That has very little to do with an actual Viking shield, but you get ALL the props and praise for being an absolute nutcase X-D turning a shield on a lathe may be the most ridiculous thing I've seen done with crafting. You're bloody amazing Rex.

@gordonpromish9218

yep, way too thick, and made of high-quality hardwood. they were supposed to be of yellow linden plywood, cloth or rawhide covered, thin and light, pivoting and deflecting blows rather than resisting penetration, and essentially disposable (except maybe for the boss). but it is pretty work!
@stcredzero

The shield was way too thicc, by a factor of 3 or 4. However, the thickness and turning method would make for a really dandy round table! I'd bet Rex could sell one of those handmade tables for a good price.

@@gordonpromish9218 Well, the texts say they're supposed to be ply, but from what I've heard from the reenactment community there aren't any surviving remnants of shields made that way. The remnants we do have were apparently plank construction, many in pine, with the wood grain running opposite the crossbar, which gives you an index for the grain direction, and tapered from about half an inch total thickness (including the cloth or rawhide) to a quarter inch or less at the edge. Tests have proven that the plank construction was deliberate, letting a sharp sword or axe blade split its way into the rim and bind. I have seen youtube videos of both the construction and the sharp tests if you'd care to see them. I believe they were both on Roland Warzecha's channel.
A trebuchet obviously. We love ya big guy.

Awesome Viking Shield Rex !!!!!!!!!
Hey Rex, seeing that shield mounted up to the homemade lathe makes me think it would make one hell of a monster disc sander!! Oh yeah, awesome shield too! I'm loving this medieval weapon series. I'm thinking...Battle Axe!
Loved the “safety shake” of the equipment!
Oooh, that turned out nice ;D Maybe next, a sharktooth sword but with carved shark teeth? Or a Aztec obsidian blade? Hmm, Roman pilum? It's be ptretty challenging to get the wood that thinned down except maybe by hand. How bout a bearded viking axe? Armour maybe? Like a face mask or a pauldron. A breastplate, like a hoplite muscle cuirass would be quite the challenge. You could try and really push the limits and try for a early firearm like a matchlock. Hollow the barrel and make it "functional" with trigger mechanism and spring propelled musket balls (of wood of course). That'd take forever but it would be a crazy cool work of art.

I am a new subscriber but find myself coming back to your channel more and more. I like this wooden weapons series not just for the weapons but the skill sets used to create each. I have been interested in turning globes and liked your take on it. I also really enjoyed your video on how you started your youtube channel and how you started. Very inspiring. But now that you have a shield and mace. Maybe some sort of armor. I am always a fan of a Good double bladed battle Axe. Whatever you choose, have fun. It translates well to the rest of us.

If you do a sword, check out falchions, another shield- spiked buckler, but I think a battle axe would be sweet.
Not sure if you are still adding to your forged in wood series, but it would be really cool to see a catapult or even a trebuchet on your channel. Not full sized of course, unless you're up for it, but something big enough to throw some mid sized rocks across a yard. The catapult was one of the first major siege weapons, and would probably be easier to make than the trebuchet, but the trebuchet would be pretty cool to see in action. I am new to woodworking, like brand new. Recently, I subscribed to your channel and I wanted to think you for inspiring me to think outside the box and use what is available to me to make work pieces that are functional and beautiful. I also love that the underlying message of all your videos is that woodworking is an art, it is another form of self expression, and that even the most basic of shop tools can still be beautiful works of art. I hope my idea for another forged in wood video inspired you as your videos have inspired me. However, I do understand that a project such as this, even a scaled version, can be quite the undertaking so I understand if you have to pass on this one. Oh, and congrats on the new shop. Haven't watched the video yet, but I will soon.
Thumbs up for the music!!!
you need a Scottish claymore for your collection
Oof, that shield looks super thick. Viking shields were made from split planks that were ~1/2" in thickness and were fast, nimble implements. Still, can't wait to see the build.

That was cool and appropriately dangerous, I mean, scientific. I was kinda hoping you would get hit by a late water balloon at 8:14. As for other ideas, how about a trident? Thanks for sharing, Rex!
you could try making chest armor and if you are feeling masochistic make some wood chainmail.
If we're talking about wooden weapons, you could make one of the most effective wooden weapons in history, if not the most: a bow and arrow. It's very tricky to make a working wooden selfbow, but if you get it right, it can be the most beautiful thing! If you don't want to go into so much work and investigation, a spear would be awesome as well!
A wooden spear would be pretty cool, an atlatl (spear thrower) would be a great carving project.

M16? Derringer? just a thought. seriously, last week, I had 2/3 of a project leave 1/3 of the project behind, and it made it's way to my face. 3.5" cube of yellow pine. Fortunately, the wood wasn't damage. Also, fortunately, my nose was pre-broken, so it just slid a bit over towards the ear that had been bit distant. Little to no permanent damage, but, that hurt like a...well, it hurt a lot. So watching that table top do about 500rpm on the side of your bench...I teared up a little. Really glad your project came out okay. And you don't have any chunks of wood embedded anywhere you hadn't intended to.
G'Day Rex. YOu should make a range of boomerangs for different purposes, I was told by a Wiradjury man that they used the root stock of wattle tres as they had very dense hard woods and the bends in the roots made the grain turn well for the shape of the weapon just like looking for good oak branches for elbows in ship building. I would love to see you take this challenge of using some (common here) rare exotic woods.
very cool quality vids!
The shield looks terrific! Great job and I look forward to your next wooden weapon.
Very fun video love it.
Your next historcal project should be probably be a gladiator class call the "Hoplomacus". Their weapon of choic is bascially a spear and a small wrist mounted shield(it bascially a size of a buckler shield but without a boss and is strap to you insteas of a grip to hold) and depending which one is accurate they also either carry the gladius sword or a pugio dagger(which ever it is it one of those two.
Roman gladius. Centurions actually trained with wooden replicas that were up to twice as heavy than the metal ones

Sugestion for the next weapon: bambu sword . I once saw a bambu knife that actualy cuts. You have to laminate the material and put the grain in the right orientation to allow you to sharpen it, but you can make a real weapon out of it.

That's one beautiful table you built there. Now where's that viking shield? 😁 It obviously looks nice and is cool. Just, you know, in no way actually resembles a historical shield. These were normally made of cross laminated thin wood slices.
I thought it was totally historically accurate. Do you not remember in the film 'The Vikings' how Kirk Douglas's face got scarred because he didn’t wear his helmet when using his electric lathe? Or when Tony Curtis sent Janet Leigh back to the hardware store because she got the wrong size screws? And who can forget Ernest Borgnine’s gallant fight against the water balloons? Am I giving my age away here? I bet most people who watch your videos are far too young to remember films with that cast list. I also bet your video was a lot more accurate than the film. I’m thinking of getting a small lathe, but there’s a few things I want to comfortably master in the workshop first. As always a brilliantly entertaining video, and the shield looked pretty cool. I hope you don’t mind my jest.

@Rex Krueger - HEY!! It seems I can send files even in a Facebook Message Request! Please go check your FB message requests to find the plans for the ROCK MAPLE VIKING SWORD! ^_^
The vikings didn't put iron on their shield rims. They glued on rawhide. The idea behind the shield being flexible is to have blows glance off and continue forward momentum. This serves two purposes. To not have the wearer of the shield withstand the actual force behind the blow, and to open up the opponent to counterattack when their momentum carries them forward. If your theory of getting their weapons stuck in the shield is true, you also wouldn't put a metal rim on it, pohibiting weapons from getting stuck. Viking shields were incredibly thin and light weight. They were also ment to be used offensively by punching with the rim of the shield
