Making an 8” Cleaver from 1084 & 15N20 Steel with a Walnut Handle (FULL KNIFE BUILD)

Description
In this video I forge out an 8” cleaver from 1084 and 15N20 steel. I started by forge welding the layers of 1084 and 15N20 together to get thick enough starting stock to get the height I needed in the blade. After forging, I annealed the steel by allowing the blade to cool slowly overnight in the forge. I drilled holes in the handle for (6) stainless steel handle pins, and also several additional holes for weight reduction and to allow a channel for the epoxy bond through the tang from one scale to the other.
I normalized the blade at 1650F, 1500F, and 1400F. I quenched the blade at 1475F in Parks 50 that was heated to ~120F. I tempered the blade for two 2-hour cycles at 425F.
I finished the bevels to an A30 belt (~800 grit) on the 2x72. I etched the blade in Gator Piss to reveal the layers of 15N20 near the cutting edge along the bevels. Ultimately I didn’t like the look of the etch, and decided to hand sand the bevels up to 400-grit.
I attached walnut scales with black G10 liners. I rough shaped the handle on the 2x72, and refined the shape by hand. I took the handle finish up to 400-grit for a satin finish. I applied 3 coats of Odie’s Oil finish, and allowed at least 12 hours of cure time between coats.
I sharpened the blade at 31 degrees using a combination of Wedgek angle guides and Ultra Sharp diamond stones. I used 300-grit, 1200-grit, and 3000-grit stones along with Trend lapping fluid. I polished the edge with a double sided leather strop loaded with 5 micron diamond paste on one side, and 3.5 micron diamond paste on the other.
