Minor problem while you'll get the design right, the strokes wont be. Sign your name quickly on a piece of paper, then look very closely at the "y" in your name. You'll notice that it likely trails off at the end. A pantograph wont easily replicate that whispyness

Well, that's a plastic version of the pantograph. It's a little on the "suck side" because of materials and poor construction (joints tolerances and such), also leverage is a factor inducing twists and bends in plastic sets. I think you should try proportional dividers too, very simple tool more in the "artistic side".

I had to watch this as I was given one of these as a kid (I’m now 49) and I have used it to create the initial line work using a pencil when doing drawings from photos (4”x6”). I always hold the needle and allow the weight of the pencil to create that line work. I then complete the drawing with other mediums (pencil, pen, paint etc). It just allows me to ensure that my proportions are correct. Thanks for the video.

I can definitely see some design improvements that would make this a super cool gadget. Use metal bracers for stability. Add a clear section where the pin is so you can easily see exactly where the needle is. Potentially have a small weight that you place around the drawing instrument. And probably make the needle a ball point. I feel like that would make for a smoother, effortless experience where you could focus on tracing and not manipulating the tool.

It was much less plastic than this one (start of the 90s) and had a graphite bit included, but every time I tried it my drawings had no proportions! It worked well only when you pressed hard a d held everything down... and went back to correct after lol. Still helped gettin the idea of it for people with no artitude.

Jazza! You should bring back character design sessions. Its a great way to have more content during the covid-19 season and you dont have to dig up old treasures to make a video. Just a thought

After watching this I’m super tempted to grab myself one of these. Maybe not for the detailed bits but in Uni a lot of the art projects are on massive paper and it can be hard to translate the proportions to a larger size without sketching a ton which can mess with the finish. So either I sketch less and risk having my thumbnail’s proportion off or work it until it’s all good and risk having non erasable bits after inking. But this would mean I could get the perfect proportions at a more comfy size where I don’t care about it’s refinement and then transfer the key points of the drawings onto the final page. I have a MIGHTY NEED.

I cant believe it. I've had a thing like this when I was a child. Which was like.... more than 20 years ago and the thing was already old. My mum and me used to enlarge pictures from coloring books, taped them to my bedroom windows and painted my windows this way. Feeling SO MUCH nostalgia rn. I'm from Germany btw. x3

"Jazza tries enlargement for a month! You wont believe the results!" But seriously.... that could be a fun challenge, draw a regular sized picture and see how many times you can enlarge it with home-made pantographs. I can imagine it going from a4 sketch all the way up to an art-attack style room sized drawing
