Making costume hooves, fit for a faun

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is my third attempt in making a set of hooves. They made from my favorite pair of comfortable wedge sandals, and are very durable.
materials used:
wire screening(used for screening windows)
clay to temperarily hold wire in place
paper mache' with wallpaper paste
car bondo
filler primer
acrylic paint
krylon satin finish clearcoat
fur
I'd like to dedicate this vid to the members of the 'hooves' yahoo newsgroup. You guys have been very inspiring and gave me the knowledge to design and make my own. thanks!

    Finally! The first tutorial I find where i can ACTUALLY wear the shoes! I can barely walk on heels so i could not imagine myself standing all day and walking around a convention just on my toes. Thank you so much for this video idea that I'm surely gonna use. x3

    TIP: If they don't do this already. I'd suggest gluing some aluminum on the bottom of the hooves to add the clopping sounds that hooves usually make. You don't have to do it. Just a suggestion.

    OH MY GOD THANK YOU FOR THIS! This AMAZING video looks so much easier (and comfortable) than the route I was originally going with. I can't do anything where I have to stand on something that has the height of a stilleto because, frankly, my ankles are too weak for it. And the route I was going with, well... *looks over at the hunks of wood and metal pipes* Thank you so much for this!

    I just finished mine but I didn't use Bondo, my husband and son said this is not the way to go or it will crack and break apart. We did the wire mesh and papermache' base, then overlayed fiberglass matt cloth and then fiberglass resin, another layer of mesh and two to three more layers of resin. we used a grinder for the super rough spots, and finished smoothing with a power sander. Came out VERY durable and very LIGHTWEIGHT.

    I really like this tutorial. I used it for my renaissance festival costume this year, and they looked great - the costume was a huge hit. Unfortunately, they were cracked and chipped within a few hours. I recently re-did them using the same screen base, only I covered it with Rigid Wrap plaster gauze, including most of the bottom. I filler primer'd the heck outta the whole thing, painted, and thoroughly glazed them (especially the bottom). So far, they seem to be holding out very well.

    for all those asking (hoofbeatstabel108 and mrfnk etc) fur is easy to get from websites like distinctivefabrics, crscrafts, and even some fabric stores (hobby lobby SOMETIMES has decent fur... sometimes) but buying online is great, just make sure to get swatches first.

    @lion0121 when i started my new ones i traced a horseshoe onto some wood, cut it, and screwed it to the bottom-this way the bottom will already be fitted to attach a shoe later. if the bondo touches the ground, it'll chip and crack anyway. i'm not using bondo anymore, but when you put the screen around the wood, you'll end up with a gap between the shoe and the screen. I'd suggest you fill it with 'greatstuff' expanding foam so it won't be to flimsy for the bondo.

    cut out a chunk but leave enough to stand on, its personal preference really. the back of the heel is hidden with fur. the pencils were stuck in there while the paper mache was still wet, so when it dries it wouldn't curl inward, then they were removed. hope that helps ;)

    I'll be taking a similar approach to this this year. I'll be using the door screen, but I'll be just drenching it in Leak Seal. It's enough to "solidify" the hooves and it'll keep flexibility so it won't break. It ought to be good enough, considering my first attempt of using shitty Crayola molding broke before I even got in the damn gate.

    @succubusbunny I think its for shape. Hooves are pretty short and small. If you made a hoof the length of your foot it would look odd, so cutting some of the shoes heel off give the illusion of shorter feet. It is basically making a stilt out of the shoes, rather than a complicated wooden construction project.

  • @pattasy
    @pattasy15 жыл бұрын

    I'm sure i could figure it out, but right off the top of my head, no. well, i guess you could carve it out of foam (like the stuff used for chair cushions) and then cover with fur. If i ever decide to make my cat paws, i'll be sure to post for inspiration. :)

  • @pattasy
    @pattasy15 жыл бұрын

    you are very welcome, you might want to cut up an oversize flipflop or wood and glue it to the bottom to elevate it some. I noticed that the bondo along the bottom edge started to chip because it came in direct contact with the pavement. :) good luck! send a pic my way i would love to see :)
