    Glad you went in and just thinned the sides out to get the bolster-handle joint down, there was a tiny rise around the pin section (which I wouldn't have cared about but the judge would) that also got reduced and tidied up the lines. I think from a process point of view, its often why I'd use a neutral material spacer- brass, g10, micarta etc, which tends to sort of blend the two materials together easier as well as a bit of a trick of the eye. Which doesn't necessarily hide a lot of sins, but you don't notice them as much :) Otherwise, its a classic looking knife which hopefully meets all the technical requirements

    I know the rules for the Journey man knife is to stop at grit 400, but MAN this one would have been a beaut if you had gone 800, 1200, 2000, 5000 on it. The iron wood and bullet wood buffs SO pretty that they deserve a blade with an unreal shine. Hope you're going to do something like that once you have your Knife Smith Association letter of acceptance :D

  • @TyrellKnifeworks

    How beautiful is that knife! I loved it, it looks like a very professional job on your part. I really liked the finish and the nice wood you used for the handle. There is a wood called snake wood, it is very hard and has stains like snakes, hence the name, maybe in the future you should try to make a knife handle with that wood. I'm sure it looks great on you. regards

    Nice looking drop point. Desert ironwood is one of my favorites too. Got to ask... why not pot the handle, shape it with the bolster, then pull it off and add a slight chamfer for an heirloom fit? Either way it looks great.

    I have tried buffing non stabilized wood before and it came out trash, all the pores filled up with buffing compound, and overall stunk. How did you get this non stabilized Ironwood looking so good after buff? Ps. What buffing color do you use on wood?

  • @TyrellKnifeworks

    @TyrellKnifeworks

    2 жыл бұрын

    Ironwood has extremely tiny pores and it’s one of the hardest wood species on the planet. Plus it’s very oily. It’s one of the few species that does not stabilize well because of this, nor does it need it. I’ve been successful buffing Pauduk and other species as well. Just use some acetone after the buffing compound (I use white) then use a clean wheel to shine it. 👍. Thanks for watching

    How come you remove the tang and drill it separately when drilling the pin hole?

  • @TyrellKnifeworks

    @TyrellKnifeworks

    2 жыл бұрын

    If you try to drill through the tang with it inserted, you sometimes flex the drill bit and affects the hole in the handle material and it widens it. By removing the tang and drilling separately, that doesn’t happen. Thanks for watching

    Can you do a knife using CPM CruWear, CPM S110/125V, CPM 3V, or CPM 4V? I'd like to see somebody with more experience than myself compare the stuff to other common steels in a way other than a chart, and I think it would another interesting video or even video series in the future.

    Comparing mono-steels isn’t really my thing. I generally prefer Damascus or layered constructions. If it weren’t for my JS knives, I’d be doing Damascus builds right now. I do the occasional stainless build but they are typically kitchen knives. Thanks for watching.
