    Sometimes, before the advent of 3D printing of prototypes, we as prototype makers would have to make the items out of solid plastic blocks. We'd, well I'd Make items out of MDF, Acrylic and resins to create a push button home Pr office phone with a cassette answer machine built into the futuristic housing. It looked perfect...buttons were cast, expansion foam below to give the perfect button press fe. Many cutters made on the lathe out of Silver Steel, harden & temper. Yeah..anther skill lost to 3D printing. Onya for saying what you did. Mike

I have a few of these too. same story as you but then i found i enjoyed making them a little more than i liked using them haha. one area i tried a little different was tapering the area behind the quick insert so the transition didnt feel as abrupt in the finger gripping area. But mind the tab. Try it out on one and keep up the amazing craftsmanship!

    Mate, that was an incredibly simple explanation of building your own engraving handpiece. Your machining expertise and simple communication skills are par excellence..ask someone who speaks French to say those 2 words. I, too, have similar skills as a Toolmaker. Next project may I suggest a flat rotation table that runs over Torlon or plastic balls. I made one with ¼" tapped holes so that I could mount fixed objects that needed welding. My aim was to do engraving. I have in this period of 11 years developed a tremor in my left non dominant hand. Yeah, it's what you think it is. So, seeing your build gives me hope. I wish you well, Brother, in another country all my best. Let's see some scroll work...look up Sam Alfano. He like you are Masters of their craft. Mike from Down Under. I echo the sentiments of using a router bit to make that Radius. I've spent hours making a HSS one for a project....DOH!

    If you can write your name then you can engrave. All you need to do is master holding the high-speed burr. Where ever the burr touches is almost the same as touching the same spot with a pencil lead, pen or a manual push engraver. He all about practice and visualising the end result desired . I engrave wood and Stone. Stone is thrilling when you incorporate Serifs...ya gotta look that up...hard to explain. Do it...experience it...remember they all must come back to the heart.

  • @bustergonad3975

    @bustergonad3975

    Wow...A ❤..no better praise than that. A Serif I the end part of a letter font. If you imagine the R ..the very end of the R that stops at the bottom of th R rrrrR next to say a full stop. If you continued that line as is you wanted to return in a sweeping arc towards the centre(Heart) of the letter. These sweeps if done in stone give the letter art Finesse..much like your logo of around the circled H. You know what I mean. When done in stone...once it's Guilded in Gold..a Gravestone inscription is other worldly. Thanks for my Red Heart

    As a PSA from a professional engraver, I’ll offer some observations. All of these pneumatic engraver videos focus on the handpiece and get the foot pedal or air source completely wrong. Imagine someone teaches you to build a car on KZread and the last thing they do is tell you to install an “on/off” switch in place of the gas pedal/throttle. You will have a car, but you can only run it at max RPM or not at all. A pneumatic engraving system is the same. It relies on a very precise throttle control to control air flow and thus speed of the tool. Without this control you’ll have what might be a very nice hand piece that is incapable of making the precision cuts required in hand engraving. This may be a case of the blind leading the blind. People seam to be following the example of a few a few KZread videos produced years ago by some folks who were not engravers and therefore didn’t understand how these tools work. This video is a case in which the maker builds a nicely made tool yet doesn’t have the system in place to make it function as it should. And for those wondering why professional tools cost so much, this is why. This build demonstrates the precise machining it takes to produce a quality tool. And the real professional tools are built to a much higher standard than even this. I love shop made tools. But as an engraving instructor who sees around 60 students per year, I witness firsthand what happens when beginners think they can learn engraving from KZread. I end up correcting major problems with fundamentals that were never learned in 99% of students who are self taught or learned from videos. Engraving is hard enough. Add in tools that don’t function as they should and the problem is compounded. And the beginner is left believing the problem lies with them rather than the technique or tools.
