Making Music on the Polyend Tracker // Is this workflow too weird for you?

Музыка

I've tried getting used to the ReNoise workflow for what feels like forever.. I couldn't do it! it was the weirdest DAW to me. But for whatever reason using the Polyend Tracker to make music fully standalone doesn't really feel like a DAW even though thats exactly what it is.. I think its just having my Tracker shortcuts right on the face of the unit vs hidden behind the QWERTY keyboard made all the difference for me.

Honestly using renoise on a laptop in a coffee shop kinda had that feeling all the time. I've been finding it hard to justify this over just a laptop with renoise since I can see how renoise is faster for a lot of this stuff, plus the vsts and other crazy abilities available. However this would be nice to just boot up and not worry about what problems windows or my sound driver might decide to have

Thanks for the video Ricky, I think you hit the nail on the head - the complexity, unpredictability and the fun! I switched to Renoise about 4 years ago and never looked back! Trackers take time to get a fluid workflow (I guess like anything) but once it clicks, it’s just crazy how powerful, interesting and fun making music becomes - especially on just a laptop and headphones. My advice to anyone is don’t try to make you’re usual stuff at first but instead experiment to learn the fx commands and general workflow then it will just click and you’ll have the power! I expect the Polyend tracker to be much the same but more immediate than Renoise, with added bonus of creative limitation, performance features, that fill mode and a radio! I'm so happy this thing exists, can’t wait for mine to arrive!

Man, this takes me back to my tracker days. I was a little late to the scene for the C64/128 and Amiga stuff (plus I never had an Amiga), but I was hardcore into modedit on the 386! This totally has that feel- and that crunchiness you're talking about is exactly how I remember those old .SAM and .VOC files. I watched a couple of your vids can’t remember which is the one you mentioned about the note data spilling into spare tracks when real-time recording. You can prevent this by just arming the one track you want info entered into by holding shift>rec. that way, sounds will just replace or choke what’s in there instead.

It's really cool that there are standalone hardware trackers now. In many ways, it's a big upgrade from software trackers. But in many ways, it's also a downgrade. It'd be really difficult to work with just 8 tracks, especially since they're monophonic and shared between samples and midi. I know there are tricks people can do to fit more notes into less space, but they're all just workarounds and aren't necessary when using other tools. More generally though, I've spent a lot of time using trackers, and although they're really nice in some ways, trackers are also a big part of why I stopped making music. It made music feel too much like work. I didn't get back into music until I found other tools and other workflows which suit me better. So I'm happy to see a new hardware tracker, but I have no plans to get one.

Can it warp samples like Ableton, or do you need to record them at the bpm you want to use them with?

So Ricky one question, I may have missed this. The tracker uses mono samples but my library is mostly 44.1 stereo, does it convert samples to mono on the fly as it imports them to a project or do you need to pre convert to mono?

  • 4 жыл бұрын

aikighost yes it does convert to mono while importing from sd

I keep eyeing this device. I'm still on the fence, but your video highlights some of the things that I like about it. Namely the fill workflow, as well as the random chance feature. FM radio is a nice touch, too. How is the build? When I heard the case is aluminum, I got excited. Does it seem like the kind of thing you can put in a backpack without worrying about every step you take? How about the big wheel? Cheers, keep doing your thing.

WHAT?! I've been tracking since I was 13yo and wondered if they'd ever make a hardware tracker I can use. This seems pretty powerful! I'll have to compare it to OpenMPT

Big fan, you’re an inspiration, and knowing that Tejada is an inspiration for you i know I’m the right place! Btw I’m still a beginner producer and thinking of going for the Novation Circuit, i dig the Dawless world, any thoughts?

This looks so dope. Just looked at their website but can’t seem to find is disk streaming is a thing. Do you know if there is any sample size and storage limitations

  • @ToyKeeper

    @ToyKeeper

It doesn't do disk streaming. Total sample size per song is limited to what will fit in RAM, which IIRC is about a couple minutes worth of sample data. Ricky mentions it at about 18:40.

My first impression on this: Lot of menue diving, which is my flow killer. This screen is big enough for graphic based UI and Touchscreen.

Glad we are blessed from the touchscreen! This thing builds upon muscle memory which requires tactile feedback on everything. A touchscreen cannot meet that requirement. By the way, there are tons of good trackers for the iPad if you want a great touchscreen experience.

I know these are super different, but since the OP-Z is another groove box at a similar price point, which would you choose if you had to?

Great Video as always! I think the Tracker of the Tracker is fairly cheap for all the functions. But on the other hand it seems very complex to me and not very much like jamming out with myself and the machine.

Whoa, I knew nothing about trackers before watching this - seems like a very engineery workflow. Definitely seems like trackers would make you think about music more.. logically? Awesome vid as always, Enrique!

Definitely! I used trackers for a very long time before moving over to the typical daws you see today. I like Ableton, but I don't click with certain things like I did a tracker. My workflow, no many how many tricks I learn, will never be as fast and fluid as it was on a tracker (Modplug Tracker was my weapon of choice). Maybe because I learned how to make music on them before I ever touched a real synth or professional recording software..?

The idea of having an entire DAW in a small sleek box like this is super appealing, but I also know from many previous attempts (and watching this video) that I _do not_ get along with the tracker workflow. If they could figure out a way to cram Live into this form factor, I'd be so happy.
