I had the opportunity to talk with Embark Studios level/environment team about their approach to map design, the inspiration behind the visual style and some of the challenges encountered during development. This interview was conducted at the beginning of Season 2 but I had to wait for clearance in order to publish, which caused the delay. Enjoy!

Sys$horrizon is probably the most innovative looking fps map in gaming. Hats off to its creators.

@@guillaume_Chr they’ve shared that they are around 100, but not a specific number. Also keep in mind they’re working on Arc Raiders in parallel

I’m currently a student studying 3D and VFX, I’m in love with this game so it’s absolutely amazing being able to have insights and knowledge of the journey the developers went through to create such an awesome environment. Thank you for this video 🙏

No worries, it came out when it was meant to. The time was right for us, the viewer. It feels like a great send-off for the season before S3.
I remember how back when Sys$horizon launched, me and my friends sort of made up a theory about it. We thought that perhaps because its "unfinished" and its got no variants like the other maps maybe one day they would actually finish it and reveal the irl location its based on. And then its current "glitched" version will perhaps become a variant of it, just like Vegas has a sandstorm variant. Anyway, great video man!

This is a common theory I’ve seen as well and it’d be super interesting to see something like that happen! Even if it’s to some extent that doesn’t reveal the inspiration behind the POIs, it’d be awesome.

This is an extraordinarily high quality video, you deserve way more attention for how high quality your work is! I also liked how you changed the sound of your voice to denote who was speaking as it made it a far easier to follow interview, that attention to detail really makes this interview way more interesting to watch!

I absolutely love SYS$HORIZON, one of the most fascinating and aesthetically pleasing maps I've seen in games, and I totally enjoyed the video, an insightful dive into the minds of the devs, and its overall quality.
Awesome video. Love the behind the scenes and background information.
I love Embark for what they have given us. Mirror's Edge is one of my favorite games of all time and to have an FPS made by the same people is just a dream to me.

As a person that loves game design and loves art in general i think they did a very good job in this map and the general theme as a whole. I wanna point out that those details that they mention add a lot to the map since at its very core its a bit of a boxy design. As a player tho i do want to say that this swayed a little from the clean esthetic that the season 1 had aka that gameshow look. I do understand the vision and i love the concept.

Man, that fps perspective with the anti grav cube was **chef's kiss** . I can't believe I had never looked at the ceiling of the map! It looks so good and detailed. No lie, it makes me wanna get a vr setup just to chill there.

Very interesting, helped me really understand what I felt was wrong with the game from a level design point they just skipped the step entirely.
Its literally structured like Siege of Shanghai from bf4 like it makes you feel like youre in part of a small part of a bigger city 🔥✨️ living for it i wish people could see the beauty and magic this game has to offer.
I am absolutely gutted that the Embark team were in Kyoto and I had no idea. I would of hopped on a train and bought them lunch and got an autograph

I want a jungle map with virtual animals and stuff to make it seem more real or a giant mall or waterpark, I hope they will add more game modes like prop hunt, 2v2s, gun game, and whatever I can't wait to see what this game comes up with. They can take as long as they want. "Anything can happen in the finals"

An interview like this about Skyway Stadium would be interesting since it's also not a real place, and seems like Embark had a specific mission when creating this map (which may as well have been "having a new map for the open beta"). Anyway, it worked out great and is a map I never tire of playing (except power shift, damn snipers)

They said in the AMA that they were planning on adding variations to SYS$HORIZON. Maybe one of those variations could be that they replace the roads between buildings with the deathpits that they originally planned!
This has nothing to do with the video but a black and white map that looks like the thumbnail would go absolutely BONKERS!!

The Finals maps are one of the best I saw in Fps games what ever they come up with am all way in.
1 level design is insane to think about the 3 maps they pulled off.
I really love that you take a deeper jab into the Finals as it feels as though the works of the game design EXPERTS that are employed under Embark are largely underappreciated, not only because the game was wrongly played and dropped like a CoD-clone for the first season of its existance by the mainstream but also from more experienced players because of thought processes like "why should map design matter if the natural progress is for all of it to get destroyed anyway". There is some true gold laying under this game that will only get noticed either by a handful of people or through a matter of time. And its all dependant on the game design prowess of the experienced team behind it, there's no doubt in my head that Embark will develop some of the best video games of the 2020's. Perhaps the only thing I didn't like about SysHorizon at first was due to everything being the same color and texture, I could not tell which surface would be susceptible to what sort of damage, which surface would break in what pattern, etc. and also due to the glitched theme of the map, many breaking noises always tricked me for a Light class becoming invisible/visible in the vicinity...

I concur with your comments about Embark and how people perceive their games! As for the map itself, although it wasn't part of the interview, the team is aware of some of these issues that players experienced with the arena. Let's hope they can work on it and even bring in more variations that improve the player experience. Thanks for your comment!
Good video..I think Embarks biggest issue right now is map readability. Vegas and Sys Horizon has this issue. The theme of the map especially makes it hard to remember room layouts and interior layouts. Seoul, Skyway, and Monoco do not have these same issues.

Syshorizon is a cool map but Seoul, Monaco and Skyway are my favorite

Haha, I think keeping it a mystery adds to the immersion of the “loading realm” and sets it apart from other maps as well. Thanks for watching!
I actually prefer some of the early iteration artsyle/colors. The final version is painful to look at my eyes get strained and tired especially in the night map, going from the bright red interiors into a dark street is so uncomfortable.

They definitely took a risk with the map direction, but it could benefit from some improvements when it comes to readability.

I really love this game and the fact embark really works on every single detail Man its a crime to play this game for free Regularly pushing updates checking on feedbacks ADDING GOTH SKIN yea this game or i should say A master piece in fps Sorry for yapping lmao but the only thing i dont like is the community a bunch of babies i avoid even talking to the weapons balances makes my brain rot
Lovely video, just one small bit of feedback. I suggest not covering up their faces with their names, it makes it as if they were convicts or bad people that don't deserve their eyes seen, but overall I really enjoyed watching it. Thanks Spear!

the map team, the art team are incredible, but the balancing team is destroying the game. Hopefully they hired some new balancing team employees to make s3 incredible
