Funny you just released this video. My shoes started to stink over the last couple of weeks so I had to clean them. I went for a slightly longer process though. Hand wash with warm water and a soft brush. That god rid of any actual dirt. Then I used a cleaning gel. After that, I just sprayed them with a footwear odour eliminator to make them smell nice, rather than just clean.

Congrats on getting sponsors for your videos! I have no problem watching sponsored videos, because I understand that it is how KZreadrs are supported monetarily. However, just in the future, I would prefer to have the sponsorship stated outright at the start (many KZreadrs will say "This video is sponsored by..." at the beginning or put #ad in the title). Since I don't check the description box until the end of the video, I was surprised by this video's sponsorship and it was a bit off-putting. Stating the sponsorship in a more obvious manner will make me more likely to watch the video, because I gain a sense of trust and transparency from the creator. Good luck and keep making awesome videos; I love your content!

Thanks a lot for your support and feedback. However, I don't understand why there's a trust problem if I don't state the sponsorship outright. If I promoted a crappy product that didn't even work for me only for the purpose of getting paid, then I would understand why there could be a trust problem. Otherwise, I feel it's a win-win situation. You get to discover an amazing product verified by me, and I get compensated so I can continue to make free videos for you guys. Can you elaborate more on why you find it off-putting?

  • @authorjuli

@@GeekClimber Sure thing! I will do my best to explain - I apologize for the long response in my attempt to be thorough. TLDR: sponsorship introduces potential bias towards a product not otherwise present in unsponsored videos, thus creating a feeling of mistrust if not addressed outright (google: "funding bias"). A product sponsorship is an advertisement, where a person has been offered money to review and recommend a product. This introduces potential bias, even if the sponsor loves and verifies the product and even if he rejected other sponsorships because the products were not as good. Unfortunately, the audience is in a position where they have to assume there is a possible bias in favor of the product because of the sponsorship and may feel “tricked” if not informed outright. Of course, I trust your recommendations and know you offer these products honestly, but when I make a decision to purchase a product, I like to research alternatives, see how the product compares to others, and know as much about the product and seller before deciding to buy. In video terms, this means I like to know if it was sponsored or not sponsored. I feel MUCH better knowing about a sponsorship than not knowing, because I can then recognize that the sponsor took the time to look into the product thoroughly AND communicate this information to me by stating it outright. I will trust a creator more when they are open and honest about the sponsorship and more likely to consider the product, because I can more forward and actually listen to the review of the product instead of wondering about potential bias. An outside example that can apply here: In research studies, participants fill out an informed consent, where they are made aware of all the possible risks and benefits prior to the study. In addition, researchers must present any potential biases in the data, sampling pool, procedures etc., as well as present counterarguments and other reasonings to explain findings in the final paper. If the research is funded by an industry partner, researchers must also recognize this as a potential conflict of interest. This doesn’t make the research any less valid, but by presenting this information, it allows readers to draw accurate, informed conclusions. Here’s how some creators incorporate their sponsorships and maintain trust and transparency: 1. Including it in a video, but not making it the emphasis or main topic. (You did this very well already! With the foam roller in the Lower Back Pain video) 2. Outright stating the sponsorship in multiple ways to accommodate for variety in how people may interact with your content (in the video itself, in the description, title etc.) 3. In videos where the product is the main purpose (like this one), presenting it in a way that is more objective (This was addressed in another comment). If you haven't already, I suggest watching other content creators and seeing how they do product placements. While I don’t think there is any “official” protocol, it is clear that there tends to be standards other content creators follow successfully. If you made it this far, thanks for reading and I hope I explained myself clearly. Keep doing what you do! I’m happy that you are open and willing to interact with your audience. Good luck! :)

Thanks for the long and detailed explanation! In my opinion, if the audience is in a position where they have to assume there is a possible bias in favor of the product, that simply means there isn't enough trust between the creator and the audience. The original intention of not including a 15~30-second sponsorship declaration in the start is really simple. I didn't want to waste 15~30 seconds of the audience's time. I always try to keep my video short and to the point. I thought I earned most of my viewers' trust, but I guess I haven't. Lesson learned for me. I will have a sponsorship declaration if I get a second one in the future.

@@GeekClimber I understand your view point about trust. I think you have a lot of loyal viewers who trust you, but now since your audience is growing, you will always have new viewers on any given video to gain trust. Just for an example, I think Linus Tech Tips does a great job as a review channel that gets a lot of sponsorships. Thanks again for listening! Many people would not, and I respect you for taking the time to do so. I always get excited when I see a new GeekClimber video, and I'm looking forward to new videos in the future!

  • @GeekClimber

    @GeekClimber

    5 жыл бұрын

Hey Daniel, I appreciate your support. Can you elaborate on why you do not like an infomercial video? IMO this is a win-win-win situation. Viewers get to discover a product that actually solves a real problem and verified by me. If you come across this product yourself, you will have no idea whether this product is a scam or not, and you won't be sure if you wanna risk your money to try it out. You don't need to pay me anything and can continue to watch my videos for free. For myself, I get to be compensated once in a while for my effort of making videos. Granted, there are other intangible benefits of making videos, for example, having an opportunity to climb with Paul Robinson, but still it's nice to actually earn something that I can pay the bills with. As for the companies, obviously they want more people to discover their product so that's a win for them as well. I tried reaching out to major climbing brands to get pro-athlete like sponsorship deals but I got rejected by every single of them. If you don't like me being compensated in this way, the only other way I can think of is being directly compensated by viewers, say if I open a patreon account, would you be willing to support me directly?

