Making Fishing Lures, Making a Topwater Fishing Lure, IT JUMPS!

In this video we are making a fishing lure, a unique topwater lure that jumps. If this lure works, it should be deadly in both saltwater and freshwater. We'll go through the whole design, build and testing. #MAKINGLURES #LURECARVING

    Franco....that design could be thrown into pods of bunker (Menhaden) when they are being harassed from under by stripers and bluefish in the north east salt......Excellent design!

    Hi, Franco. I have to admit that I was skeptical about this design, but your water-level slo-mo footage of several retrieves instantly made me a believer. I agree with other commenters that you have NAILED the look of a fleeing baitfish with a predator close on its "heels." One question: Does the "indent" behind the head of this bait (the shape that put you on the edge of "propriety") play a specific role in the action of the lure? If you didn't see one in your testing, maybe it could be eliminated? Best, Chris

    I seen a bunch of Jdm lures. They got something very similar. They got a cool "bottom bouncer" lure that is just a weight metal "sub" looking jig. Works actually great. Lots of top water stuff we should have made here.

    I would like to see you take that same design and reposition the lead eye to the bottom of the lip, and shift the weight forward just a bit. I think the lip would engage more water for lift, and the pull from the bottom would have a tendency to enhance the lift from the tail. Just a thought. Another idea I have for a jumping lure is to use the minnow form and add "wings" to it where the gills would be, at a 45 degree angle with a low pull point. I suspect it might have a jump when jerked, and a topwater skittle/wobble when on steady retrieve. I think your stuff is great. This is my first video of yours. I subbed immediately. Great work and presentation.

    Paint will make the lure marketable but try some natural wood I think you'll be surprised. I've made some lures and taken em to the dock for tuning and detuning depending on what I wanted them to do. This was with just sealer, some actually did better before airbrushing. Old wooden lures did really well as the paint wore off so there might be something to that. Nothing beats catching fish on a lure you made.

    That could represent mullet that love leaping out of the water. If you moved the tie on eye down, relative to the center line, would the force push downward more? So that the result is the lure shooting up out of the water at a more vertical angle.

  • @EngineeredAngler

    @EngineeredAngler

    2 жыл бұрын

    lowering the tie eye would result in a more upward force. The lure would tend to skitter more than jump.

    Hi Matthew. Back in the 1980's I entered a homemade lure in a Luhr Jensen lure making contest the used to have. I called it a Skip Bait because, on a steady retrieve it would literally leap out of the water and then dig in on reentry, then leap, etc. The body was thin balsa covered in Pearl Mylar tube but what made it work was clear acetate sheet cut in a tear drop pattern epoxied to the top of the body in a concave configuration for the total length of the lure. The eye for the line attachment was above the lure. Anyway, I only mention all this because your question reminded me of it and I thought it might reassure you that you idea is very viable. No, I didn't win the lure making contest but they kept the lures I submitted. Three, each a different size. PS-Many thanks to Franco for an outstanding lure making series. It certainly has helped me on many occasions. Cheers ALL!

    Wow for real that simple, been wondering cause that was my ext item I was going to start researching was where to put the weights, I have 6 baits shapes I wanted to make really outside the box. I’ve had 3 of them fir over 8 years tucked away in my shop. Went and dug them out, got to go tomorrow abs buy a dry erase board & make me some of those stick on pins. So is that your go to method for every lure you build? As far as finding the weight placement, or is this only fur top water baits? En wondering how to find weight placement in say a rattle trap type bait or just make my rattle chamber where area allows. This prob only for top water come to thinking about it. Thanks for showing secrets. I one else would show it really helps Later SQ

    The hanging method works great for lures where your main focus is float or suspension angle, so topwater, twitch bait, swim baits. If you're depending on the weight to help with the action...this might not work. Cheers.

    Only about 5 minutes in and I have a question. Won't it benefit a little more from having the tie-on eye at the bottom of the 45 degree face which would cause a little more upward pull?

    If you are trying to pull it out of the water then yes. I wanted the shape of the lure body to create the upward momentum.

    OK. I'm addicted to your channel after two videos! I have a question: I live in Thailand and my main sport fish is giant snakehead. They have lots of big teeth and a jaw like a vise. They shred many lures pretty quickly. Wood lures get lots of puncture holes through any finish a d the weed gets wet and rots. Ay ideas on how to treat wood to keep it from getting so many tooth punctures, or, conversely, stop the wood from wet rot?

    Soaking the wood with very thin super glue (CA glue) before you paint, will harden the wood and seal it. Then, some extra clear coats at the end will help too. Have fun.

    Just curious, why the concave back versus a convex one? Does it matter in creating "air time" for the lure?

  • @EngineeredAngler

    @EngineeredAngler

    Yes..it forces the head up when you pull.

    Thank you so much for responding so quickly Franco. I'm having a senior moment trying to understand this. Would you be willing to elaborate on the forces that cause this to happen? Don't mean to be the dunce in the room, but I can't see how a convex shaped back, or concave one for that matter, has any influence on the motion of the lure's head. Rather the area pushing water at the head seems to me the key to forcing the head up and out of the water, regardless of the backs configuration. What am I missing? Also, thanks so much for all you are willing to share. Yours is the absolute best site for lure design and construction by far than anything else I've seen. I really enjoy the scientific approach! Cheers!@@EngineeredAngler

    I keep thinking that if this bait suspended in more of a nose-down attitude (instead of tail down) that it would leap higher and more cleanly out of the water.

  • @EngineeredAngler

    @EngineeredAngler

    Try it....but it won't work. A bit more scoop in the tail gives a better jump. The video really doesn't do it justice; it actually jumps nicely when it's out away from the boat.

    @@EngineeredAngler , by "tail down / nose down" I meant the suspension attitude - not the shape. Same shape but if it suspended when still in the water with the nose down it would give the curve of the lure a lot more water to get traction in the water when it's twitched to curve upward and leap beyond the water surface. I'm interested what the walking the dog action would be with a nose heavy version of the same lure. I love the out of the box thinking on this design. I hope to start tinkering with 3D printed similar versions.
