For those wondering the trees were planted. An independent firm verified reports from all the planting partners that over 20 million trees were planted. Those trees will cover close to 200km², absorb about 100 million tons of carbon and remove about 100 thousand tons of pollutants from the atmosphere.

I just received the notification that the 20M goal for team trees is now a fact and in my way here, I just saw a little video of Mark Robber saying that we should take a moment to remember who first told us about team trees and congratulate that person, well Mehdi, you're that person to me. Good point. Deforestation is a complex problem and just farmland or cities cannot be blamed for it. It's pointless to blame the place you live and the place that feeds you as well. Food wasting, deforestation of areas that are supposed to contain resources that could be replaced by plant based alternatives, illegal logging (that is especially bad in Asia and Eastern Europe) and certain types of pollution that lead to deforestation are also parts of the issue. But as Mehdi said, Teemtrees is about making an example and planting forest on places that could be used for this purpose but are not yet.

@@sudombd1230 focussing on your last point: I live in an area where well-meaning ( but misguided in my opinion) groups buy up productive farmland and return it to forest. Very little food is sourced from these areas once reforested. What percentage of the money raised by TeamTrees will actually be soaked up by administrative costs? I reckon some people will get rich(er) and many of the trees planted will die due to lack of follow up and poor location choice.

Whenever something goes wrong you never give up you just keep trying and that one makes me happy

I absolutely love this! People are starting to understand the power they have when they are united.

On the Great Plains in the US and Canada, it was grassland that was converted to farms, not forest. With regard to deforestation, though, it’s a habitat loss problem, not a too-few-seedlings problem. Planting trees is what you do for harvest, to get a quicker or more lucrative crop than you’d get from natural regeneration. It’s about economic return, not ecology.

The actual planting is being managed by the Arbor Day Foundation. Nobody is going to be trying to randomly plant trees on someone else's land. They're already up to 670,000. Still, it's not as good for the soil because you replace the diversity of native grass species with a monoculture of grain. Also, farmers till, which doesn't happen in nature thereby disturbing the soil.

@@adnanchinisi7871 they use the prairie grass to stabilize the soil. Otherwise you get huge dust storms and your crops blow away or get buried. There was a reason early 1900s saskatchewan was called the dust bowl

@@calvindibartolo2686 I know, what I'm saying is that having miles of wheat or corn is not natural-- aka a monoculture. Native grasses are essential to the prairie ecosystem.

If they ever had trees they were trampled years ago by mammoths, bison and wooly rhinos. Damn you ancient animals!
