Making a Maple Bowl with Maple and Walnut Inserts
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I really like the idea of taking a damaged wood turned bowl rough and fixing it with wood inserts. In this project, I made segmented round inserts from maple and walnut wood. I cut out the knots from a monolithic maple wood turned bowl blank and replaced them with the round segmented pieces. In both the insert and the cut out in the bowl, I made a 3゚ taper on the contacting surface of each. I cut this taper with a 3゚ tapered bit on the CNC machine. This taper allowed the insert to be pressed into the bowl to get a very tight fit.
What I really like about the way this project turned out is that the wood grain of the bowl and the geometric inserted pieces talk to each other. The inserted pieces aren’t just in a random place. They are where the knots were so the form of the grain and the form of the segments have a relationship. I think this is what makes this art as it goes beyond random adjacencies.

Your Woodworking skills are top notch, but you always amaze me with your video skills. I have to say the whole black and white/with just one object painted in rich colors is blowing my mind. 🤯

One of those films that’s hard to watch, but should be seen, IMHO. Anyway, the woodworking is exceptional!
Woodturning videos are not usually my favorite videos put out by woodworkers but you sir are a completely different animal! Your woodturning videos are riviting. I love the combination of problem solving, CNC, wood harvesting story and narration. It's always a pleasure to see a new Howarth video pop up in my feed!
Nobody is really talking about your level of taste! .... I see so many woodworking videos where the skills are top notch, and then end product is kind of a loud garish piece. This is so beautiful. Wish it were mine.
With all the design skills, woodworking prowess and video wizardry aside, you're plain and simple one of the best story tellers out there. A true inspiration to anyone who went into the shop and set out to create something. The only thing I'm missing is the sound of that cello. I hope it features again in one of your videos soon.
Getting old when new videos you watch feature wood from videos three years ago you watched and said to yourself "Man it'll be forever until I see Frank make something from that"!!

It is always a good day the Frank uploads another project video! Thanks for the inspiration and it is beautiful!
Wow, the play between the natural patterns and the inserts is surreal!
I have never seen any bowl as beautiful as this bowl.
Frank, I think that the workings of your mind is not of this Earth. That you are an artist of very high degree is a given. Your excellent technical skills are perfectly melded to the alien and artistic parts of your being. This is why I love all aspects of your work, most especially your documentation, which allows me to see the progression of your various projects. :-) Thank you for sharing.
Wow. This one took me by surprise by how much you grab my attention, that 30 minutes flys by!
I don't know what magic it is you have but I always find myself mesmerised by your videos. Your editing, woodworking and storyboarding skills as well as your calm, funny, amiable vocal delivery are all just perfect. Thank you for making the world a happier, sawdusty-smelling, place :)
This is the first bowl that has really struck me. Very beautiful. Make more knotty bowls with plugs!
What a beautiful result!
Frank- One of my favorite things about woodworking is reusing pieces and recalling the memories from previous projects and harvesting the wood. Thanks for including this and your family in your videos!
The only problem I ever have with your videos is that your voice is so relaxing and I keep falling asleep 😂 I've watched each of them several times just to see all of it.
Absolutely gorgeous!!
Love this piece. Its shows your understanding of the turning process and creation of new design parameters and meeting those challenges. Kudos, Frank.
I am really amazed. I have no suitable word to appreciate your creativity.
Stunning! Top notch craftsmanship!
Thank you, Frank! Beautiful work.
Simply amazing. Those colors..
Marvelous……….I love when someone knows how to combine brain, materials and tools......Frank, you are an inspiration. Love every minute of your presentations.....Keep on doing a good work.
Absolutely beautiful! !
I like how the woodworking adds to your visual art.
I just want to say Thank you for everything you have thought me. I greatly appreciate all of the work you do. I am a machinist by trade, and it is wonderful watching you do your lathe work. Thank you again.
I love how much thought is put into your projects! 👊🏻
You. Are. The. Master. I'm obsessed with this piece. Love your work, sir.
This bowl is just a delight for the eye. Thanks for making it!
I absolutely love watching you work. Nobody is better

Some of your best shots ever in this one!!
Great work, Frank! Thanks.
Another beautiful work.
Extraordinary woodworking skills , the best production and narration yet
I’ve watched nearly all of your videos, and this is one of my favorites.
1. I am so glad I found this channel. Amazing and focused work~ 2. What a treasure trove of tools! 3. Have you ever pulled an overnighter? 4. Who does the laundry and how many washing machines and dryers have you gone through? Thanks for the voice over sound bites, it makes the video so much more interesting. And yes, my mind screamed when the branch was destroyed and in all honesty, I love the cracks and what we see as imperfections but Mother Nature knows best...most of the time.
Absolutely beautiful
Usually I don't like videos longer than 10 minutes, but with your editing skills, your relaxing narration, and the incredibile objects that you make...25 minutes are really enjoyable!
Another beauty, Frank! Thanks for sharing!
You do amazing work Frank. Beautiful!
Oh man! What a wonderful job, aged three years, is like the movies that take so long to be available. Wonderful love for wood you show in every detail. I loved. Thanks for sharing

I really love watching your videos.. I learn something each time and the best part is that I feel so relaxed after.. thanks for sharing Frank. 😀
Absolutely amazing!
Outstanding, so beautiful
Well thought out. Great finished product.
wonderful - an artist at work
The last two minutes where you talk about the grain and the geometry are the best.
Another work of art
Man that’s epic! You should defo make more like that. I feel like the style is unique enough it could definitely be attributed to you, but it’s not so crazy out there that people wouldn’t want it. Imagine years from now, collectors could be like ‘yeah that’s a genuine Frank Howarth’
Every week I look forward to seeing what creations you're going to dream up and I'm never disappointed! Great looking bowl Frank! - Ed
Dude, watching your channel almost feels like I am in a time warp. I’ve been watching since 2014 and it always amazes me when you bring up old projects how long ago they actually were because it feels like it was just yesterday or last month
Gorgeous!!
Once again , Blown away by your video and woodworking skills!! You are amazing.
That was a really cool way to cover the three year journey from log to bowl! Cheers Frank!
Masterwork... Thanks for sharing.
No other channel that I follow do I look forward to as much as your videos, Frank. This might be my favorite one of your bowls yet.
You Frank, are Amazing!! Thank you so much to share your skills, really good job👍👍👍
The end product is beautiful. I like the way you explained your process.
Lovely work.
The juxtaposition of organic and geometric shapes are very nice. Well done.
Simply amazing as usual.
Such an unexpected use for a CNC, and a great end result! Thanks for sharing this!
Frank wow it is a fantastic and stunning bowl the way you do things and telling what and why you do things is amazing. Thank you.
Thanks for the new video! I enjoy your work!
Looks awesome!!
You are truly a master at design and wood turning. Great job. Thanks for sharing.
Love this. Beautiful job
Beautiful!
Your tracking / mocha skills and selective desaturation are magnificent. You provide a good example of the adage, "problems are opportunities" and as always your solution and the final bowl are wonderful. Thanks for sharing.
This is just beautiful!
That is really beautiful, Frank.
absolutely beautiful work !!!
Really amazing!
Now THAT'S a dream workshop!
Amazing production of this video
I didn't think I was going to be a big fan of this build, but you delighted again. Amazing build Frank!
The geometry of the inserts with the organic flow of the grain kinda looks like suns in clouds to me, it's really nice to look at
Beautiful barn you have.
Wow, this bowl looks awesome. What a wonderful and beautiful piece.
You never disappoint!
