Steel Sailboat Build Part 1

Construction began in November of 2016. It will be a steel hulled, junk rigged sailboat. No plans, just a vision of how it will look in my head and making it up as I go. The goal is to build a strong, safe sailboat for the lowest cost possible.
Support the build through the purchase of a challenge coin:
www.svseeker.com/wp/product/ru...
Total Cost to Date (including welder, grinder, 3 winches): $3148.00
Cost of 14 pieces 5'x10' 11 gauge mild steel sheets: $1738.00 US (including delivery)
100 pounds of flux core welding wire: $790
200 4 inch diameter metal cutting wheels: $100
I already had the Lincoln welder which I purchased for $400 over ten years ago. Makita grinder was about $60 over ten years ago. Three quantity 8000 pound winches about $60 ($20 each).
The 14 sheets of steel weigh 3500 pounds total and were purchased from Patton Metal Supply in San Bernardino, California.

    Mate... I am impressed. I was watching these without sound and was thinking to myself "Is this madder going to build a steel boat with just and old welder and some handy bullies?!" And now that I've watched a few more, I'm ecstatic to see that that is exactly what you're doing. That's my kind of spirit, I hope to do the same soon. Fair winds and following seas!

    Craig, I've used small welders with a 20% duty cycle. I remove the covers and put a fan next to it to blow out the heat from the core. This greatly extends the time it take for the thermal overload to shut it down. I'm in Van Nuys.

    had you considered gunnels and bulkheads stood upright and flanged and then welding sections of hull along the outside? To me it seems the obvious way to go and since I'm not doing it and you are I was wondering what the thought process was for one method over another.

    May not come across that situation again now that you're past it, but if you're trying to pull stuff together like that, it's always best to just use a locking pair of pliers (the parrot style come to mind) and weld beads as you make it come together. They are also useful for grabbing sheet metal and moving it around. Digging the build so far, found the pic on Doug's channel, figured you had to have some sort of video by the way it looked and went hunting :) this is going to be a neat boat when she's done.

    Thanks for the comment and the idea. I love learning new techniques and how to use new tools. How would I use locking parrot pliers to pull the ribs to the sheet or line up a sheet to a sheet? Weld a piece to lever against with the pliers?

  • @agentnuget
    @agentnuget6 жыл бұрын

    looking forward to this. would you recommend starting with say a rib Skelton and welding the sheets to the ribs instead of trying to do the shell first?

  • @craigreisgen8179

    @craigreisgen8179

    6 жыл бұрын

    A rib skeleton would make symmetry much easier. The added challenge would be hanging the sheets on the ribs instead of standing them up on end on the ground. Hanging them would be totally doable with some jack stands.

    Craig, i had that problem over heating duty cycle. i put 3 computer fans in on there own 12 volt power source, and i could well all day without any down time, unless i wanted the down time. two fans right on the transformer and one facing out to remove the heat. noise not that bad, rather well than worry about the fans, Doug sent us over from SV Seeker, Old One Legged Joseph T.

    was worried, with the statement of building it without plans, ive done that on small houses, and cabin's. they turned out ok but cost me a lot of extra money, and work but there never going out onto the harsh ocean salt environment. just a warning don't go cheap on the paint and corrosion inhibitor, it will come back to bit you or who buys it in a couple years. but good luck. not sure if you used corten steel, but I'm looking at aluminum boat's

    bud your welds do not look good at all.they look dirty, your metal looks dirty and not even remotely prepped , and you have it laying on the ground that's why your welds more than likely aren't lookin too good. i don't mind the budget based mind set but you would have been better off getting a more higher end welder that runs off it's own generated power .
