Making a Rainbow Plywood Bowl | DIY Skateboard Wood & Epoxy Resin
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I'm making a DIY rainbow skateboard plywood wood & epoxy resin segmented bowl on the lathe. Check out squarespace.com/jonnybuilds to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code JONNYBUILDS.
I used pigmented maple veneers that are used to build skateboards to create this rainbow skateboard plywood and epoxy resin segmented bowl. Skateboard wood is hard to come by, but in this project I'll show you how you can turn a project like this with veneers that can be ordered online. This is my first segmented bowl and second lathe project. I'm sure I made some mistakes along the way, and I'd love to hear your comments.

I love the little epoxy windows and they let some some light through. This looks like a fun hot air ballon to take on a crazy "adventure"!
It was a fun "adventure" watching the funky colored patterns emerge. And seeing the light coming through the resin when you were turning the inside of the bowl was very cool. This was a great project!
I love anything with a lot of color. Be kind to each other. Stay safe. Love to all
That was fun to watch.
Great video! Small tip for turning the outside of the bowl to reduce the catches you said you were getting... always start from the high point and follow towards the low point you are aiming to create. For smooth bowls like you achieved, your motions should almost always start higher and go towards the headstock. Hope this helps! Loved the bowl you finished with!
Gave him his 900th like
Make a segmented lampshade using the same method please! Omg so freggin cool!
Its cool how the vaneer patterened out
Great job! Cleaning up all those shavings must have been an "adventure"
wood turning is always a great adventure
LOVE THE BOWL!
What an incredible work of art! Adventure!
WOW!! That is a gorgeous bowl!! 👍👍👍👍👍
What an adventure in turning!
Nicely done sir. I can say, my lathe is probably one of the funnest tools in the shop. I am sure it is in yours as well. Keep up the fun videos. Have a blessed week. Dale
That is just stunning
Adventure in turning turned out great!!
That was a great "Adventure" that came out really well. A very nice job indeed 👏👏👍👍
Wow! Weve been following you for a while and that was so great! Well done. We love working with wood and upcycling stuff (it's all that we can afford rn, lol). Husband brings home tons of scrap wood. So that is what we work with! Cant wait for the next video.
"adventure" Love you channel! I have been wanting to get into woodworking as a hobby. The use of skateboard vaneer is awesome!
Nicely done for first effort .. leads to lots of new ideas. I also love color
Adventure - and the bowl looks great
Love your videos buddy, great to see you're still pushing and trying new things! Looking forward to more!
Your channel is an adventure for sure.
Flipping Excellent work man!!!! Loved that
Woodturning is certainly an adventure sometimes! Love the bowl, it does look like a hot air balloon!
Very cool! Thanks for sharing with us.
Very cool job!!!
Adventure. Very nice segment bowl!!
Now that's what I want to eat cereal out of
Very cool. That was fun! In quilting, that pattern that you created is called a bargello! I didn't even see that until it was all finished.
Wow what a beautiful job you did. Reminds me my Dad use to do all sorts of mix and match epoxy jewelry for us. What a shame he only can see your work from "upstairs". Missed working with him. Love the colors too. Like Mexican motives. I have a 4 sets of drawers with 14 different color drawers. Love colors too. Looking forward to see more of these.👍👌👍
So many steps, but it paid off. Cool looking bowl!
Adventure, great bowl!
If you do any sort of Rainbow project again in future, I would suggest adding a layer of thin black plywood in between each color, this is actually something that happens with rainbows, there is a thin streak of black in between each color
"adventure" Cool Bowl!
A snag is a catch, something you should probably know!!
Pretty FANTASTIC work, Jonny! It really looks amazing! 😃 I guess the fact that the vernier didn't glued straight was for the best! 😃 Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Beautiful bowl, Jonny! Indeed, it looks like a hot air balloon!
Love the look dude! Just a thought tho for some of those ring glue ups: if you need epoxy somewhere on a glue up, would it just be easier to do all epoxy instead of some glue/some epoxy? You've gotta wait for the epoxy to dry anyways, might as well make your life a little simpler!
Great video. Light and airy. : ) Beautiful bowl. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Looks awesome Jonny, great job! 😍👌🏻👍🏻👊🏻.... adventure
Super!
“Adventure” - nice work
Adventure!
Very cool
Nice job sir, look very festive 👍🏼✌🏼🤙🏼
I love "adventures"
Love your videos. Inspired us to upload our own DIY project builds! Keep them coming Jonny :)
so cool
Adventure. You should get a bunch of those cheap wood stirring things you get with a tin of paint at lowes and stain them then use them to make something like in this video.
That's cool
Very interesting and 😎
Awesome!
Your right a press would of been ideal not only for gluing up the plywood but also for gluing all the rings together. And why not use straight epoxy for the glue up instead of alternating back and forth between that and wood glue and possibly running the risk of one or the other not curing correctly. Also if you equally stagger your seams when gluing the rings together it will make for a stronger more visually appealing piece.
Nice work Jonny, instead of machining which can be dicey and sanding your segmented rings flat use your lathe, just hot glue the ring to a mdf faceplate and lathe it flat heat gun to remove and turn around to do the other side. Oh and dont bother using two glues to join the rings just use epoxy(colour it for more effect), also can use the lathe to clamp them too which will allow you to spin them by hand to see how concentric you have them.
adventure!
Make a dope lampshade
A safe skateboarding adventure
Now i think, how it may look, if you use the skateboard-stack-planks in the other direction: The lyers horizontal instead of vertical... maybe also a cool design: all the thin colorful lines broken by blue and woden rectangles. Maybe all rings with two blue and two wood segments in the order like some of them actually have and alwaysput skateboard segments on skateboard segments while stacking the rings and alternate blue and wooden segments. And a whoole wooden plate at the bottom and a whoole blue ring on the top. This makes two big areas of alot of thin colorful horizontal stripes separate through two vertical bars of a finish-line-like checkered pattern.
You are a super creative guy! The bowl looks amazing and getting to watch the transformation from start to finish It's very relaxing. This is the first time I've been on your channel, but I love watching creativity expressed through physical objects and their creations. Consider me your newest subscriber!

