Making Bikes From Titanium & Carbon?! | How Are Atherton Bikes Made?

Спорт

The Atherton's have spent their lives racing and developing mountain bikes and so we were excited to see they they have started their own MTB brand, all built in the UK! We have been following the Atherton Bike company journey from the very start and it's been amazing to see to their UK based head quarters to check out the full process of building one of their high end bike frames! Atherton use a combination of 3D Printed lugs in combination with high end carbon tubing which they say has many benefits, such as being able to produce quickly produce rapid prototyping, a lot of sizes and even custom geometry!

    Atherton Bikes have rapidly become the coolest bike brand for me. If I was younger I would love one of their downhill bikes , actually I would love one anyway just as wall art in my hall ! Everything about the bikes, the family and the park all ties together seamlessly, you can clearly see the way they all approached their competition riding years is now being transferred in the way their business's are being ran and marketed. I understand there is an Ebike in the background and new Ebike trails coming up at Dyfi where no doubt a lot of the R&D is being done for them. The ultimate package to get the products right. Looking forward to seeing GMBN Tech return for a follow up to actually ride the bikes , both DH and Trail, and hopefully show how the test guys approach their job when testing components. Great show as always guys.

    One of the best things on the tech channel ever. Excellent video and respect to Atherton bikes being so open about the process. I am still confused as to how the bike is actually put together at the end - there's no flex in anything so how is the triangle put together; I can see how each corner can be done but how is the triangle completed? :) Rather like Koenigsegg, this is definitely a lottery win purchase if only for the joy of the engineering that goes into it.

    Looking at the frame it's a very conventional modern design, but they don't seem to have taken the construction method and reworked the design to make it fit to that method. Considering the strength of the printed titanium I think they could have changed those areas to reduce the complexity and take more use of the advantages of the material, especially on that bottom bracket on a good mid pivot design.

  • @mizzorian
    @mizzorian2 жыл бұрын

    the main question with any 3D printed thing is durability and strength...where is the extensive testing? especially fatigue testing? it's one thing to ride and see that nothing was wrong with it, but there is a reason why everybody is doing lab testing before hands

    Really best of both worlds. In then end this could be they way the whole industry might go. Making a carbon fiber bike is incredibly complicated. This takes out the complexity while maintaining the advantages. And when these parts are manufactured in an industrial process they will become much cheaper. For mass production you could even work with lost forms while doing the prototyping on these laser machines.

    Composites can handle complicated loads just as good, if not better than titanium. A lugged frame allows for faster prototyping and design tweaks verses carbon molds.

    Please, PLEEEEAAAASE, would you be kind enough to visit and make a topic about (Dan) Stanton bikes which is also situated in UK and who passionally make gorgeous bikes such as its ultimate version of the FS Switch9er full-suss rig featuring a titanium front triangle and a carbon (or alloy depending on customer's choice) rear system... which is.... I don't know, I've got no word for that, I'm french ;) Dan Stanton and his crew deserve your attention! Cheers! Santé! and thanks for your contents; I do appreciate them a lot.

    Nice to see their focus on safety with the full face PAPR masks when dealing with titanium and carbon fiber dust. I wonder if those glue up jigs adapt to all of the different sizes or if they have to have loads of jigs for all of the different sizes.

    The jig plates only change per model, the jig incorporates sliding scale for reach and the block that support the tubes are adjustable

    Had been thinking for so long to buy the AM200. The bike looks amazing but the lack of reviews on this bike and being outside UK (for warranties) pulled me back. Still need a DH rig for the next year so maybe this time I’m able to buy one.

    We have some reviews in the coming months. So keep a look out. We can replace any parts globally under warranty. But as you can see we use a just in time manufacturing model and do not hold much stock. We print to order so if there was an issue we would replace the part within a maximum of 90 days. But I promise you it would be top priority.

    Will they ever be able to change the shape of the tubes and lugs for different /new looks of the frame or will the frame shape always have the same tube look?
