Making a space for magazines and local voices to thrive

Spruce co-founders Bonnapart Galeng and Ric Gindap felt a void in Manila when big bookstore chains started removing magazines from the racks. By putting up Spruce, they are able to share with others their love for the art of magazines and how it can be a window to the world. "This space is living proof that print is not dead!" proclaims Gindap. Visitors are greeted by a diptych by artist Ronald Caringal of Brillo soap boxes bearing the words "Brilliant Bullshit". Locally made furniture by e/lou and Lamana are featured in the store in black so that they disappear into the space and spotlight the riot of colors from the magazine covers.
Spruce Gallery is located in UG3 of City & Land Mega Plaza along ADB Avenue corner Garnet Road in Ortigas Centre. Nearest parking will be at the Robinsons Galleria across the street.

Magazines are going out of business and many others are shifting to Quarterly instead of Monthly. Very few Newspapers also. I am just far enough outside of a Major City that I can't buy a copy of the closest regional newspaper. Online is great but it isn't the same. Thank you for sharing your story.

A great store concept. When something - for example, magazines - essentially becomes obsolete in today's digital age, it becomes more significant when someone nevertheless chooses to create one. There is still (and always be) a niche for magazines, but to survive they need to be genuinely unique with an original design, beautiful paper stock, authentic voices, and showcasing people and stories that wouldn't be found elsewhere. As Mr. Gindap sayes, print isn't dead, but to survive it needs to be better and more specialised.

You totally understand the major reasons why certain titles continue to thrive in the digital age, James! It is very encouraging to know that there are people like you out there who has this kind of mindset :) I am curious whether magazines also have a more personal or emotional connection to you? What are the titles that truly made you fall in love with magazines? @James-In-Exile

Love “magazines” like Apartamento. I love Japanese magazines, MOOKs despite not being able to read the language. Some great stuff also being made in the UK.
