Making mold boxes for resin cast · Creating a doll · My Studio diary

Hi! I am visual artist from Ukraine and my current big project is a series of Ball-jointed Dolls (BJD). I wanted to share some parts of the process with you.
For a year and a half I’ve been working on a doll master model itself and now I am prepearing to resin cast. But first I need to make silicone molds for each part of the doll. So I invite you to join me in assembling the mold boxes for the liquid silicone.
The next video will be pouring the silicone, it’s complex but quite relaxing process, so stay tuned.
The material used for sticking the doll parts is just a regular sculpting clay. For the doll I’ve being using LaDoll Premier.
For silicone molds and resin cast I am planning to use Smooth-on products.

Hello! Thank you for this video. I know it's a bit older. I am interested in making molds and I saw someone melt the clay and pour it in to the bottom of the mold box. Do you think that would work with doll parts as well or is it better to just form it the way you have done here? Thanks!

Hi! Ladoll (that I am using for sculpting) can’t be melted. I know only about monster clay that can be melted and poured, I guess it can work. But it’s used only for master model, it doesn’t last long.. as I know for the ‘final’ doll the resin is the only option (if we’re talking about silicone molds)

Wait I’m confused. How did the doll became grey from the initial clay sculpting? I’m new to bid sculpting and I’m almost done with my doll but the next step before creating the silicone mold is confusing to me. How do I get my clay sculpted doll from not falling apart when I pour mold on it? Also what kind of clay is that one that you buried the parts inside the green box?

Hi! The doll should be covered carefully with the primer before moldmaking, otherwise the silicone will not cure! Primer also adds a bit of strength to the doll parts..
