    This is a fantastic video! I know it's older, but you did a fantastic job! I applaud you for defending your work. Shooting a muzzle loader is like driving a classic car. It's inherently quite dangerous, and yet safety-mongrels seem to get caught up with minor details. You made a beautiful and very functional powder horn, and I'm positive your brother was very proud to receive it. I hope it sees use!

    John, I made my first powder horn out of a Scottish Highlander horn from my in-laws farm. I never thought of making a priming horn out of one. Maybe I'll do that with the other horn since I had two from the bull. I also made a possibles bag and used the very tip of the horn to make the button closure for it. It looks really nice and works great. Keep the videos coming.

    John Very nice job buddy.I started making powder horns back in the early 70's. While I don't use glue on the base plug... I see nothing wrong with using whatever materials are available to accomplish the task at hand, unless you need to stay period correct? One thing I do is, I drill and tap an. appropriate sized hole in the base plug before I tack it in? Usually a 3/8"-16NC ( .375") threaded hole then I use a piece of brass All Thread and a brass Finial from the hardware store to make a removable plug for easier filling. I have made wooden threaded plugs ( just to keep the horn Period authentic ) with Maple dowel rod and a "Little Giant" die stock assembly. Drilling the base cap before inserting it keeps the saw dust out of the horn, thereby lowering the risk of plugging the pour spout. I have done it in reverse order ( by mistake ) and was able to remove the saw dust by shaking the horn over my shop garbage barrel, but it's much easier if you just DON'T do it in the first place :~)))) As for my thoughts ( if they're worth anything to you ) on the subject of making a Bomb by gluing in the base cap? In my 50 years of experience with Black Powder. I have found that Black Powder TRULY IS Explosive, In light of that, it really doesn't matter whether the base cap is glued in or not. In a confined space as small as a Powder Horn, should the powder ignite, it will explode long before that base cap would ever dislodge itself safely enough to avoid a devastating catastrophe ? Again... just my opinion? I'm sure there are " Experts" out they in KZread land who would disagree with that? John, just keep making those fine looking powder horns,, and let public opinion go take a hike. From what I'm seeing, most everyone loves your work? That should be a good indicator of how people view your contribution to the craft? Dave Pappy Dave's Knives

    Very good video. I'm glad you enjoyed your foray into the hornworking world, and I hope you continue it! If you'll allow, I would like to warn you about getting the horn too hot, as the scorching can cause the horn to get brittle and more prone to cracking (that particular horn looked to be plenty thick so there shouldn't be a problem there) the other thing to consider is that the spout plug is generally made of wood, because of the expansion factor, it helps stop any moisture by way of expansion, and it is softer than the horn. Antler on the other hand does neither, so you run the risk of cracking the horn (again) should you get a little "overzealous" seating the plug, and if not sealed properly it will allow moisture in anyway. That aside! Good work! I'm glad you shared your experience and hope you'll continue!

    Wicked cool man thanks for the video...... I especially like the idea of using antler for a stopper - I am considering doing the same but want to ask just to be sure as to the sealing nature/capacity of horn on horn? I'm sure you're not the type to risk getting your powder wet ha but bc you're using it for a priming horn i wasn't sure if maybe you'd be keeping it in your possibles bag or better concealed than your regular horn. Whatever the answer is there any tips/ideas you have as to what I could do to the deer antler to insure it will be watertight?

    My grandfather used to build muzzleloaders and all the accessories. The end cap was not glued so that he could unscrew the cap and refill the powderhorn quickly. If it were possible for black powder to spontaneously combust then you would have a small curved missile and not a "bomb". The most important part was to keep the powder dry.

    not for looks. If it were looks I would have taken more time on it. It would take a very small funnel to fill. With the amount of flash powder it holds it should last someone like me who hunts alot with black powder up to 10 years before refilling.

  • @craigminor3665

    I agree with the previous post you shouldn't glue the end cap in , I have been shooting black powder since I was about 12 years old and have never seen a end cap glued into a horn ( because if it does ignite its not a bomb ) if you glued it you didn't need the tacks, all caps on horns are either press fit or brass tacked in place with very small tacks so it can blow out the back . you have to remember black powder isn't like smokeless powder where smokelss powder just expands black powder explodes .

