As a senior on fixed income, I second this reply! Thank you Helen, I am finding that many little tidbits of things that you have said pop into my mind during the day when I am at the art table. Your teachings have completely changed my approach to art. I used to sit down and try to “make something”. Now I mostly experiment and have tons of things scattered about in various stages of drying. This is a new step for me, and wow am I seeing results - mostly because as you have repeated so often, I’m using everything as a springboard and learning what I love. You are a wonderful artist and teacher, and I’m very grateful for you.

​@@HelenWellsArtistWhew! What an action packed fun hour that was. More like 4 hours for me as I wrote notes, gathered objects, played with sketches and materials. It was fun and it was work. I feel happily exhausted 😂😴. The good thing is that we can keep going and building on skills using the same exercises. I love watercolor and mark making. I fill my journals. I am inspired by our Polynesian culture, my home country New Zealand and beautiful tropical Australia where we now live. Never short of inspiration. There's so much unique plants, flowers, animals and culture.

The shapes came alive on the darker background! I'm getting out the magazines! I will sign up for your new class Helen but will have to wait until the end of September. Enjoy your week! 😊

Thanks, Helen, another good video. I love experimenting with collage like this and as you have shown, choice of background makes all the difference to how well it works. I don't know if it would work for everyone but I store all my papers, by colour, in filing pockets in a couple of big ring binders. They are easy to access and help to keep my desk tidy! It also reminds me when it may be time to stop saving anything new! Time to go and make some collage art now!

An absolutely delightful whimsical idea! My collages are quite 'heady'... surreal, for sure... and most are very complicated, with 'messages'. To be able to stop, breathe, and so something like what you have shown, would be like a breath of fresh air. I'm going to give it a go... a relaxation of sorts... a pause. I have all these gel plate prints and roll-off pages from the brayer... they would make excellent backgrounds, as you have shown. Plus, there are SOOOOO many images, colors, patterns, shapes in the THOUSANDS of magazines and books that I've accrued that are just sitting there with no useful purpose. You have shown Me a purpose for so much more... no waste... I keep EVERY mag. & book after I've cut them up. LOL Thank you SO much for this idea and have a LOVELY day! (:

What a different approach to collaging. So very calm and relaxed. Not surreal and not representational, I have actually been doing some pieces like this recently. Mine are busier and fully covering the paper, but like yours, they are more based on color and texture and overall feeling than anything else. This was really very helpful. Thank you so much. Oh how lovely.... excellent prompt I usually add a music credit and completely forgot this time - I have now - it is a song called Don't Give up on Love by a band called Ludlow...licensed for use via Epidemic Sound

Oooh! How relaxing this video felt! With the seagulls, music, and subject matter. I went through a whole collage mood last year and loved it! I did get a bit overwhelmed with bits of paper though, so I need to be a bit more organised, haha! I popped over to sign up for the class, and didn't realise you had a book out. I bought that, forgetting to sign up altogether so I will go and do that now! :) P.S I like the contrasty collage on the right, with the purple background...just saying! x

Welcome Back Helen!! I LOVE what you're doing with the magazine collages! I have tons of magazines that I've collected over the years, but I always seem to get wrinkles when I've tried to glue them down. What kind of adhesive do you use?

Hello hello! So a glue stick will cause less wrinkles as it’s less wet or if you are using a wetter glue smoothing over the piece gently with the edge of a credit card to get rid of wrinkles or if they are really bothersome and you want your piece to be neat I sometimes paint a layer of medium on the back of a piece of collage and let it try and then stick it down…I have not actually tried this with magazine pieces but with other paper and it works…

I have been having so much fun with magazine collages, I still need to try with copies of my own marks

I love this exercise Helen! I also love how you create unusual shapes with each cut out! Collage was never my strong point (especially when expected to come up with ideas in art classes! It is a slow process that cannot be hurried!) However, I experimented with collage recently and enjoyed it more this time round. (Question for you Helen: are you classes on-going or seasonal?)

This video really speaks to me. I have saved lots of images (torn out pages) from magazines which I haven’t used in quite some time so as I played your video I opened my cabinet and pulled out some pages. It’s interesting because your images were very much like mine but what happened is that I got overwhelmed because I have sooo much. I used to make cards with collage and envelopes I’d mail the card in. I know I need to categorize these which would make this easier but how do I keep from getting overwhelmed?

Well I think I might give myself a parameter or bounding-box to work within. Sometimes restricting ourselves can help with overwhelm. Such as ‘I’m only going to use five pieces of collage’ or I’m only going to use blue or I’m going to give myself a time deadline of five minutes..or I’m going to make five pieces in one hour…sometimes restricting ourselves can help with this x

Do you realize both compositions are off set circles with dark centers.
