    I saved your video some time ago, and never got around to viewing. I wish I had as I think this is an outstanding idea on how to make up cartridges in advance. The traditional manner of the use of paper seems ripe with issues such as water damage, tearing, and so on. Clearly a plastic tube solves all of these issues as well as the age old problem of how long a preloaded cartridge will last given the problem of humidity. Now all we have to do is come up with something we can just slide into the cylinder.

    I have been making paper cartridges for my 1858 New Army and some time they are hard to get the paper/powder end in the cylinder. It will sometime puncture and some of the powder will mis going into the cylinder. I realy like your idea!!! Next time I go to the hardware store I am going to get me a roll of that 3/8" I.D. clear tubing and make me up some loaders! This simple idea can be greatly improved with wooden plug made a bit longer, sticking out of the tube, and the bullet plugged in with base up/outside. The way it works: -pull out the wooden plug with your teeth -drop the powder into the chamber -rotate the tube and push the bullet out with your fingers directly to the chamber -ram the bullet Also, check my Colt Navy 1851 DIY cap speedloader at kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZImg1dWRobOveJM.html

    HEADS UP - TO STRAIGHTEN THE VINYL TUBING. 10' of vinyl tubing in the typical coil IS TO KINKY. SO: Removed wire ties and put in the clothes dryer checking about every minute for 4-5 minutes until the coil had loosened to about 1/2 the diameter if the dryer. Removing it by hand it was hot but tolerable. It felt thicker but I just laid it against the wall in my long hallway. Next day it was back to correct size and very straight yet flexible.

    I use grits also, being a Southern Boy, never know when you might need a snack at the range. Could you just pour in the filler, then the powder on top of that so once the bullet is removed the powder goes in first then the filler, sure there will be some mixing of the two. Other wise I would think the bullet should go on the filler side so you don't have to keep track of it as long.

    If you use filler make the tube double sided with the wood piece in the middle and a removable wood plug on the powder side and bullet over the filler, pull the plug, dump the powder, flip it and pull the ball, dump the filler in and seat the ball, good to go….

    Very helpful info Mark. Keep up the good work. I have some .50 caliber 360gr Minie bullets, would you happen to know what powder charge is recommended for those?? I have used as low as 60grs up to 120grs in my CVA Buckhorn Magnum inline.

  • @erasgonehistoricalmolds2400

    @erasgonehistoricalmolds2400

    6 жыл бұрын

    Jim, if they are a true hollow base Minnie Ball use a lighter charge. Are you sure they are a Minnie bullet and not a solid base Maxie Ball or R.E.A.L? I'd say no more than 60 grains for a true Minnie bullet. Also check the twist rate on your inline. Modern muzzle loaders typically have a very fast rifling twist. Minnie Balls like a slow twist, about 1-66 or slower. If what you have is actually a solid base bullet that engraves on the rifling during loading, then you want a faster twist and I think you are good up to around 120 grains. You need to work up a load with the bullet of your choice to see which gives you the best grouping. Good Luck!

    You might also need to have each cylinder worked to function in the gun. You also really don;t want to be carrying around loaded and capped cylinders......if just going to the range.

    "Ach du lieber, mein schatz"! Very nice video & fine idea. Can't help but wonder though, is there any danger with static electricity setting off the powder charge? Obviously one won't want to rub the loaded tube on your clothes & give my "wonderment" a test!! I use a sized piece of plastic tubing around my caps to keep the spent cap from tying up my revolver. Works fine, but you'll have to pry the spent cap off the nipple rather than just "flinging" if off. But there is usually more than one way to "skin the cat" if you look hard enough! "Gifs goot feelingk" as the ol' German used to say!!!

    Any spark would jump from the outside of the tube to another object, not inside the tube, it's super unlikely that you would get a spark with that kind of tubing anyway. They use the same stuff medically for pure oxygen which could cause a full-on disaster if there were a spark, so you'll be safe using it like this.

    In most cases I do too. That is the mystique of shooting historical firearms, using the historically correct ammo for the gun in question. But, sometimes that is not practical for the type of shooting you are doing. The good thing about a quick load, home made or not, is that I can have a precisely pre-measured or pre-weighed charge ready to pour. No fumbling with flasks or measures on the range.

    Mark Hubbs The way I load the paper cartridges is on the round loader I made that holds 16 to 18 rounds. I seen it made by a Frenchman, I'm sure you have seen the same video. This method is simple to make and is worth the time so I can load many rounds and they store very well. Btw. I really appreciate all your videos. They are quality made. Thanks. As Robert E. Lee would sign his letters. " Forever your humble servant " Chris.

    Please don't put the lead in your mouth it's very harmful to your health. I'm telling you this because I care about you and your health.and I really enjoyed your video and I'm going to try your method of useing the tube for holding powder and bullet and maybe a cardboard over powder card made of thick poster board. I just glue three layers of poster board together and press it in on my powder charge and then filler and then my conical bullet and then grease the hole over the conical bullet's. Oh and I use bee's wax on my lube grooves of my bullets and it works really great. And I always weigh my powder because it makes way truer shoots than useing by volume loads . I normally use paper cartridges that's has potassium nitrate on them and the end of my paper cartridge I have red phosphorus mixed with a small amount of cap gun powder with 90 percent alcohol in a small lid that I just put the very end of my paper cartridge on a dowel rod and I then put the dowel rod in a hole in a peice of wood with 24 holes for 24 dowels and paper cartridge's. And let them dry for a day or so. The red phosphorus mixed with cap gun powder gives a really good ignition and I have never had a miss fire or dud . And in my wooden cartridge holder it's has a piece of waxed paper and the sides of the holes in the paper cartridge holes to keep friction down on my paper cartridge's in my box . The type ends of my paper cartridge's are almost like strike anywhere match's but not quite as sensitive but ignition is really good on my cartridges.

    Your exactness in explanation and word use speaks highly and lends insight to your inquiring educational depth. So often we see the misuse and interchangeability of mold and mould. Mold, as you use, is the correct American spelling and mould is Britain spelling according to Webster. Another example, just as American horses run counter clockwise on a race track, Britain's horses run clockwise. Seems the revolution is still fought in customs and word usage that creates confusion. This leads to a wondering of why Lee uses the spelling mould? I know this is irrelevant and distracts from your fascinating information. However, suspect you exactly know the answer,

    Advocating the idea of putting lead in your mouth is not a good thing to be doing. Regularly handling lead is a cause for concern, let alone putting it in places where it can be easily ingested/absorbed. We live in an era where ignorance is not an excuse.
