Fantastic set of boxes, particularly liked the use of the shooting board to make the liners of the non hinged boxes. One of the (many) things I like about your videos is that you don't try to hide when things don't work out how you would like... explaining why you went from the box joints to the dovetails for the inserts is invaluable for a beginner to see.

Utterly fantastic, Jay! I appreciate and admire the supreme care you took in going way beyond the extra mile to ensure that these are far more than just boxes as gifts. They are truly heirlooms that will retain memories for generations. I certainly hope you mark them with your name so that some young fella three generations from now will hold your work in his hands and marvel at the moments you spent making this box to such precise form. Major high fives, Jay, from this retired shop teacher in Tupelo!

Really useful tips there, thanks for sharing. I'm doing boxes right now, so the timing is perfect. The shooting board is something I really need to make. Every time I see you using it I feel the need. I would suggest using a drying oil rather than mineral oil. Tung oil is perfect for the less is more look, mineral oil attracts dust and grime over time because it never dries. Hemp oil is another option; I just started using it and it does a great job.

Wonderful! The hand tool guys call that fit a "piston fit". Saw your clip on Instagram and could tell you were enjoying it. They really came out great! Of all the makers I watch on youtube, I think you handle the table saw better then any of them. I am glad you had to bevel the box bottoms, I think it looks better.

Really nice job Jay, I remember watching your videos 2-3 years ago and thinking,"This guy is really talented, He could really shine if he would use some better materials than construction grade pine & plywood. I went to art school, and its a weird phenomenon. When you use higher grade materials you feel compelled to make things a little better, with more attention to detail. Like the dovetail joints in the trays, It's almost like you feel you owe it to the material to make your work look as good as the wood.
