MAKING A SLIDING DOVETAIL FLY BOX | Cinematic Woodworking

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I made this sliding dovetail box using Acacia wood. Let me know in the comments what you would use a box like this for?

    That's what I did on mine (two pairs of 5mm magnets.) It didn't occur to me to make the dovetails, or at least rough them out using the table saw with the blade at an angle! I hogged out material using the table saw, but at 90's and then did the dovetails on my router table. Fun to watch different ideas in practise.

    I've got a penny collection (one of every penny since 1951 until end of production and some others from the 1800s) and I've been wanting a nice way to display/protect them in a grid-like pattern to really show off the decades. I was initially thinking of having them hang from a wall somewhere, but I do think it'd work out skipper to make a box like this that's much wider and longer (but again, rather than a recess, flat bottom mill in a grid of holes to snugly hold the pennies) I'm also wondering if there's an easy way to make a backing piece so the box can only open by sliding out one side? Do you think it'd be possible to somehow only cut the dovetail in 95% of the way?

  • @blacktimbercompany5716

    @blacktimbercompany5716

    4 жыл бұрын

    That would be such an awesome application for this, you should definitely get it a go and let me know how it turns out. I was thinking the same thing with this design, adding a small brass rod drilled into the end of the male portion that would stick up only an 1/8” and having a little recess spot in the female portion were that pin would catch and stop it from sliding out from that end... hopefully that makes some sense. 😂

    As a long-time Fly Fisherman, I was instantly interested in seeing this unique Fly box. I was overly assuming that this was going to be the whole Fly-Fishing Box and it was not. But the little box that you did make was very nice and Yes, Unique as well. What I did not like to sit through is all the close-up knob turning and bits of other none essential waists of time instead of the actual box making that would have cut out over 3/4 of the total time in this video. So, I mainly blew through that much of this video just to get to this little box. in my fly-fishing box, I not only had a ton of fly's but my tools for making flies on the spot and feathers and threads and all the other materials and hooks of all types. This is what I was expecting to see you build. Maybe next time you'll do one. I'd like to see what your idea would come up with.
