silence.
Apologies for the weird video color in the second half. It was a very hot day and my camera started malfunctioning and periodically oversaturated or darkened the image. I had to do a lot of color correction, which didn't always work out.
I didn't notice until I had finished, and the only alternative to my poor fix would be to start over from the beginning and make a fresh pair. And that's not worth my time.

This is what I was looking for. Now I am on the search for buffalo hide. I have moccasins, but they are too loose. You have solved this problem. Thanks
Superb. I hike with heavy duty military boots and I was looking to buy some lightweight shoes for when Im loitering in camp. (taking my giant boots on and off, every time I get in the tent, is a huge chore). Well I have a box of scrap leather, a tool kit, and I just found this video. Instead of buying some shoes I am going to try and make a pair of these instead. Thank you!

As someone who prefers hiking in minimalist footwear and NOT having an empty wallet, this tutorial rules. How many miles of wear can someone reasonably expect from this?

Very inspiring and clear, thanks Malcolm. I have tanned a couple of Red deer hides and a shorn sheepskin so it would be good to put some of that to use. I am a little nervous about getting this right. I’ll try a practice run on an old blanket before committing to hide. At worst I will waste some old blanket, and at best I will have some blanket moccasins as slippers as well.

It's hard to screw it up catastrophically and you can always make adjustments after you're finished. One word of advice, it's easier to fix something that's been made too big than something made too small.
this video is soooooooo appreciated!!! i will be making these tonight for my native dress i am making as well! Thank you!! Awesome job!

Give it a try. It's not so difficult, and worst case scenario you end up with something ugly but comfortable.
Glad I came across this when I did, I'm wanting to make my own pair of soft sole moccasins for powwows. Hopefully I have enough material left from my dress to make a matching pair!

do you know what thickness of leather you used for these? i followed along trying to make my own pair but i think the leather was too thick. i love the videos, thanks so much!
@MalcolmPL
2 жыл бұрын
About an eighth of an inch. If the puckering didn’t work out, what you might try is resewing using every other hole and see if that improves things. Or skip every third hole. Thicker leather requires fewer holes, as the skins can’t compress as much.
Out here in califorina most tribes from what I have learned wore side seem moccasins, yucca sandals, just went barefoot or never invented shoes of any kind.
I wonder if you do the same thing if you were to use fish skin instead?
@MalcolmPL
3 жыл бұрын
Here's something I found. collections.gilcrease.org/object/93140a-b I'd imagine they would be very water resistant, but might not be the most durable as most fish have quite thin skin.

Maybe three. It depends on how well you piece them.
I cant figure out how you stitch the heel at the fold.
How long was the leather string you used for the toes?

About two feet, I just make them from scraps and if it ends up being too short, just splice on another section.

Can I use cow leather, and if so, would you recommend Crome tanned, or veg tanned?
@MalcolmPL
Ай бұрын
Cowhide works provided you don't go for the really really thick stuff. I haven't tried it with veg tan, but it can be quite stiff, so if you go for that you might have to soak it to achieve the puckering effect.

You said you were trying to make the video more interesting, but it was plenty interesting. My only suggestion would be to show the details on attaching the tongue-insert to the moccasin more clear. We're missing details on that.

It’s the most straightforward part. Just a simple running stitch, and make sure you don’t sew them up so far that you can’t get them on.

@@MalcolmPL but telling someone how to make a part of the moccasins can't substitute for showing how it's done. You had asked for suggestions on how to make it better, and I'm telling you that there's instructional empowerment in showing, that showing is superior teaching to mere words.

For winter ones you need to sew them finer so that the snow can't get in through the holes. You also need a fur liner or socks.

So, I've just now learned the benefits of walking without modern shoes and am looking into all these great tutorials like these, but when I found your video there was something so incredibly nostalgic about your voice and I couldn't figure out what it was! But I just figured it out. When I was about 5 years old, my grandpa used to play all kinds of music and sounds on his old record player for me, but none could compare to the National Geographic flexi-disc that had all the huantingly beautiful humpback whale sounds on it. I loved it so much that he made me a casette tape of it and I used to put it into my little casette player and fall asleep to it every night. You may be wondering, what does this have to do with me? LOL Well, the narrator sounds SO much like you that I had to share it. haha Thanks for bringing back good memories. I'll leave a link to the video so you can judge for yourself. xD kzread.info/dash/bejne/YouDzKyCqdGul7A.html Also, thank you for this tutorial! I would rather make the winter moccasins and I haven't seen such a simple way of making them! Also, are they very warm? I imagine they aren't waterproof at all, but would they hold up at all in the rain? Just curious. :) Thanks again!
@MalcolmPL
2 жыл бұрын
They aren't terribly warm by themselves. They need either a liner of fur or felt or else some wool socks. With thick socks they're good to minus thirty. In terms of waterproof, you can treat them with oil to make them resist wet snow or wet grass. But you can't make them proof against puddles.
You need more click bate.

I could make the thumbnail a closeup photo of me making some stupid expression, while in the background there are bodacious anime girls and a diamond minecraft pickaxe. Title, "I tried to make mocs and this happened! #unbelievable! #Ialmostdied!" Speaking seriously, I have no interest in misrepresenting myself or my channel for views. All that would do is set viewer expectations that I can't meet. Boring titles and thumbnails are an honest representation of what is on offer. I'm a subdued person. This is my subdued channel. What you see is what you get.