I want the money Jonny has spent on clamps haha🤯
I love your videos. I wish you just uploaded more frequently but things take time to happen.
Adventure! Do you ever sell any of your work? I love this bowl!!!!
Nice bowl I like the colors, why isn't the top layer lined up with the other layers though?
Great job. Very well done, and you've got extremely good taste. Where can I buy your pieces of art?
Love the tunes in this one....but actually, it's not skateboard wood 😜 kidding aside, I'm stoked to try your "skateboard" plywood technique in one of my projects... Thanks for the inspo!
adventure... boom
Total boat had showed using their epoxy to glue the segments together that way you wouldn’t have to use glue on some areas and Epoxy on the others the one I saw was somebody in San Francisco gluing up skateboards together and when he use the Epoxy resin it took care of the voids
Have you considered getting a digital scale to weigh out your epoxy? It takes out all the guess work and inconsistencies of using a measuring cup.
Awesome job ! Where did you get the colored skateboard veneer ?
Could've just put a thick board on top and bottom when clamping. Would've distributed the pressing force more evenly. Possibly use less clamps.
Hi how did you dye the plywood in the 1st place
Adventure
Came out so nice Jonny! I gotta try my hand at turning at some point...looks super rewarding!
How do you paint these trees with which paint? How does the paint get into the wood? How is the paint made among the commenters? Does anyone knows? The color should remain the same after 1 mm of coating is cut or sanded.
Do you do commissions? I have been looking for someone to build a desk.
Try to make a billiard table out of epoxy
Onde compro esse gabarito preto cheio de furo
Playing with a volume of epoxy, I keep seeing a lampshade or something else with the light being diffused through it.

I can't find the seg bowl angle calc... help
Какой это материал из разных цветов ?. Спасибо
Bravo JB! Adventure 🌈
Quite the.... adventure you could say lol. I did something similar on my turning channel a few weeks ago
#moreclamps
Halfway thru the video I realized we're making a bowl from skateboard wood, not a skateboard😂
You look like James Bond.
Craftsman!!
Love your work but to much music
Pfftt. Someone once told me a monkey can operate a lathe....

Hahaha! Thanks 4 kick Mick!
why is it a “skateboard” bowl? also why so expensive?
@TrueDeko
4 жыл бұрын
Skateboard bowl because it's made out of skateboard maple, expensive because of the time and materials, as well as the uniqueness of the work (also the only one in existence)
to dye wood using WHAT
This is the most WTF thing i ever saw. You can call it whatever, but WTF is it for? As a decoration, its an eyesore.
