Hence why you have to "manage the heat" because a dull cutting tool will cause a lot or friction. Alec, while the runout you ended up with on the nylon wheels is probably fine for a dog treadmill, another method you could have used to turn them down would be to mount them in the lathe on an axle using the installed bearings. That way, the turned edge of the wheel would be concentric with the axle and bearings. You would need to use a lathe dog (or similar) however to keep the wheel rotating with the axle instead of spinning on the bearings.

  • @2212db

    @2212db

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@AlecSteele I'm not sure how running a belt on 2 convex pulleys would work, to be honest. Your current set-up should work, but will require both axles to be exactly parallel to each other and perpendicular to the frame. No pressure! It might be worth designing something into the build where you can adjust the axles fore and aft to compensate for any run-out on the belt.

  • @digitaIgorilla

    heads up, when you use those combo bits (drill, thread, and countersink). its really easy to snap them when you hit the threads after going full tilt for the drill aspect, be aware!

    I was just few days ago searching the interwebs to some plans for dog treadmill, and I cannot believe that you are making one. I also have a malinois and during the winter we can't really go outside every day because it's very very cold, I think I'm gonna be doing this treadmill for her, Thanks Alec

    Hopefully my design works otherwise I wouldn’t follow what I did 😅😅. I’m in the same boat as you, hard to get the dog exercised enough with how early it gets dark in the winter 🙏🏻

    If you ever have to mill a Plasti thingy like that again you can grind a or cut a groove down to the desired circumference so the shavings will only ever be one circumference long

    If you have a wheel you want to turn, just machine a boss for the bearing, with a threaded hole on the end, put the wheel on the shaft, and tighten a cup that sits on the wheel's wall. You can use a holesaw for the cup. This also helps with stringing, since you can cut thicker cuts and make it easier, even without using the proper plastic tooth.

    put a shopvack just above the cutting tool, where the stingy nylon flies away, it will suck the "filament" right in. You won't have a single piece of plastic in your shop. + it's super satisfying to watch.

    Metal will usually shrink down the middle of the weld joint. So adding a super thin shim or two in between your blocks and letting it cool while clamped should get you the results you are looking for. Preheating the whole area that you are welding is another way to help.
