Agreed. Paulette Goddard would have played a fine Scarlett, but Vivien Leigh truly WAS Scarlett. She doesn't even seem to be acting as she brings Scarlett to life. She truly seems to have been born to play this role.

I think the more atrocious thing about the salaries is that Hattie McDaniel only got $6,000 about while everyone else was getting $20,000 minimum! Unfortunately, for the time period, even having an African American on screen was huge. Nevertheless, it's sad she wasn't paid what she deserved for her performance.

If anything, Vivien Leigh should have gotten paid way more, as for Hattie, her time on the screen wasn't that long, so I think she really did well. I am curious how much manny got paid. I find her role really important and she played it very well, I should say better than Hattie McDaniel.

I thought it is ridiculous how much Vivien Leigh was being paid vs Leslie Howard for such a pivotal role that had 10X of the screen time of Leslie Howards' until I saw Hattie McDaniel's salary. It's OUTRAGEOUS that Hattie McDaniel received only 1/5 of how much Vivien Leigh was being paid and still the state of Georgia had to ban her from attending the Premier of the movie in Atlanta due to the segregation law. And to think after all those against her, Hattie McDaniel still delivered one of the most poignant, dignified and moving Oscar acceptance speech. Remarkable woman!!

But have read, more then once, that Selznick paid little attention to the portrayal of Blacks in his movie-- referring to a belief of--'why should he when the Country as a whole doesn't, that it isn't his job to do so..' and that he purposely altered the worlds of other Scripts writers like Hecht, that did give a more truer and realistic aspect of blacks in that time period...He felt, they 'WERE' essential to giving 'comic' relief in the pictures more darker moments.

No doubt Butterfly McQueen received less, but she also had much less screen time and this was her first film.

HCShannon yes. Two shysters claimed they were talent scouts for GWTW. .and bedded many girls. Two of the girls went to court. They won their claim and got to play small parts in the movie. They remain unnamed, but one of them went on to have a minor career. It has always been assumed that it was Margorie Reynolds, who went on to play opposite Bing Crosby in Holiday Inn. Her part in GWTW was reduced to a shadow on the wall at twelve oaks. The other was the character of Maybelle Merewether, who had nearly all of her role cut out. Joan Bennett's acting in this scene is absolutely ridiculous !! It's a pity because she matches Scarlett's look. On the contrary, Jean Arthur's acting is way more adequate but she's not the southern brunette she should play. Paulette Goddard was talented indeed but too much forced to be seductive and malicious. She looked and sounded like a grown-up woman, far from being a rich girl in the 19th century. She would have been fine for the second part of the movie but Vivien was able to portray the young and the mature Scarlett.

Read the book, twice. Have seen the movie a dozen times. BUT, " a woman's Libber"??!: the character of Miss Scarlet, at any level; is, as if Miss Mitchell in some Freudian way--wrote, showed her to be just a vain, stupid self-centered manipulative woman with a damn good figure. Hell, Scarlet would have sold her 'slaves' if it meant a new Ball Gown, or paying the taxes on Tara. I just can't stand this particular character. One gets the distinct feeling that the picture, the portrayal of Scarlet is MORE of Selznick's psychological secret desire of what a 'pure, Southern Woman' should be; than in any actuality.

That's true. In the thirties, Clark Gable was one of, if not the biggest, movie star in the world. He was so popular, he was paired with all the top leading ladies of the era: Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow, Myrna Loy, Norma Shearer, Greta Garbo, Carole Lombard, the list goes on and on. MGM didn't want to let Gable do GWTH, but Selznick was determined to get him. Of course, his salary would've been the biggest, he was the King of Hollywood, and deservedly so. Vivien Leigh was a British actress, known almost to no one in the U.S., so that's the reason she didn't get as much. I don't understand why Leslie Howard got a lot, especially since he wasn't the star player he once, he was "box office poison" in the late thirties to many.
