Bakers tip: For buttercream you have to beat the butter alone for 5 minutes before adding the sugar and a small amount of milk. 💞👩‍🍳

@@s.uleika It's icing, really simple usually. Just three ingredients and you'll notice when you need to add more of smth. Honestly I never follow recipes when I bake. You always have to change up something, sometimes my eggs are just too big, or the oven needs less time, other setting,... Many times I need to also add more moisture, as in oil or water, maybe my brand of flour is just very drying? Or when I cook, I often play with the flavors and herbs. Cooking is really about making it your own, if you must always follow directions to a t, just go to the bakery

It also looked like there wasn't nearly enough butter. Should be mostly powdered sugar, then butter, and just a splash of milk. I agree with the others, you need to whip the butter for much longer before adding the sugar.

@@knightshade909 baking often involves eggs, I've never had a standard egg, so I very often need to subtract some eggs. Our chickens lay either really big or really really small ones. Or older eggs are more watery so I need more flour and sugar. Also if I decide to switch to soy or nut milk, the taste changes and I add more sugar or stevia. Also salt usually. Lots of things aren't cookie cutter in baking, the myth that baking has to be exact is long debunked.

In the end, she came out with incredible looking cakes and she seemed to have fun doing it and that's all that matters. You don't need to be perfect at everything to enjoy it and it's super comforting to see people in the public eye normalise that.

My mom used to do a small cake business and I helped her a lot, but when you frost the cake, you're supposed to start with a "crumb coat" which is essentially just a really thin layer of frosting (thin enough that you can see the cake through it), then you refrigerate it for a while and then go back and do more frosting over the crumb coat. It makes the frosting much more even. You can also get a flat spatula, dip it in hot water and run it along the sides and top to make the frosting SUPER smooth looking.

Baking Tips! When you are decorating your cake what you can do so your cake won't be moving around is use a little dollop of frosting on the cake stand When you are smoothing your cakes you can dip your smoother or spatula in hot water then dry it with a napkin and will make it easier for the cake to be smooth Side note: when you make buttercream frosting you have to first whip your butter until it is light and fluffy then add your powdered sugar and a splash of vanilla, mix that up until it is a good consistency then you can add a little bit of milk or heavy whipping cream if it is to stiff

Then you can scoop frosting and get it into the bag with both hands. Also, cake boards! You can buy cardboard circles so you don't have to scrape cakes off of the turn tables when you're done!

Hey Mia, I do have a few tips for you. 1. When frosting cakes offset spatulas come in handy, they help ice you cakes much easier and swifter. 2. The way you used the cake leveler was... Unique. I would recommend searching for videos showing how to use it, because it’s hard to put into words 3. Before frosting with the colours, apply a crumb coat, a crumb coat is a thin layer of icing that catches all the crumbs so that when you put the final layer of icing you won’t see any of the original cake colour in some spots. (2 layered crumb coats are most effective and remember to chill each layer of icing. 4. When applying icing start by doing the sides with not so much icing and do the top last and smooth the sides. 5. Different icing tips are very useful, they help pipe small lines, and there are even flower shaped frosting tips, but they need a bit of experience. 6. When trying to make icing, definitely use measurements if you aren’t used to making icing a lot 7. Use your measuring cups and spoons, they may take time, but it the end you can get a much better result when doing homemade recipes That’s all the advice I have, I don’t know if it useful but hopefully it helps you 💗 And always remember KZread is your best friend and always search for videos if you’re in doubt.

