One of my hobbies is making sturdy shoes. Everything is handmade. The shoe is double stitched. This video is meant to share as much knowledge and information about shoe making as possible. Of course it is also just entertainment.

    How to learn this art?

  • @andiswerkstatt-ow4uw

Thank you for your answer! First I watched about 50 youtube videos and just started making shoes. The first few pairs were not usable. Almost every video had something I could learn. In addition, in the early days an orthopaedist showed me the worst mistakes in making shoes. Working as a carpenter helps with precision. And the most important thing is enthusiasm, patience and perseverance.

Thanks for your precious reply! I think that could be a great thing for community to make a playlist about your learning path, trials and errors, design, measurements, common mistakes, etc... You could earn some money too, you deserve it.

My jaw dropped, how much respect I have for this profession. Truly a master. This video is for those who ask: why do handmade shoes cost so much? Here is the answer. I really enjoyed watching this video.

  • @TheGecko26

Handmade shoes cost so much for two reasons. First, they are unique pieces. Each pair of boots are like no other, generally they're made by the hands of a skilled craftsman. Second, it takes time for the craftsman to learn and develop that skill. As for most professions, it takes about 10 years to truly become a master.

@@TheGecko26unfortunately here in Croatia they're anything but skilled masters. Most of them inherited the workshop from their fathers and grandfathers and are trying to use the "heritage" as marketing. They typically charge 2-300€ for shoes made out of questionable leather and a glued on sole instead of Goodyear welt. You can get such shoes for 40€ in Deichmann, they'll last and wear the same. There's exactly one shoemaker left that knows what he's doing. Sad, as Zagreb used to be the town of a thousand craftsmen.

This is unbelievable. I've watched you make a water tight wooden bucket with no glue or metal fixturing, a composite bow from animal sinew, wood, and a water buffalo horn, and now a hand made pair of boots? Crazy skills. I watched this one last and the whole time was telling myself, "If he casts the treaded part of the boot himself I'm going to lose my mind." You saved my mind, but it wouldn't have surprised me if you had cast it. You have an amazing array of high craftsmanship skills like nothing I've ever seen.

Awesome. When I first came to this country decades ago, my dad took me to a cobbler to have a pair of leather boots made. Back then, we had tailors, cobblers, people who made travel bags. They are all gone now replaced by department stores like everywhere else. The boots needed almost no break-in as they were custom made to the shape of my feet. Sadly I no longer have the boots but I remember the cobbler telling me to bring them back if I ever had any problems with them. I was too young to appreciate his skills then. But with the years and watching you create those molds, and making the boots from them, I am just in awe. Bravo!

Well this type of work has an advantage compared to industrial products. They focus on big numbers and reduced costs,so they skimp on materials and construction as much as they can. A handmade boot will last 10 times longer than an industrial one since the construction in sturdier, more durable and the material are better, plus it can be repaired, resoled, even stretched or resized if you can find a skilled cobbler. This is way better than industrial shoes, but the price is generally very high, and rightly so
