I get asked about the moisture content of my sand. I have settled on a ratio of about 2 liters of sand and 36-42ish ml of water for my ratio. I start with sand that is dry.

    That is a beautiful finish you are getting in that sand. You make it look easy. I know this is due to your experience and learning over time and some super fine sand. I tried to make Petrosand molds today. Three times and they all cave in when I took hammerhead I was trying to mold out. I want a brass hammer in the shape of a ball pein but it is easier said than done. The eye of the hammer will not stay in the mold, it comes out with the hammer every time. I figured it would be an easy first casting project, but not as easy as it looks... I think I will make a tamping rod instead. Seems like it would be less complicated. What do you suppose would be a good weight for a tool like that. I have tried using a two-pound hammer lightly tapping the sand down. In the tight spots, I use a 5/8 inch bolt with the threads cut off. It is flat on one end and rounded head on the other... Seems like about a pound in weight.. feels about right... Anyhow, just wanted to say, I love your videos. I have a great deal to learn and your videos are very informative... Thank you for being so kind as to make them for us wannabes...

    Keep trying with the hammers. I expect when you say "The eye of the hammer will not stay in the mold, it comes out with the hammer every time" that you're not using a core. Great job Perry. I wonder if the back spruces filling first was more because of inertia than pressure.

  • @swdweeb

    @swdweeb

    2 жыл бұрын

    You could be right. Remember, I'm a mere software puke and not a real engineer so I know little about pressure inside these systems. I guess the pressure is likely to be pretty constant inside and so inertia might be the culprit. I'm actually going to see a "real" engineer tonight, I'll ask him.

    @@swdweeb I used to cut parallel or straight sprues but always used a tapered runner below. Not in width but in depth. The runner would start off deep as the volume at entry from the sprue then incline to a shallow stream prior to gate which worked quite well. It's just fast to cut the tapered sprue though

    Those sprues came out great , but I noticed you cast round sprues with a square sprue , is there a difference in what you use ?

  • @swdweeb

    @swdweeb

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good eye. In terms of delivering metal to the runner, there really isn't any significant difference. Both were tapered at the same angle. The round sprues can be twisted just prior to removing the from the mold. This makes for a nice wobble-free release. The square sprues have to be pulled straight up to maintain the integrity of the sprue. Wobbling it would distort the sprue. I made a square one because I can more easily print square ones and I needed a taller sprue to make sure I'd be above the tops of the poured ones. I.e. I needed a longer one longer than the sprues I cast.

    Thanks for the on going videos and reports of your experience. When I'm out and about, and see sand, I check it out. At Menard's I found sand for leveling patio blocks and bought a bag to mix into a project. I found it very, very fine compared to play sand and 40 pounds were less than $5 U.S. It may have been a hick-up, but I thought you would want to know about my experience.

  • @swdweeb

    @swdweeb

    Hey Don, that sounds about right for the price of sand at a big box store. Play sand is insanely coarse and you will have to sift about half of it out to get down to just the fines. I looked at the paver sand thinking I'd have to get rid of less of it than play sand but then I found the sand I'm using. It's more expensive than $5 per 40 but not significantly and I can use it without any sort of screening.
