    The ice melted due to the exothermic reaction of the resin setting. Placing it in the pressure pot ensured that there is absolutely no space around that water. Because of that, the water itself can not move at all. If you did a larger cube with glitter frozen into it, then you would be able to quantify the movement of the fluid trapped within the resin. Still an amazing project!!

    TECHNICALLY, if the water were under the right pressure, it would be solid (ie. Ice) above 0C. But water is one of those weird ones, where it actually takes LESS than 1 ATM to reach solid at higher temps, and while the addition of the alcohol? dyes mess with that, I just don't see it LIKELY that the "ice" is still "frozen" in this case. But NOT impossible.

    When you put the ice into the resin, it quickly cools & hardens and then becomes encapsulated. That's what made it float, even more than the less dense ice already would've done. I love trees and kept imagining myself weighing down the ice bubbles with a branched bit of wood to make a fantasy bubble tree. Loved this project, Nick, as well as the movie references! You're a stitch! (Of course its water bubbles, hon! The ice is long gone!😉)💕

    So I guess we've learned that freezing water leaves it solid long enough that it doesn't prevent the resin from setting up like the orbeez did. Can you freeze orbeez? This has a lot of potential. You can make custom ice forms. I'm also thinking about how flowers sometimes get moldy in the resin and if freezing them would prevent that. Or what about resin snow globes.

  • @Katja32

    @Katja32

    3 жыл бұрын

    The flowers would definitely still mold. Dry them before putting them in resin to prevent this. Maybe try using a dehydrator on its lowest settings (to try to preserve color). The reason flowers and such mold in resin is because of moisture; freezing them will not remove the moisture. The ice in this obviously is liquid, like the blue ice cube that floated to the top of the second layer of resin. The reason it still LOOKS like ice is that there wasn't air trapped between the ice cubes and the resin. Usually, if you add ice to high heat, when it melts it almost instantly becomes steam (one of my favorite ways to steam veggies; high heat, layer of ice, garlic, vegetables, cover tightly, and keep the pan in motion), however, the changing stages of the ice was trapped within the viscous resin, not allowing the ice to turn to steam. You notice this the most with the orange ice, because it definitely melted quite a bit and shifted around into an amorphous blob rather than holding shape, as the resin wasn't quite as set that early on.

    That "ice" is water now... no way that it's still ice after being sunk in 90+c resin. You did manage to get a really cool effect though. I think that because you added each piece of Ice individually a layer of resin formed around each piece which kept the colors from mixing together. All in all a very beautiful piece...

    The nearly set resin coated the ice cubes before being locked to all the other ice cubes. Then the resin stuck to the resin to form that big clump. Once the ice melted -and it did melt, ofc- it had no where else to go, and most of the colors stayed within the same form. I think the effect was also helped by using rounded ice cubes. The facets and the spinning light were also a super great idea. Great experiment and project, Nick!

    Is it ice or did the ink make it a liquid? It doesn’t look like a crystal formation at all. Crystals have straight edges. It looks more like pools or puddles of ink. ????????? Whatever it is it’s really COOL!!!!!

    The ice melted... I did a similar project.. But when I attempted to turn it, I got to deep and the water poured out.. I also did one where I made resin cube that looked like ice all in different colors (very transparent) then I, like you put them in clear resin, that was almost ready to set, I got a bunch in there and they didn't try to float, they kinda stayed in place after vacuuming them for about 14 hours, it came out cool, I shaped it like a old time milk bottle, drilled a hole from the bottom and put some color changing LED's in it.. I liked your version making look like a crystal... Loved it Nick.. Keep on the craziness.......

    C'mon Nick, you know the "ice" is completely melted. We all know it. The ice began melting the moment you put in the resin, which was near 90 degress already. The shape of the orbs has clearly changed. What you have is "colored water pockets" in your piece. Which is cool and beautiful, but it is not, definitively not, ice. Don't spread misinformation.

    A stellar nursery in resin. Sweet! - And yes, the ice has melted. There was not enough pressure in your pressure pot to keep it in solid form at that curing temperature. The melting point at the max pressure for your vessel works out to about 39 C.
