Nice horn! The ones I have seen have a plug in the base of the horn with threads to screw out to fill the horn.

Nice video, and like mentioned good editing to keep it to the point with little or no dead time. The horn looks great, I just looked up powder horn builds since I just picked one up a couple weeks ago at the Lewisburg Artisan Show. The guy i night the horn from mentioned heating hog lard to 340 degrees to soften the horn to fit a round plug. I thought that seemed more complicated than necessary and you proved that by just boiling in water. I will build one for the smoothbore i just finished. Thanks

Hi brian! Thank you! I don't think he's wrong either. I've read that in order to break the memory of the horn you have to get it hotter. They say it will try to cool down to it's original shape and crack. But in this case and others that aren't too oval, water is enough. It's been half a year now and it has no problems.

Also i tried heating one in cooking oil but just burned amd ruined the end. An idea i thought of for a good fit on your plug is to have a tapered cone to enter after boiling. Put it in when flexible and measure with calipers. Then make your plug that size. Would probably be more precise fit

Ok yes I have 2 3/8" at the wide part and 2" at the narrow part was going to turn a plug to 2 3/16" to split the difference. The cone idea is a good one then it will work for multiple horns near the same size. So if i stick a cone in there and let horn cool after boiling to flexible, it will stay?

@@bkauffman0390 No it will probably go back to its original shape. I just thought you could boil then put in the measuring cone. Then take out the measuring cone and let it cool. Then turn a plug and re-boil to fit the plug. An extra step but i think it'll make a good fit. Just an idea. I know on those flat horns water doesn't work. They have to get hotter than boiling water. They will try to return to shape and crack

One other lil trick, since you do have a lathe? Hollow out the base plug as much as possible? It will increase powder capacity.

Dixie Gun Works will sell you horns, completed or raw, or as kits. Or most anything you might need to be pre-2023.

Thank you! I just picked up a couple from a flea market that were mounted for$20. Just the right size for a couple horns. Dixon's muzzleloader shop in Kempton,PA had a nice selection but not sure if they ship . Track of the wolf might have some. And sometimes Tandy leather has horns

I love the way that this turned out and I am wondering if you had to seal the horn to make it water proof and so what did you use?

Thank you. I did not seal it with anything and have not had a problem. I am also not out in rain very much. I have heard of people using beeswax before

How long do you boil the horn until it gets flexible?

I kept testing it but I think 15 minutes was plenty long. This horn wasn't super thick so if you have a thicker one you might have to check it

In the small end with a little funnel. Not as hard as most people think. If you look at most originals the big end was tacked down. I've even just cupped my hand around it and poured into it without making much mess.

Aren't you supposed to be able to fill it from the big end?

No not really. Look at most originals and they were almost all tacked closed. It is very simple to fill from the small end. I just use my hand as a funnel and only spill maybe a primes worth. You can also use a small funnel too or just roll paper into a funnel. I’ve done that too

But you can use whatever you want I just like a smaller hole. It's a little easier to control powder flow

No tacks. ....pre-drill small holes and tap in tooth picks and file flush...tacks will not move with the material...not very authentic for 18th C
