    Sincere question for anyone that can answer. Craftsmangus said to another commenter that .8mm leather was used on the pockets and 1.2mm is used on the back. My question is, are these different thicknesses coming from the same hid or is a different hide used for the back of the wallet and a different hide used for the pockets. Or is the same hide used and the leather thinned for the pockets ORRRR is the hide measured for variations in the thickness and the thin .8mm portion used for pockets and the thicker part 1.2mm used for the back? What is the practice when making wallets?

  • @BradyBegeman

    @BradyBegeman

    5 жыл бұрын

    It can be from the same hide or not. All of this leather has been “split” at some point to its current thickness, as no natural cowhide is going to be only 1.2 mm thick. Splitting is done on a big machine not unlike a planer for wood, but it’s likely that Gus is buying the leather already split as such machines are vastly expensive.

  • @craftsmangus

    Most of the time I punch half weight (most of the time I use slanted European style pricking iron). But as in this video for that part you've seen I punch on the top layer but the second layer I awl again. Main idea is to make the small wound as possible. (the stitch in the back side are different). Just my personal preference. From people around me don't like to make this. I'm quite like to work slow.