@@GeekClimber I would definitely support you on Patreon. I am a big advocate of supporting individuals like yourself who put the time and effort into generating creative and informative videos. I also think it's completely fair to be compensated by a company for promoting a product, as long as you clearly disclose your intent in the beginning of your video. Otherwise, it seems like you are leveraging your subscriber base for sole purpose of selling a product. Honesty and transparency is the key. I subscribe to your channel because I think you do an excellent job of explaining topics to beginner and intermediate climbers alike. I think it's great that you're taking on sponsored products. However, I believe that this video could've been a little more objective. For example, you could've compared multiple methods for removing odor from climbing shoes and performed a blind before-after smell test with 2-3 volunteers (using their own shoes), rating on a scale from 1-10. Not very scientific, but still better than just assuming this product is better than DIY solutions that can be done with standard cleaning supplies.

Agree that I could've made the video more interesting by getting more people and more products involved. Thanks for the feedback. I recommend this product because it works almost instantly.

Unusual that they washed their feet (in sinks for feet) after the session-kinda weird, but cool. Quick tipp for people not wanting to buy something ! Let your shoes dry out after climbing in a cold enviroment and also take them off between routes, since Clostridies need water in order to produce butanic acid, which is the component of your sweet that smells bad, so by taking away the water and sometimes sterilizing your shoes you get rid of any smell and even prevent it from forming.

IMO you could just be a little more transparent and simply tell that we have no idea about the smell. Additionally less exaggeration could be more informative and would make your product review more credible. It is no problem at all that you want to introduce your viewers to some new products but it shouldn't be an ad but much more a neutral review.

@@GeekClimber that might be the very point that is being made of this video. a lot of youtube videos have a few seconds for a sponsored message instead of a product review. i think the difference between a brand sponsorship vs a product is that a brand covers a wider net and is less intrusive. so for example, this video is specifically an odor problem for shoes, but not every climber sees that as a problem, or a problem that needs solving. your target audience is climbers, so it's natural that you create climbing videos on technique and anything that relates to how we achieve our goals when climbing. i cant explain it well enough after that, so maybe some examples. that's like a programming channel that sudden advertise a ram stick, or a swimming channel that advertises chlorine product for pools. these things are just not relevant for the majority of participants. unless shoe odor affected performance during climbing, i don't think this provided much value to viewers, only to you and potential product sales for the company. now saying that, everyone has to start somewhere. so it's ultimately your decision on what you choose to do with your channel. i hope this helps you understand how this is frowned upon. just imagine if every other video from now on was a sponsored product review, it wouldn't be very fun for the viewers, would it? there are product review channels and their target audience ARE consumers of their niche. so this just doesn't make very much sense to a mature viewer, since you are not a product review channel.

On the contrary is my lucky day because the advice of this video was very useful for me (although I'm not sure if this product is sold in europe, I will check) and I'm absolutely sure, because geek climber is without any doubt an honest and good person, that he is advising this product because he, in first person, has tried it and checked it's a good product. So thank you geek climber and if you want a real lasagne don't put any pasta sauce on the bottom of the baking dish but some besciamel sauce (strictly home made, the industrial ones taste as shit) and in the layers between the pasta sheets put meat sauce (also home made), besciamel sauce and parmigiano and another generous amount of parmigiano on the top.

@@GeekClimber that comparison was what actually put me off from this video. Like srsly I love my evolv shoes so I guess I am a bit biased. But LA sportiva has cheap shoes and so does evolv and that is great for begimners. But both also make really high quality stuff and it's sort of weird that you would just make a brand look that bad. You have a bunch of beginner viewers, that might be thinking about getting their first more expensive pair and with climbing shoes Atleast in my eyes pretty much all brands have great shoes and it's mostly just about what fits your foot. This really bothers me because I have friends that thought they had to get scarpa shoes to get quality. But since the shoes just didn't fit their feet they really did a disservice to themselves.

@Vice Presi My experience with smelly Evolv shoes is mainly around the 2008~2009 days, and I gave up on them after 3 consecutive smelly shoes since then. I am glad to hear from you that their shoes nowadays don't get smelly that easily anymore.

I see where you are coming from. There are a lot of merchants that reached out to me with bad products like t-shirts, flash lights, or random camping gears, and I will never recommend something like those on this channel. For the OdorKlenz powder, I am sure you will have a good experience with it!

Way to shame evolv in the first twenty seconds of the video. They have more expensive, higher quality shoes with an antimicrobial liner. I've had a pair of Oracles for 3 months and they have no odor thanks to their Agion lining. La Sportiva isn't the high quality climbing shoe brand anymore. Paul Robinson was climbing in evolv shoes in one of your training videos too. smh

It's great to know that Evolv makes better shoes nowadays. My experience was mainly based on the 2008~2010 days, and the Evolv shoes back then got smelly really really fast. I actually reached out to Evolv to ask for a pro-athlete sponsorship before but unfortunately they rejected me. If I have the opportunity to be sponsored by Evolv like Paul, I won't have the need to work with non-climbing brands to make videos like this to pay my bills.

What you said is like why I need a car when my horse already runs pretty fast. As you know, it takes a lot of effort to make all these videos so I would like to be compensated for my effort. Isn't it a good idea that the compensation comes from big companies instead of viewers? How about this, if I open a patreon account, will you be willing to support me directly?