Hey Mia So I know I’m 2 years late to the party but as a cake decorator myself with a couple of certificates I’d love to give a couple of tips haven’t read all the comments so not sure if someone already mentioned them or not. When covering the cake with buttercream frosting best for the cake to be cold and frosting room temp. Place the cake board, plate or paper that the cake will be stored on, on the turntable before you put the cake on it to cover and decorate makes for much easier transfer and transportation when needed. (Also tip always make the plate, paper… larger than the base of the cake) Putting the icing bag in a tall glass or jar and folding the top over the edges makes putting frosting, icing, filling etc. inside so much easier especially if your doing it alone, the bag stays open and you can keep the top clean for easier refilling and squeezing it out. Hope that makes sense ❤ Absolutely love watching your videos btw 🥰🤗

Hello Mia of the past! Some advice, from two years in the future: If you don't have a grippy mat for your turn table, and aren't going to have cardboard on the bottom of your cake (please put cardboard on the bottom of your cake it makes moving everything easier and then you can just tape it to the turn table), you can use your frosting to stick it in place! Put a little blob of icing on the turn table, and either put the cake directly on that or put your parchment paper on that, put another blob, and then put your cake down. Buttercream makes for great decorating because it's very solid and sticks really well, and wiping those down after is pretty easy. Also if you do this again, I would just take one of those rounds and cut it in half, instead of stacking half of one on top of a full round. The filling in the middle and the frosting on top add a LOT of height to a cake, and there is only so much cake one person can and should eat in one sitting. Finally, this may have been said already but chill your cake after every step! Chill it after stacking your cake, so the filling hardens and keeps it stable while you apply your crumb coat. Chill it after applying your crumb coat so it's even more stable when you frost it for real. Chill it after frosting it so everything is firm and stable while you add the flourishes of decoration. Ideally you'd chill it for at least half an hour between steps but even ten minutes helps. Also, you can make the top of the cake more smooth by getting your metal spatula warm (you can dip it in hot water and dry it off, take a torch to it for two second bursts, or even just hold the tip between your hands until your body heat warms it up as long as your hands have been washed)- this will melt the very top layer of frosting as you smooth it!

Nothing wrong with using box cakes. I ALWAYS use them since my homemade cakes NEVER rise and that just breaks my confidence and hopes. A tip to make a box cake more delicious is to add some sweet condensed milk ( NOT TOO MUCH, a few tablespoons go a long way! ) some vanilla extract, and a bit of butter. If it's a chocolate box cake I recommend also adding cocoa powder and/or coffee. Also, to make it feel more homemade, you can whip up some egg whites and incorporate them into the batter. Box cakes really help us bakers who aren't confident enigh in our skills or run into issues while doing the actual baking step. It's also a huge help to people who are just getting into baking and/or are more focused on the decorating part. It's nothing to be ashamed of! 😊💛✨️

ik a lot of people are saying that Mia used the cake leveller wrong but as someone who doesn't know how to bake I didn't even give it a second thought. Tbh I would've used it the same way Mia did lmao

You think you’re going to fit a normal sized cake in that little area she did? She’s lucky she had small cakes or she would have been so confused why the cake didn’t fit between the metal and the wire. The feet of the cake cutter should be put on the table and use a saw like motion to cut across to get a level cake. Hence why hers wasn’t even lol

I’m by no means a “professional” baker, BUT! I do have a couple tips! Firstly, if you don’t want bits of cake popping through your frosting, you want to do what is called a crumb coat. A light layer of frosting, let it set in the fridge, and then apply more frosting after, like.. 20 minutes. Secondly, to fill the piping bags, it’s easier to place the bag in a cup and then fill them from there so you don’t have to hold it and fill at the same time! Third, when frosting the cake, ( if you want to leave it on the cake stand ) put a bit of parchment around the edges of the cake and pull away once done frosting. It’ll make it easier to keep a “clean” look! And fourth, the tool you were using to cut the cakes is actually meant to be held upright. Though you can really use it however you wish, it’s meant to be held like that specifically to make even layers! All you do is pull it along the counter while moving it in a sawing motion! Additionally, and this is really just a personal preference, but I would have done the cakes in three layers with frosting in between each! It’ll evenly disperse the frosting on the inside of the cake so you aren’t getting too much in one bite at the bottom/top and will also even out the cake a bit better while maintaining the same height! I hope these help with your next baking adventure! These cakes were absolutely adorable and I actually really want to make some of my own, now! 😁
