Making of Obi-Wan Kenobi PART 01 Sculpting a likeness in zbrush

This is the first part of my Obi-Wan Kenobi: Making of tutorial series.
In this part, I'll go over my key techniques that I use when trying to create a good likeness sculpt in zbrush, from the blockout stage to the small form detailing stage.
Patreons will have access to my full, unedited version of the videos as well as early access to my future tutorials.

    Can you save a specific angle to jump back on the side view to make the side of the face? and when you worked on the front the image reference was always turned on and when you worked on the side you made the edit the image dissaperead you stop sculpting the image returned how did you do that you pressed on a key or it was automatic if it was how did you kept the reference locked when you sculpted the front? ** I'm learning zbrush from videos but have not bought it yet but I wanna get familiar with UI before buying.

    Hello there! Hehe. Nice making of series dude! Really like them. One question: you used morph target before subdividing, so you won't lose the initial forms, does this trick affect displacement/normal maps down the road? I saw people write on forums of zbrush that 'subdivide without losing volume / morph target trick" affects displacements in bad way, are they wrong?

    Question, does the perspective and focal length distort the model at all when it comes to modeling for a video game or 3d printing? For example I recently did a self portrait that I sculpted with no perspective and when I exported it as a fbx and view it outside of zbrush it looks distorted. If you where doing this likeness for a toy or a game would you use different reference or a different perspective?

  • @Adamocg

    @Adamocg

    3 жыл бұрын

    The perspective camera in other 3D packages will vary, I think Maya is about 35mm by default but you can always change them. No, I would sculpt exactly the same for a toy or game, there's always going to be some slight mismatches in distortion happening when using reference, unless you have lens attributes for your images or you use scan data. Over time you get better at assuming certain focal lengths and your sculpt gets closer to a 1-1 match.

    I know this video is old. I am hoping you'll still see this comment to reply. I have 2 questions. 1) The program you use for the photos, I am having a hard time hearing what you're saying exactly, I heard Pura or Peora, but could not find it by a simple google search, was hoping it was in the description, but it is not. The second question is concerning the use of base mesh. I am trying to do this exact likeness for DAZ Genesis 8.1 Male. So I need to keep the geometry otherwise it messes up more things down the road (I think one of the commenters alluded to it). The Iray Renderer will allow you to do Subdivision level 6, so I assume, using ZBrush if I just have Dynamic Subdiv on, and set to smooth subdiv 6, I can do all of this without changing the base geometry. DAZ works off of Morphs, so I'd be re-importing the sculpted mesh into DAZ and then it would translate the delta's into a Morph wheel. If you're familiar with this process, is there a chance you could do a video on it?

  • @Adamocg

    @@Adamocg Heh, I'm sure it doesn't help that I spent my youth inside of cars that would make your ears and nose bleed if they were turned up all the way, and my weekends throwing raves. LOL. But thanks for clarifying the program name. And yes, I am using their base mesh (Genesis 8.1 Male Character) to sculpt on. It has a starting Polycount fo 259,136 KP (Full Body + Eyes + Teeth), which is making it kind of hard to do the initial blocking out. I wonder if I there's someway to reduce the resolution first and then bring it back up without affecting the base geometry...
