Making a Stainless Steel Boat Rudder using tab and slot construction

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Making a simple boat rudder out of stainless steel can be a daunting task, but with tab and slot construction, the job is made a bit simpler. the assembly of this rudder is known as a weldment and it is a pivotal part of our fabrication language.
tab and slot construction is very similar to mortise and tenon joinery in wood, except for the obvious difference of being in metal.
while this might look like a rudder for my boat build, it belongs to a customer that requested it custom made!
the rudder is a duplicate of the customers existing rudder, they wanted to have a spare on the boat since the have already experienced a catastrophic failure in the past. the materials are all 316 Stainless steel. the joints make a strong positive mechanical connection, and the welding holds it all together.
our New welder Cam makes his KZread video debut in this video, he did a great job, and learned a little bit about tab and slot construction in weldments.
i dont cover the tab and slot details too much in this video but if you want to know more you can find a lot more detail in my picnic table video (link below)
if you want a custom rudder made, just send me a message, and i will get your details quoted.

What is 1/4 inch 3/16 steel? I know it is 1/4 316, but, it sounded like 1/4 3/16

Lol, I can see how that might be confusing. It is 1/4" thick 316 stainless steel, Not 3/16" steel

Ray MAKES, makes sense I hope it didn’t warp at all. I had a boat I made when I was like 5 out of plywood and 2x3 and it looks more like a coffin than a boat but the plywood warped in the winter even though it was in a quonset barn full full of hay. I guess -25 is pretty cold. Can’t wait for part 11
