For added realism, render an inverted camera in the water. Like the water droplet from the astronaut at 5:58 or the glass balls. It'll feel more real because our brains automatically assume it'll invert so when it doesn't, we feel something is off about the water.
@TamaraMakesGames

That's a very good point but unfortunately that's where my hardware limitations come in. Unreal supports refraction and it does invert the image. It just doesn't work on my computer. This really bothered me as well and I have spent a good chunk of my time trying to fake that reflection but my attempts weren't successful. But who knows, maybe it'll be available for more powerful PCs or maybe I'll figure out how to replicate it

Water bending has always been a cool concept, especially if you could control different liquids with different viscosity so they act different (maybe something you could play around with). Great work and I’m excited to see the next step, you’ve got my sub!

Implementing liquid physics (at any form) is always a lot of fun! Few years ago I also made a very short game about water-bending but in 2D. Even with that, the mechanics were already tricky to design and implement. Looking forward to how you will approach this topic in 3D! It's not much and 1-dimension less but if you are looking for inspirations you can find a little showcase video of that game on my channel.

Yes, i thought the same! I think maybe when the water is floating it looks like water but when it falls down and disperse on the floor it looks exactly like liquid mercury, I agree! I'm sure is something about the reflections and the fact that the dirt doesn't "absorb" the water, that's what it makes it not look like water, like it's too thic to be water, the dirth should immediatly absorb it to be realistic. But yeah, It's a work in progress so I trust it will get even better from now on! Ps: wishlisted on Steam! :D

I have ALWAYS wanted to be a waterbender, and loved water simulations. I've rewatched Moana so many times just for how the water looks. Didn't know I needed this game until now. My one request is the ability to be able to change the state of the water, too - make it ice or fog! I want to throw icicle knives at people or obscure my presence with fog like a smoke bomb.
@TamaraMakesGames

I'm so glad you're interested in the game! I will do my best to incorporate your requests into the game. I'm curious about how you'd use fog. Katara used it for hiding, do you imagine something similar? Fog is usually an aesthetic addition in games, it would be cool to put it to use
Hello. I am studying to become a game designer/dev. A few things that could help. To make the water seem more realistic you could put a multitude of things in the water to sell the realism. A few things such as air bubbles, dirt particles, murkiness, etc. As for the inversion, it is more noticable on small droplets but if its large bubbles you can do a warp effect instead. Obviously its still in its early stages but the player should collect the water for bending. So instead of a large droplet coming out of the water it would be more of a stream coming out of the body of water into the players hands, collecting until the water necessary is bendable. This could be acomplished using a teather system that attaches the players hand to the body of water. It would sell the fluidity of the water you are collecting especially if the player moves around while they are.
So glad to see you back Tamara😇The work is impressive as always.

This might be a personal preference, but I think if you went for a more stylized look it would help make the water look even better. It would also prolly help running it on your computer in general.
@TamaraMakesGames

Nothing wrong with stylized water, it's just that I was going for a more realistic look because I wanted waterbending to feel as if you were doing it in real life. I am considering taking some creative liberties but only if it adds to the experience. And thanks for sharing your opinion!
Hey, I had a couple ideas for how you could deal with the whole dropping the water ball down logic.Thought I'd share You could potentially detect what surface the waterball was dropped on as each material interacts with water differently, dropping it on soil as you did in the demonstration would result in deformation of the soil rather than spreading of the water along with water droplets that bounce off of the collected water for example. Here are some things you can try: Water ball dropped in: Water -> Treat ball as a rigidbody and use the same mesh dynamic to almost treat the top layer of water like a fabric, combine this with particle effects to give it that droplet look. After a preset threshold delete the waterball and increase the height of the water body based on the mass of the waterball. Soil/Grass -> Create a small pocket of water and then perform the same functions as the water to water collision. Soil/Grass option 2 -> Get a moisture index on the soil and increase it when water falls onto the ground. Give players the ability to extract water from the ground if the moisture index is high enough. Solid Ground (Concrete, metal, glass, etc) -> What you are doing rn is perfect for such materials Sorry for the long message, hope this can be of help. If you have more questions feel free to reach out, I am a developer myself so can help with implementation. Never worked with unreal though, more of a unity guy.

Welcome back and welcome to Unreal ! If you want to try again the "water plane" you could look up Unreal's "procedural mesh". It allows you to create a mesh through code and move the vertex around. I made water moving around like that using points moving up and down, affecting surrounding mesh, to have a feeling of waves, it also allows to have gameplay affect those points and have the water react to gameplay element for a more dynamic feel. It's not water simulation, but it's also a lot less demanding on performances. Good luck with the game !

