Making Carbon Fiber Hull for RC Jetsprint Boat

FREE STL FILES FOR THE MOULD: www.cgtrader.c...
NEW JET PUMP: www.cgtrader.c...
This was the first time I tried to make a hull from carbon fiber. I had made many fibreglass projects before, but here I really wanted to get the lightest hull possible.
The difference in weight in comparison to fibreglass is very significant. My 40 cm fibreglass hull I made before (video: • RC Jet Sprint Boat wit... ) was 50 g heavier than this 50 cm one.
I also decided to make this hull open top - real jetsprint boats obviously do not have any cover - and I will see if it works at all. The reason was to save a LOT of weight, achieve better look and easier maintance.
The main problem with this build was that I did not know sharp edges in the mould were such a big problem. Therefore many imperfections in the corners showed up and I had to fix them with epoxy filler.
Anyway, great result.

It's better to apply a coat of resin to the mould before the first layer of carbon and work it up through the mat from underneath. This reduces the chance of air bubbles and pitting on your finished surface. Build up the layers in the same way.

this looks like it would benefit from vacuum epoxy injection process

You mean 3D printed layers? This hull is 500mm and layers were 0.3mm here, so something over 1667:) Or you mean carbon fiber layers, then that's in the video.

I think you did a great job. I've seen a lot of videos where they apply gelcoat first. You may get better results next time.

Thanks. I was doing this for the first time so I just wanted to keep things simple so only epoxy. Next time we will see :D

Amazing stuff! I downloaded the files for printibg the moulds, do you have any tips on which 3D printer to choose? (I'm a novice when it comes to 3D printing, and could use a bit of guidance:)

I have Prusa MK3 and it is very good, also very popular with big user base and good support. There is also Prusa mini but I dont recommend it because the build volume would be too small for me. If you want to go lower than 1000$ which is about the Prusa MK3 price, I cannot really give you advice because I only have one printer. I just know that for example Creality Ender 3 is cheap and has good reviews.
