Making laughing gas

Ғылым және технология

For this video, I am going to be making some laughing gas, aka nitrous oxide. Then, I'll be using it to carry out the classic Barking Dog experiment. To make it, I'll be using the safer method, which uses sodium nitrite and hydroxylamine hydrochloride. The typical industrial process, using ammonium nitrate, can be quite dangerous.
This video has been a long time coming and I am glad that I could finally release it. I have been promising people this forever!

I had spinal surgery for my scoliosis recently, and they used laughing gas to put me under. It was probably the closest to recreational drugs I’ve ever come. Like I turned my head to the right, then back to face forward, and the left half of my field of vision didn’t come back. Then every started to warp and before I knew it the surgery was over. 10/10 can totally see why people use it recreationally

I’m a chemist and love watching Nile explain reactions. He does it very thoroughly. The downside of being a chemist is that non-chemists ask 1 of 2 questions. Can I make illicit substances and/or can I make booms. Those are dumb questions that get old after years so I just tell them I’m not that good of a chemist.

This is an excellent reaction to demonstrate the complex and perplexing redox chemistry of nitrogen compounds. Note that decomposition of ammonium nitrate is thermodynamically favoured, but not kinetically favoured, because measurably decomposes only with strong heating, but the exothermy shows the reaction is spontaneous. This is also due to mild acidity and reducing properties of ammonium. Sodium nitrate does not decompose like that. Instead in only partially and reversibly decomposes to nitrite, yet nitrites are more reactive than nitrates (ammonium nitrite notably decomposes at room temperature and explodes even on mild heating). While nitrates form nitric acid, nitrites don't even exist in acidic solution except as the unstable and reactive nitrous acid (compare with sulfurous and carbonic acids), which cannot be isolated and can be kept only for a while in cold solution. So contrary to popular belief, inorganic nitrates are fairly inert and both the reduction potential and reaction rate depend on pH, which both also depend on temperature. I guess the cooling is needed not only to avoid thermal runaway, but also to keep the unstable intermediates in solution (hydroxylamine, hydrazine, dinitrogen trioxide etc.). Note that nitrogen itself is relatively strong oxidizing agent (E0 = ~1 V) yet it is normally so inert it can often replace argon in lab experiments (and so is nitrous oxide - this is why it's used as a propulsion gas for whipped cream in place of carbon dioxide, which is acidic and thus too reactive toward fats). It would be great to demonstrate the redox couples and potentials involved in this reaction as well as conditions (namely pH) required to obtain nitrous oxide as a product (rather than nitrogen or its higher oxides). The rich chemistry of nitrogen is utilized by bacteria and this is why nitrates and nitrites occur in nature (see nitrification, nitritation, denitrification, annamox, connamox). Some bacteria oxidize ammonia to nitrogen in presence of nitrate - the oxidation of ammonia takes energy, but the reduction of nitrate produces even more energy, making the whole process net positive. Although the final product is nitrogen, it is believed that hydroxylamine is an intermediate in such metabolic process.

Carbon disulphide is a real pain if you need to use it as a solvent in a reaction, unless the reaction vessel is sealed. You do it in a fume cupboard, of course, but the stuff has such a low flash point that you can still ignite the vapour if you're using a magnetic stirrer (well, an old-fashioned one from 40 years ago anyway!), and once it's lit, you have quite a job to put it out again. Cover the beaker and it goes out, but remove the cover too soon and it almost immediately lights again, the walls of the beaker are warm enough to ignite it once any oxygen gets in there. It's much worse than diethyl ether (yes, I've seen an ether fire as well).

Drakkar Calethiel The explosion looked so hot... It's just yellow, and red... Gives me the chills, in a bad way. Absolutely terrible.

BlackFish I've watched a couple of videos from the explosion. The first one was bad but the second one is just hell on earth. People literally filmed their last seconds, if you think about it, just terrible!

Agreed. Some of the footage is unsettlingly close to ground zero.
