Making a New Handle for a Vintage Spatula - Easy DIY Project!

Фильм және анимация

Old tools and kitchen gadgets lose their handles. But that doesn't mean you have to dump them. In this video knife maker Walter Sorrells makes a new handle for an old family kitchen heirloom -- a spatula.

    "Bro?" No sir! 😉 Thank you for this video Walter! I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who is sentimental about kitchen utensils! Last April I was house/cat sitting for my step brother, they have a gas stove and I melted, partially, 😢 the handle of their fish spatula, so I bought them a new fish spatula and I have the one I melted and I got to figure out how to put a new handle on it so thank you for this video it was extremely helpful and I'm excited to get it done, and hopefully I can find some gorgeous wood like what you worked with! Cheers, from Oregon!

    in the process of making my first knife. been a lot of fun. failed trying to make a giant Bowie first time around and a karambit so opted with something a much more simple. blade is about 4 inches long. managed to put a nice full flat grind on it too. trying to sand out the grind lines now. something therapeutic about knife making. used 01 steel as im only a beginner. will be making more if this 1 turns out like i hope.

    This is actually a really great tutorial on how make and attach knife handles. You cover all the things you don't think about until your knee deep in unaligned holes. Order of operation is key. Nicely done sir

    Greetings from Ireland. You can salvage the finest of timber from junk antique furniture, an old mahogany table for instance would give many years worth of handles, piano's are great also, the old ones may even have real ivory & ebony.

    Mr.Sorrells I have a question that is unrelated to this video but I made a fighting style chopper from a big really thick metal file and I'm having a lot of trouble drilling the pin holes. The file is extremely thick and high carbon which is perfect for a knife like that but is impossible to drill with a hand drill (only drill I have) and I annealed the file several times bringing it to critical temperature and leaving it to slowly cool in wood ash. And it's still impossible to drill I destroyed about 5 drill bits which left me think could it be air hardening steel? But the file is like 50 years old and I quenched the blade in water and it hardened skated a file after that while the handle didnt. So can you give me any advice how I can drill the pin holes? Also I'm a huge fan of your work you're one of my inspirations to start knifemaking!

    Do you ever use horn for handles? If so, how do you compare it to wood; I mean is it harder to work with, can it be worked with simple hand tools etc.

  • @WalterSorrellsBlades

    @WalterSorrellsBlades

    8 жыл бұрын

    I've used buffalo horn but not, say, ram horn. Horn is pretty easy to work, softer than most woods. The downside of horn is that it's basically the same material as fingernails, so it stinks like crazy when you grind it!
