Making a Rainbow Plywood Bowl | DIY Skateboard Wood & Epoxy Resin

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I'm making a DIY rainbow skateboard plywood wood & epoxy resin segmented bowl on the lathe. Check out squarespace.com/jonnybuilds to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code JONNYBUILDS.
I used pigmented maple veneers that are used to build skateboards to create this rainbow skateboard plywood and epoxy resin segmented bowl. Skateboard wood is hard to come by, but in this project I'll show you how you can turn a project like this with veneers that can be ordered online. This is my first segmented bowl and second lathe project. I'm sure I made some mistakes along the way, and I'd love to hear your comments.

    I love the little epoxy windows and they let some some light through. This looks like a fun hot air ballon to take on a crazy "adventure"!

    It was a fun "adventure" watching the funky colored patterns emerge. And seeing the light coming through the resin when you were turning the inside of the bowl was very cool. This was a great project!

    Great video! Small tip for turning the outside of the bowl to reduce the catches you said you were getting... always start from the high point and follow towards the low point you are aiming to create. For smooth bowls like you achieved, your motions should almost always start higher and go towards the headstock. Hope this helps! Loved the bowl you finished with!

    If you do any sort of Rainbow project again in future, I would suggest adding a layer of thin black plywood in between each color, this is actually something that happens with rainbows, there is a thin streak of black in between each color

    Love the look dude! Just a thought tho for some of those ring glue ups: if you need epoxy somewhere on a glue up, would it just be easier to do all epoxy instead of some glue/some epoxy? You've gotta wait for the epoxy to dry anyways, might as well make your life a little simpler!

    Your right a press would of been ideal not only for gluing up the plywood but also for gluing all the rings together. And why not use straight epoxy for the glue up instead of alternating back and forth between that and wood glue and possibly running the risk of one or the other not curing correctly. Also if you equally stagger your seams when gluing the rings together it will make for a stronger more visually appealing piece.

  • @st170ish
    @st170ish4 жыл бұрын

    Nice work Jonny, instead of machining which can be dicey and sanding your segmented rings flat use your lathe, just hot glue the ring to a mdf faceplate and lathe it flat heat gun to remove and turn around to do the other side. Oh and dont bother using two glues to join the rings just use epoxy(colour it for more effect), also can use the lathe to clamp them too which will allow you to spin them by hand to see how concentric you have them.

    Now i think, how it may look, if you use the skateboard-stack-planks in the other direction: The lyers horizontal instead of vertical... maybe also a cool design: all the thin colorful lines broken by blue and woden rectangles. Maybe all rings with two blue and two wood segments in the order like some of them actually have and alwaysput skateboard segments on skateboard segments while stacking the rings and alternate blue and wooden segments. And a whoole wooden plate at the bottom and a whoole blue ring on the top. This makes two big areas of alot of thin colorful horizontal stripes separate through two vertical bars of a finish-line-like checkered pattern.