    I know you're going for authentic, but putting a screw in plug in the base for a larger filling hole would be more practical. I know...epoxy a female threaded piece of tubing in the wood end, that you could screw in a flush plug that wouldn't show much and give you a faster fill. You did such a great job on it, but slow filling would be a pain after a while. I like watching you guys and have been subscribed a few years. From bow hunting frogs to grabbing rattlesnakes by the tail, and now trapping furs, you guys are great. Keep up the good work.

    @@parrotbill Hi. I just drill and tap a 3/8"-16 hole in my plugs, and coat the threads with super glue to harden them. Then I take a 3/4" long piece of 3/8"-16 Brass allthread, and pin that into an Acorn finial. This makes filling the horn a breeze. I know it's NOT PC, but I've been doing it that way since 1976. What's the difference between a priming horn and a powder horn?

  • @ronschramm9163

    @ronschramm9163

    7 жыл бұрын

    Shane Kuhn...a priming horn is generally smaller and is used to carry finer grain powder for priming the flash pan on your flintlock...it can be smaller as the amount of priming powder you use is way less versus the powder you load your flintlock with. For example, I have fffg in my powder horn and ffffg in my priming horn. Some shooters just use fffg for both but personally I have found the finer grain works the best to prime my flintlocks with.

    How on earth do you fill the horn? doesnt the larger end cap come off to do that? Also lets say you want to really use this for your black poweder gun. I have always thought they were supposed to be completely waterproof. I have heard tell that when black rifle competions are initiated they sometimes make the men dunk thier horns into a barrel of water to see who is and isnt really prepared. That said do you use wax as a waterproof gap fill with the plug like beeswax? Seriously, how do you fill the horn?

    +clockguy2 I know, but he is trying to be more historical than practical. because the other way around doesnt make sense. A brass powder flask that many use today would be 1000 times more dangerous but no body says anything about that. Probably because its more modern than historical??. It really boils down to safety on the part of the user not how safe the equipment is. A logical conclusion would result in not even using the gun or powder horn or flask at all based on safety measures. How safe is safe? Its in the users hands and mind not the equipment. Its no different than buying a mass manufactured horn sold in stores.

    The subject of gluing or not gluing the end cap on a powder horn is irrelevant. A person should be more concerned with how to safely handle that powder in the first place. If the explosion is prevented from happening then the vessel the powder is carried in becomes a non issue.

    Mmmmm how to make a BOM not how to make a powder horn ... .little wooden pins to serve as weak points at the wide end of the powder horn to pin the cap to the end of the horn. not epoxy. or you May blow a rather large hole in the side of your chest. ...Never use anything that is conductive of static electricity or your powder May ignite resulting in big bang that you are not aware of . And may injure . definitely will give you and anyone standing within a 50 ft radius of you a rather really really.... Really large freight . Other than those two not so minor points absolutely awesome tutorial

    Dude, you never glue in a base plug! If you get a spark in the horn, it will go off like a hand grenade. You only use bee's wax to seal the base plug to the horn. If you get a spark in the horn, it will blow out the base plug and tacks and maybe the stopper if it was put into the horn. NEVER GLUE IN A BASE PLUG!!! It's simply not safe. Please use bee's wax to seal the base plug. I've been muzzle loading for over 30 years and I know about powder horns. I use two of them daily. One is for the main charge (a big horn that holds about 1 lb. of 2Fg black powder) and a smaller one that holds about a lb. of 4Fg to prime the pan of my flintlock. Otherwise you've made a nice horn. The use of tacks or small nails are what secures the base plug to the horn. The bee's wax waterproofs the horn.

  • @mikegrossberg8624

    @mikegrossberg8624

    5 жыл бұрын

    IMHO, about the ONLY way you are going to get a spark near a priming horn is if you have the lock at full cock and pull the trigger while you're priming the piece. Which, come to think of it, wouldn't be possible, since the frizzen would have to be up and out of the way in order to prime the pan in the first place! The ONLY thing the flint could hit would be the horn, which will NOT produce a spark! While your objection MIGHT be relevant in the case of a regular powder horn, the fact that we are told, over and over, NEVER to load the weapon directly from the horn, but ALWAYS use a measure, would tend to negate your perceived problem. Unless, that is, if the person doing the loading is guilty of extreme carelessness and stupidity
