Making a Marimba

My Premier Project Plans: paskmakes.com/premier-project...
My Free Plans: paskmakes.com/free-plans/
This is the third Marimba I have built, all with plans from the book 'Make your own Marimbas' by Jon Madin. This build was for a customer and they requested a smaller sized box resonated Marimba (2 octave) the plans in the book are for a 3 1/2 octave. I had to modify the plans to suit. The local school where my Daughter attends and plays in the Marimba band, have Marimbas this size built by the music teacher - they sound amazing, so there is no problem with the modifications. The frame and legs could be made out of any wood but I have built all mine with plywood as I like the look. The box has to be made with a specific thickness plywood but you will need to get the book for more details.
Tuning the bars is the most time consuming part of the project. I’ve tried different approaches of removing the wood - I’ve used the bandsaw but that is too easy to take too much off and ruin the bar so I think the best approach is with a chisel. I used my iPhone with a tuning app which I’ve tested next to a tuner on my first Marimba and there was no difference.
The sound in the video does not do the Marimba any justice as I’m recording with the camera’s built in mic and that is very poor indeed.
It’s a fun project and the kids love to play the Marimba (we have a lot of kids visit our home and they all ask to play it) so I highly recommend building one.

I haven't fully red this book kzread.infoUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO yet but it is a good basic understanding of the different woods that all woodworkers should know.
I was already impressed with build. But now even more impressed when I saw you built it to play with your daughter.

Love seeing parents build for their kids. I did it for my sons and they still remember most of the projects.
That's crazy you built one in only ten minutes!!

You think that's amazing? I saw some guy on KZread build a cabin in the woods in less than 8 minutes. Geez, kids these days! Am I right?!?
I love how you can hear the lower during the tuning, each time you remove wood :D
at 8:30 I read "Tuning oil" :)))

What happened to your daughter?
Man, this is so great! As a musician and a father, watching you make this instrument and play it with your daughter at the end, was very moving. Love your channel, congrats!!!
Something to note for people doing this at home: do the letter carving and sanding *before* you tune it. It's not much, but it does change the mass of the blocks which with throw it out of tune.
@PaskMakes

I've made a lot of these and it doesn't throw it out of tune. If it does it doesn't show on the tuner so would be minuscule! :)

@@PaskMakes I loved watching this, but I think there are definitely some issues with the timbre. The A, G, F and E your daughter plays at 9:29, for instance, have very strong and discordant overtones. In particular the E has an overtone of a higher C strong enough that my ears fixate on that rather than the low E intended! Not sure how you go about adjusting this, but I guess it's partly to do with the bars, partly the resonating box?

@@nathan87 "Discordant overtones" An overtone is an overtone. Yet, in terms of acustics, perfect tuning is just imposible, its all relative ratios, relatively both artistically and fisically.
@nathan87

@@cactusowo1835 not really. It's perfectly possible for overtones to be discordant, although I believe I used it here more in the loose sense of "unwanted" more than anything else. Perhaps you are imagining that all spectra are harmonic, which is decidedly not the case, particularly for oddly-shaped solid bodies.

As a father, I'm certain that you're PERFECTLY okay with reading your daughter is the star of this video. Good job on the marimba, great job on the child. She's truly adorable. Congratulations!
I love that you built this for your daughter. Clearly, there is much love at your home. I watched this with my 2 year old daughter.
Now the next step is adding sharps and flats.

Priceless. What a great Dad you are!
Love this, so meticulous and precise! Definitely worth the effort to see your daughter play it!
I love this build, especially as it’s something you can share with your daughter.
Great dad, Great father and daughter project. God bless
Just watched this. Love it, especially your daughter rocking out on a solo. Awesome!!
I’m amazed at how much your daughter learned in just a year. I’ve been a percussionist for almost 7 years, and it’s just so beautiful seeing new percussionists.

That was beautiful! I've been playing percussion for 20 years, but have never seen someone make a marimba at home.. incredible! You are a talented woodworker and a loving father. Your daughter is talented, the band director is gonna snatch her into the percussion section as soon as she's old enough!
Seeing the enjoyment your daughter had playing with you, makes it all worthwhile. Perhaps you should ask her to make a tambourine with you and then you can play both instruments together.
You are one of my favorite builders!
What a brilliant production, very instructive
Such an awesome builder and a great dad!
Beautifully done and made
Just love this channel keep being surprised at what gets produced in that workshop!
Thats sweet. What a great family moment.

Wow! Most impressive.
That is so special. Your daughter is lucky to have a dad like you. She is super talented. I hope she keeps it up. Also, I suggest she play your intro and outro music.
Holy moly, nice work!

Awesome project! Kudos for the take on playing the marimba. That was cool! 9:50 those chords remind me of that jingle from the late 1980's campaign for the "Spirit of Massachusetts." Catchy!
That was great, especially when your daughter added to the fun.
Nice mate! Thats a lovely project and I loved the little recital with your daughter at the end! I think we need a Marimba at my gaff.....
Awesome job buddy. The more I see of you the more I think how awesome of a guy you are.