Hello, first of all great work... As someone who has been developing their water system for almost a year, I know how demanding and interesting it can be. But let me suggest a solution that will make your job easier in terms of water dynamics: look into SDF algorithms (whether it's for Unreal or Unity, Unreal Engine has a built-in SDF system, while for Unity, you'll have to put in a bit more effort to develop your own). I'm working on ocean and river system in the Unity engine, and modified SDF algorithms combined with compute shaders can provide a render texture or buffer containing everything related to water movement, leaving only the final details to be completed in the shaders, also you can use and raymarching technique too. Good luck with your further work.

ngl, finall water looks like mercury, but it maight be just lighting, and the fact that it doesnt sink into the ground and just slides on the top of the dirt in thoes thick bloobs
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I feel like this is the method Portal 2 used, also im pretty sire the water bubble reflects things on the other side to look upside down
Have a feeling, this video's gonna blow up

That feeling better be right 😜
For Saving gpu computation you can add occlusion or like computing reflection transparent in some texture and reusing it though I don't know performance impact of this things

Thanks for the advice! I've tried some tricks with fake transparency with reflections and refraction but it doesn't look good in my case. But it is how a lot of games fake glass and for props it looks pretty good
You mention H20... Me too girl, me too 😆
If u really make this game amazing I will wishlist it and buy it and for sure play it

Thank you! I'll do my best! If you have any wishes for what you'd like to see in the game you can tell me, maybe I can add them 😊
7:40 the water looks like it’s over the grass instead of some of the water going into the ground and through the grass
What if there were keybinds to shape the water when holding it? 1 could make it longer and whip like 2 could be a ball 3 a wall

Shh, that's a spoiler for the next devlog 🤫
Take a shot every time she says "I was done" or something similat to that.
Don't you miss the csharp coding? How are you getting on with blueprints?

Blueprints are fine, they're similar to what I would have written in code. And they're a fast way to prototype things
This along with Rumble brings us one step further to an immersive ATLA game.
I'll be shouting Fus-Do-Rah as I'm flailing water at my foes >XD
Thats a very cool concept. So then we have Rumble for Earth bending, Twisted Water for water, 2 disciplines to go xD Btw. as a Indie myself here are some tips for your steampage: (always easier to hand them them out then to apply them myself but oh well here we go) The screenshots look all the same on first glance, make them stand out each image by itself showing different parts of the game. The "gameplay" clip unfortunately looks scripted and unnatural. It shows that the game will have cool tech under the hood, but thats not the stuff a potential player wants to see... On a story driven game I want to have a glimpse at the story and maybe see some cool mechanics along the way. The reason why i would "attack the tree" just makes no sense and overall does not show actual gameplay. I know its a prototype but on Steam you need to present your prototype a little different than on itch. I am keen to see where it goes from here, keep making that game, because people will want to play it xD. Ohh and I want this for VR please :]

Thank you for such detailed feedback! I really appreciate your tips and I will sure try to incorporate them. I just wanted to say that the game is still in development and while I'm working on all the things I mentioned (story, open world, more water stuff) they are too raw to share. And as an indie, you can surely understand that there are a lot of things to do. But I still decided to announce the game early and put out the Steam page because of feedback. So I'm very grateful that you took the time to write it. And I'm glad you mentioned Rumble, that game was one of my inspirations when I was looking into bending games. Of course, I dream that I could make this in VR but sadly, with the resources I have I don't think I can at this time.
It seems that there will be a new version of water in the new version of Unity

I'm curious to see it then! I wonder if it's going to be similar to what Unreal has 🤔
OMGG the catt
Hm, idk if Unity has it but wouldn't doing this on a sphere with softbody get you what your looking for? Still looks great. I'm over here in Godot still working on character controller crap for and animations... grah!

Well, I'm working in Unreal now so I'm using what's available there. It has a tool to add weight to a skeletal mesh. Good luck with your Godot project! I'm sure you'll figure it out.

@@TamaraMakesGames XD I have to figure it out. Well it appears to me that you've got a satisfactory system, but if you want to you can check out soft body. Though I'd imagine the effect may look more like Goop than water. Also I don't believe their are any words that are not curses in Greek XD.
This thing is more a game than you thought about just finding a setting as 60 year old gamer making it understand the gaming and apply it to game creation.
I'm working on an alchemy game where the main character can control water (to a degree), and this is absolutely *inspiring* I must say.

I'm happy to hear that! Good luck with your project! Alchemy sounds very interesting. By the way, I have a discord server and you're welcome to share your progress there 😊

@@TamaraMakesGames I felt like it would give a good reason for the harvesting and crafting mechanic I'm working on, and it allows me to use the TTRPG setting I wrote ages ago as the base. I appreciate the offer, and may *one day* but right now I'm not super big on Discord outside of as an alternative to text messages for most of my friends.
What’s your PC Setup
Maybe you should research the earth bending game and how it constructed its bending in order to get a good and engaging game like that one.

You mean RUMBLE? That game is one of my inspirations! I think the developers did an amazing job and I hope I can come close to that
