Making Music with CODE?! (With DJ_Dave and Sam Aaron)

Ойын-сауық

Why make music through coding instead of playing an instrument? Let's dive into why you should check out the Algorave scene with DJ_Dave, one of the first artists in America to use algorave in a pop context, and Sam Aaron, the creator of Sonic Pi, the software DJ_Dave uses.

    Are you telling me that someone decided to call this genre Algorave and not AlgoRYTHM?!!

  • @renzotorr537

    @renzotorr537

    2 жыл бұрын

    that's because it's not exactly a genre. we call algoraves the events in which we gather to livecode. seeing it as a genre it's something that started with the consumerist need of categorizing. livecoding is a tool, you can code any genre of music. anyway I'm not complaining about it I just wanted to inform y'all.

    rhythm and algorithm have very different roots etymologically, (live-)coders usually look down on people who conflate the two.

    Crazy that people find live coding entertaining. When I’m working (software engineer), I’m usually googling, breaking things, and having a panic attack for a couple of hours before writing 10 lines of code. 😅

    Basically nerdy novelty? Why would this be any more efficient than using Ableton live??

  • @IlVeroRe

    @IlVeroRe

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@22z83 Not about general efficiency, it's all about personal workflow and creative ideas. With coding you can sketch out a few lines to create a self-sufficient rhythmic or melodic pattern algorithm, and by changing single digits editing certain characteristics of it; you can then get very expressive with functions and create everchanging patterns while controlling their general direction. Or you can write other lines to add complexity (and suddenly remove them or replacing certain details by simply writing) or just whack it all up to generate ideas which you can then sample. Basically coding is a more hands-on and immediate way to do these things rather than fiddling around with Ableton or VSTs visual interfaces and clicking notes around. Horses for courses.
